View Full Version : Better late than never: ArmA Gold

I finally got a cheap copy of Armed Assault Gold, which includes the 1.08 patch and the addon. Usually the price for a new copy is 20 euros (fair for what you get, more than fair), but I got it even for the half. It installs all in just one rush, from one DVD. No patching, no separate addon-installation.

The later patches 1.14 are said in the forums to be adding new problems, and not being really convincing. Any pro or con for using 1.14? I currently stay with 1.08.

I use a sound mod named BPA 1.4. Are there any better, more recommendable? I saw the video by Chammy, which looks nice, and also sounds nice. I tried the Hifi FX mod, but the download seems to be corrupted every time.

Any other must-have mods? I mean really basic stuff one would hate to miss, which really makes a difference for the better, not some minor things that are interesting only for people who love just that little tiny detail.

Does anyone know status of the extensive Bundeswehr-mod?

Played Flashpoint a lot, love ArmA already, now that the starting problems reported two years back are gone and performance is fine. Being able to use TrackIR really makes a difference. Just that contrast of bright and black, when you are supposed to be blinded by the sun, is a little too hefty, for my taste, even the NVG suffer from this occasionally. However, a great package for low money - smile-grin-laughter! just the behavior of tanks again sends tears of laughter into my eyes. After all ArmA still is an infantry simulator, the way armoured vehicle behave, is a joke. If I want some tanking, I choose you know what.

Don't know of any mods but to really make this game shine you should get online for some co-op. I play all the time on SimHQ; they swear to realism, make extensive use of the planning facilities, and have a huge vault of custom-made missions. There should be some games running tonight if you are interested. Here's the sticky on their forums: http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2498856#Post2498856

Agreed! The Coops are what makes the game shine. Mature players most of the time and good coordination. :yep:

Yeah, coop is great fun. We once had a very lengthy heli insertion, and everybody was craking jokes on the chat and telling about themselves. Then you land and people start getting shot.:rotfl:

Personaly I didnt have any major issues with the 1.14 patch and thats what I run, that and for warfare mode (which can also be played solo, or coop too).

COOP is fun too though I've never played with any of you all (or SimHQ)

Does anyone know status of the extensive Bundeswehr-mod? I haven't read anything about it on the major news sites lately but maybe there is some progress info in the BW-mod's forums which hasn't made the way to the news sites yet...
BW-mod site (http://ofp.gamepark.cz/_hosted/bwmod/) (the last news item on their page is actually almost a year old as you can see...).
Edit: I've just browsed through their forum and it seems they have a serious lack of personel. To be honest I doubt that the BW mod will ever release anything more than a "as is" release of their work done so far, or one or the other finished single addon maybe.

ACE mod (Advanced Combat Environment; sequel to the WGL mod in Ofp so to speak) and FDF mod (Finnish Defence Forces) are the mods which are worth looking forward to the most in my opinion (in terms of adding new features to the game). But there are no (major) releases of both yet I believe.

So for the status of the BW mod: they finally released the Leopard (in beta version):

Edit: furthermore the BW mod released the cute Wiesel 2 Ozelot:

Leopards? I run them exclusively in Steel Beasts Pro. Tanks and aeroplanes I do not touch in Flashpoint or ArmA. It makes me laugh until I have tears in my eyes, and then I am blind and can't aim at anything anymore - and how should I shoot at something that way?

I mean ArmAit is as much an infantry simulator as SBP is a tanks simulator. The infantry in SBP is far from convincing. So are tanks in ArmA.

Think they are made of rubber! :D

You could say that about the aircraft too, pretty much all the vehicles in ArmA are just a step above those in Battlefield X (42, V, 2, etc).

Now as for it being an infantry simulator, I could easily point out a huge stack of faults on the infantry side. Things that are completely backwards/silly, and things your soldier does that no real life soldier would ever ever do in the middle of a fire fight unless they had a death wish.

All the same it is a half decent infantry simulator and a semi decent vehicle simulator (if you like lite sims). Where ArmA shines is bringing it all together in one environment.

Sounds fine to me NeonSamurai, but amidst all the nitpicking we should never forget that there is no other game that surpasses ArmA.

Personally I could do entirely without the the flying parts, I usually skip them. Driving vehicles is good, but where the game really shines is the infantry part, though I agree it is not 100% realistic.

Think you are right there. when I said "infantry simulator", I was thinking of that in direct comparison to the other available 3rd-person-shooters there are. It may not be the perfect simulation, but surely it is the most realistic simulation of infantry in the genre.

When needing to chose, I would prefer SBP every time, though. Here you have a simulation without doubt.
