The Subsim Radio Room forums began in ~1998-99, with a Matt's CGI script forum. Unfortunately, all those threads are gone. :dead:

Then we switched to a hosted forum, EZBoard. Sniff, them's all gone, too. Edit: the posts are gone but the Wayback Machine still lists the threads and forums here. (http://web.archive.org/web/20000831032039/www.subsim.com/ssr/)

And around 2002 I got bold and setup a phpBB 1.4.4 forum (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB_2002/), and we have most of the threads and discussions from then until now, progressing through phpBB 2.19 (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB_archive1/) and the current vBulletin premier software.

Members come and go, but there are some who still post regularly here. Bill Nichols, John Channing, EAST, Deamon, XabbaRus, kilorocky, and others come to mind.

My challenge to you: if you have been posting here since way back, search the archives (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB_2002/) and post a link to your earliest post. If you want to claim time from the Matt's Script/EZBoard era. make a claim and post some recollections from that time, what you remember discussing, with whom, and what was the big deal at that time. :) Post your memories, claims, and flat out lies here.

The winner will receive a Subsim Ping Prize, which you can brag about or sell on ebay and then retire.

Good hunting!
Neal

Post your memories, claims, and flat out lies here.
I taught Neal everything he knows, and I helped set up the original forum. I also helped set up the Cavalla museum, where I was most useful because I actually served on that submarine during the First World War. I jumped ship in Vietnam to lead the first airborne in the attack on Suk Muk Dik, but was back on board in time to help negotiate the Paris peace talks. Most recently I helped put out the great Subsim fire, for which I was awarded the Blessed Ugly Lady's Loving Safety and Health In Texas medal.

When people talk about me, they talk about my way with women, my straight shootin', my scintillating conversation and rousing wit, not to mention my muscular body and heroic chiseled jaw; but mostly they speak of my overwhelming modesty.

As well they should.

I drove the horse and buggy, which by a miracle, made it through the snow, uphill both ways, against the earths rotation, to deliver the coffee can and string internet to Neals shack...

PS: The date it shows me joining got FUBAR'd when the Subsim fire Steve so bravely fought to put out...

I remember my first post here

I was in a discussion with Cornelius Jacobszoon Drebbel. We used to call him CJ. His screen name was Cornyzoom. We were discussing the designs of Willy Bourne (screen name StrokerSub)

I remember it well as our discussion was derailed by John Wilkins who went by the screen name Bishop.

Gosh it seemed like only yesterday. :yep:

I searched the archives for awhile, and I found the earliest post i could find, and it was on my old nickname U-421.. The nickname i used for the WPL also.

http://www.subsim.com/phpBB_archive1/viewtopic.php?t=19671

Obviously based on how i was talking, it seems like it goes further back. I was a member of WPL clear back around July 2001, a bit before SH2 was initially released.

I'm certainly not the oldest member as I joined in 2005. I did nothing but lurk or was busy playing IL2 and did not hang here much. Then, low and behold in 2006, I start a thread and poll that would probably get locked in a New York minute these days:

I guess when I look at my profile and view all my posts, they don't go as far back as when I joined. I joined back in 2003 (I can't believe it has been that long!). I had lurked around a bit before that when I got Jane's 688i Hunter-Killer. I remember downloading a patch for it off Subsim. Anywho, what got me to sign up and register was a contest for Dangerous Waters or SH3 I believe. I don't remember which sim it was (or maybe Sub Command). All I had to do was post in the thread to be entered for a chance to win the game and I think the devs would sign it. I probably got the contest bit all wrong by now, but that is the gist of it.

I found subsim pre- SH2 days, but under a different user name. I couldn't find myself in there. I was the first one to post about problems with the AI for the destroyers in SH2.

The old E:rt posts are funny to read. All of the promised features:roll: :nope: (flyable aircraft, land, etc; then there's multiplayer:nope: ) I think every 3 months there's a post that multiplayer is "almost" ready:rotfl:  .

I wasn't signed up back then so I didn't post, but I read the boards regularly. It's wierd because I remember reading a lot of those posts about 688i HK.

Another wonderful thing I discovered in that archive is links to two 688i HK sites that are actually still up and have downloads. I've been pretty much unable to find downloads for 688i anywhere !

Here is a link for custom scenarios. There's a bunch there that aren't posted in the download area of Subsim:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/9243/688/688missions.html

Also, since 688i has a hard time running right with more than a certain ammount of scenarios in it's scenario folder, here's a link to a utility to manage them that is still up :
http://www.lrim.com/scmgmt/help/toc.html

I'd love to get my hands on more of those old missions ! I recall Seawolves back then had hundreds (Which I had and then lost the floppies they were on) :nope:

I also remember reading this thread and having a bit of a laugh:

You see when I joined in 1999 ... Neal had a different server and as the forum kept growing he changed it like three times to what it is today. Which resets join date and number of post ...

I use to be geetrue2 and enjoyed many good visits to subsim.com to fellowship with like minded people in love with submarines and submarine sims ...

You should have seen the thread wars we had in the old days ... Those guys really knew how to fling it too, but SH2 came and went, SH3 is still hanging in there and SH4 will be top sub sim as soon as the modders get through.

If the good Lord be willing I'll still be here for SH5 ...

@Geetrue: Well slap my mouth!!

I have more proof than my own witness a year and a half ago ... i have old sea stories on a back up hdd ... I'll go find them.

I've been onboard since 1999 ... started out as geetrue2.

Been through several server changes ... someone said those old sea stories were still floating around out there in the wheeo' wheeo' world.

Ask Torplexed or Takada ... I was here before they were ... I was here for 911 waiting for Destroyer Command to come out.

Plus I think I attended the first or second sub sim meeting in Los Angeles in the spring of 2002.

I've wandered around the web, but subsim's international community is the best for getting a good feeling for what other people in the world think ... sim wise and world news wise.

Tis True!! I was there with ya G!

As I recall Neal was in LA at some game convention and several of us met him at his hotel and we went out to dinner.

Back in them thar days I spent my time on the Wolf Pack League board..
I remember makin plans on how we would decimate the Destroyer Command players when it finally released...
.. and then when DC was released I became one of the several *ahem* fairly adept Destroyer captains :p
In fact I was leader of First Fleet for quite a while when I succeeded Onager

I wish i could prove it, all i remember is i ordered a cd with mods on it from Subsim for SH2, unless Neal keeps records of who buys what he might find one from a Guy in New Zealand and hopefully that was me!. What i do know back then around 2000 and up is i had to be taught how to make my own email address by a work mate i remember that clearly as he showed me how to make a hotmail address up! :) As i had no internet at home only at work so i was new to signing up to sites. But damn if i know what my user name would of been i had some guesses as i was a big fan of Quake with the user names "Kaos36" & Frank36 - Frank my name 36 was my age, so maybe I signed up on subsim with one of those names? Ive search some of the archives but with no luck. :damn:

Maybe one day i'll remember the name and find it on here.:hmm:

Thank you StdDev for the confindence building witness of we were there ... but that was 2002, right?

About five of us and Neal I do believe ... I had to pull over in Orange County on my way back to San Diego and climb in back to take a rest I was so tired, but it was a lot of fun to finally meet people in person that had previously just been user names.

But I got here to the old Sub Club in 1999 ... surely Neal has a member list from the old days somewhere ... did the WPL have numbers of when we signed up?

Here's the first post from a simple online search that I can find:

Reply more mystery

I want to explore harbors on my own and run into trouable. I've explored two harbors so far after blowing or completing the other missions. Cape Town in South Africa and Norfolk in the USA.

I just wandered around the harbor in Cape Town and blew up the city and warfs, but in Norfolk a patrol plane kept coming in for me.

I want to see ships and activity in the ports and get credit for sinking a tug or a barge or whatever comes along. Did they have sub nets in WWII? Put them in the game. We should be able to shoot up a shipyard for example and then try to make a safe get away.

I understand if you just want it to be like historical, but I want to change history for $39.95.

I found my old sig too:

Well if that counts as "evidence" then double BS.. :smug: I've been playing subsims since I was six...I had a baking soda powered one for the bathtub...and a red and grey plastic one ,also for the bath, that actually fired spring powered torpeos...then there was the periscope that I won at the county fair and painted sub mark lines on the lens... I used that to play with when while I watched SILENT SERVICE on TV..which hadn't been invented all that long...never mind computers..that takes me back to age 6 or 7 ...then there is my hypnotist's report,if you can believe her, that I had a past life as a German submariner back in WWII...need I go on... ;)

Many years ago, Sailor Steve and Neal came to me, asking for my help to set up the forums. I remember it clearly as I'd just devised a means of producing operationally safe cast iron cannon and had some spare time. I said:

"Sure I'll help thee, as I like the cut of both of yer jibs. My, how handsome you are Sailor Steve, you must get many a bashful look from the good womenfolk about these parts. For sure this war with the French will be over soon, we have the cannon to best them in combat! Cast Iron is the metal of the future I tells thee. But be warned! With thy plan for a board, one day, someone will make a joke so awful that ye be not sure if ye laughed and then groaned, or groaned and then laughed. Either way, you'll groan."

I'd like to take this opportunity to say:

"I told you this day would come"

Hi,
don't know but it was before 2000 that i found Neal's forum. I have been playing "Silent service II" for PC, and "Wolfpack", and "Hunt for Red October", and "Das Boot" then.
When i registered in subsim.com first it was by the name of "Fish", however after some new forum software someone from the Netherlands "stole" this name, so i changed to "Catfish".
Was the first registered name of "Fish" in 98 or 99 ?

B.t.w. i still wonder if i sent this book of the russian sub to Neal, and whether he really received it back then :hmm: . I know i got Fast Attack from him when i could not find it here - man i was happy !

Greetings from Germany,

I just Don't like the long Load time of that Sim. That's just me.:D

I have e-mail contact with Jim Wolford and he is still around.
I can't remmber the guy who had some of the first SH1 forums.
That was a long time ago.

Started posting at subsim.com September 2001, was playing Sub Command back then, and doing lots of graphics for that sim, ships and planes, also a couple custom missions (Hauraki Havoc for example).

I still remember old forum members from back then, people like XabbaRus and Thomasew.

Was AWOL for at least 4 yrs or so, and only recently came back to submarine simming (SH3 which I no longer play, and now SH4) - was no question for me about where to look for hints and mods - there's no place around like this one

I've been around Subsim since 1998. My family got their first computer back then. It was a Compac 350 mhz computer. A little after I got online and found out about SHI and could not get it to run until someone here at SubSim gave the directions on how tog SH1 working. If you look under downloads on the SubSim website and SHI. You'll see two things for Custom Missions made by Jeff Johnson (that's me). Don't post all that much anymore, but I still come around on a daily basis to check on what's happening.

I'm right at the top of the list.

5/9/2002 is the earliest post I see in that old forum .

I'm not the oldest member by a long shot, but here's the link to my oldest post I can find in the archive http://www.subsim.com/phpBB_2002/viewtopic.php?topic=752&forum=2 . I was an SC fan back in those days and still play it occassionally but SHIII/GWX seems to take up most of my gaming time these days.

Neal - I have often thought that the oldest active member should have the highest ranked avatar rather than link it to the number of posts a member has submitted, but I suppose that would not be easy to do.

The oldest message on the linked forums for myself dates back to January 2003, but before that there was another board. It was simple to use and banter went back and forth, but there wasn't much banter going on 3 September 2000 around 2300 AEST.

That was the moment that the game Iron Wolves was turned off.

I was prowling in the SW after performing yet another Area 51 excursion. On line at the time were Mongoose, Tbar, Buxton, Taffy, Silvercat, Silvercat, Erich the Red(?). Popeye had 'vanished' about an hour before and never came back. My bud Drizzt had just racked up his highest score ever in a lite sub (I'm gonna say 935000). We had not long before just looked at the high scores kept by On Line (the provider of the game) and we were talking about the proliferation of names on that list.

I had a listing in the top 10 of all missions, and was in the all time high score of every vessel - except the DD. (Even my eldest was in front of me in a DD)

We were talking about a forthcoming trip I had when all of a sudden, the server went dead, and never came back to life.

On this, and another board, we logged our approaches back and forth and what we were doing, refunnds on unused credits, continued debitting of our accounts, no answer at their office. A sour taste left after a great period in time.

Remember the BB Melee's? So much fun.

Don't actually know how long I've been around, I think since mid 2001.
Edit: My profile says Feb so there you go. I was a mere 14 year old then.

Im not the oldest by a longshot, but ive got quite a fiew posts in ever sense I joined. Joined mid july. Was lurking around for a couple of months.;) I guess il tell ya where I came from. I use to be on the ship simulator fourms, Then one day when I was lurking around here, I noticed that the SH4 section wasnt open anymore... I knew that Reece was a member on this fourm so I asked him ( he is/was on there to) He told me about what happend and that was what gave me the push to join SS. Then there was a topic about what you would like to have put into a add on for the game, I mentioned that Id like a bismark or warship add on, Then All H*** broke loose. One guy got sarcastic with me and I said good buy to that place. They have a issue with warships without working guns being put in the game.:shifty: But I tell you one thing. I wish I would have joined SS sooner.:D

:nope: Unfortunately I never really got into Subsim then because my interest were onto other things. I regret it today that I didn't sign up earlier because I see now the wonderful people here and the old dinosaurs who continue to keep this forum alive. All I should have done was take a bit more time reading the forum to understand the potential Subsim offers then I might have been ancient like you guys. :p

Compared to other forums I've been member to Subsim feels like a family at a gathering. We have good days and bad day. We laught and fight. We drink and party. We cuss and appologize. People from all over can come and share some thoughs, experiance and fun. On occation some of us get spanked....:damn: and meet bernard behind the bars. :arrgh!:

A short time ago I was fishing around one of Neals ancient articles reference how Deep Domain was founded. It is good reading, and I can not find my way back to it. I would like to finish reading the article. I have clicked on every imaginable link for over an hour trying.

This was about twwo weeks ago, and it would be a shame if Neal lost it due to recent server issues.........Who wants a gold star in exchange for the missing link?

I joined this forum in 64 BC. I helped Julius Caesar conquer Gaul, and by conquering Gaul we found this website laying around in a Gaelic toilet.

So you find a submarine there...

Better next time, ask Julius to flush the toilet.

Wow, what a trip down memory lane! And funny that I recognize so many names after not being around much since SH4 came out. Cappy, Frank, FAdmiral, Lanzfeld, Lane, Orzel, Warship, Hense.... Wonder how may of us old-timers are still around. It'd be great if somebody made a list of old forum names and we had a roll call. Wish i had time to be more useful!

Ironically, some of my earliest recorded posts were bitching about Janus errors in SH2 and why the heck hadn't they fixed it yet :DL I think I found Subsim while looking for info on how to get SH1 to work with WinXP and was shocked to find that SH2 was in the works.

p.s. Trying to remember the handle of the dev/production guy who used to come around way back in the day. Had a cowboy and horse icon; believe his name was Mark. Might have been from SSI?

I think I joined the WPL in 2001, I wonder if there is any memory of it's existence, that was a lot of fun... The K.R.A.P. stories :o

I wonder if Neal remembers me, if not this may jog his memory.

I'm about two years late in discovering this thread but it reconciles a puzzle for me. You see I could swear I started lurking subsim back in 1998 but my join date shows 2002. With this thread Neal explains what happened and my memory is restored as well.

You see in the early days there was only a couple of hundred of us and Neal would email us all when new developments would come up. I suppose he still does. With this thread I now remember Neil emailing about the forum switch over.

I'm no longer sure how I discovered Subsim Review but it might have been when I came across Neal's review of his own childhood game.

Ahhhhhhh yes. I remember when Neal annoyed the Pharoah by trying to make a submarine shaped pyramid.

When that didn't work,he tried to sell the Minoans the idea of building a submarine. They gave him the cash to build one and sent Neal to a shipyard on Thera. Unfortunately,Neal attempted to build a Nuclear Sub, But since he tried to build one a few thousand years too early,it kinda went boom. (And scientists STILL think that was a volcanic eruption).

After THAT debacle,Neal managed to con the Greeks into building a submarine. His first attempt sank. His second attempt caught fire and sank. His third attempt exploded, caught fire and sank. Finally,Neal decided that trying to build a sub wasn't such a great idea after all. (An interesting fact is that the Hunley was actually based on a Neal Stevens design that Professor Hunley found on a Hierogliphic in the Great Pyramid in Egypt.).

Eventually,Neal hit on the idea of having a Submarine web site, but since papyrus wasn't a very effective way to do it,he chose to wait till computers were invented.

Shewt... everyone knows that Neal founded this place with a basket full of hardtack and ten-thousand flagons' full of the earliest member's homebrew grog (just add water! =D). That latter bit would be my specialty... dehydrated grog, y'know. It's all the rage up in the Uhlaskuhn Pun-insula, where men are harder than hard and wimmin complain that it ain't hard enough. :yep:

Visit Uhlaskuh... or we'll kick your ass! :yeah:

Can't you let someone win?

Shouldn't the board owner have won by default? Or is this a thread of usurpers?:D.

Neal Stevens sir, you win!

Go on prove me wrong!

(soopaheroes always side with winners)

Yeah, by now there should be a prize. Where do we stand, who is leading the pack so far?

There ain't no place that I ain't been
Around the world and back again,
And I'll whup the man that says it isn't so!"

I'm not sure. I capitalized on dehydrated grog last month, so that should put me in first place. :03:

I think that Neil Stevens should get it, I've seen him mentioned a lot over the years but no-one ever gives him any credit.

Oh heck no! He Neils to me.

Neal Stevens, on the other hand, is a friend who would never ask something like that. Of course he recognizes that my bad old knees would refuse to get up again, and he hates to hear a grown man cry.

I think that's one of the signs of the end of the world. :o

As the Mayans wrote in an as-yet undiscovered proverb on primitive lawn care,

Before the world goes kaput, we think it's only fair that we leave a small, insignifcant clue for the future doomsayers to argue over:

He who drives a lawnmower in his black socks, whilst wearing sandals, shall be the harbinger of your impending collective demise. So be it known that on the day the Google Heathens steal his soul into their cartography records will be the day that the end of the universe as we know begins to unfold.

Have a great day! =D

-The Mayans

This Neil Stephens fellow must be some sort of ethereal lynch pin that holds that universe together. Kinda like the Fifth Element in a way. :hmmm::yep::D

Damn didnt realise I had been floating around for so long, granted not as long as most of you but still, 7 years ain't bad. Don't think I've contributed anything in that time but still. ;)

Dispute hat my info says here, I actully joined as COWBOY10 way back 5/1/2005, sadly my login password has long since been forgotten by me, and certainly the email address used to register that account has long gone, which means I can't get back in there.

Hence I started my new account here, this one. Cowboy10uk, which is the username I was going for in the first place, no idea why I didn't put the UK at the end last time.

So I'm guessing it will be 8 years in 3 weeks, and this community is still as helpful and as wonderful as ever. That everyone is an acheviment.

Fingers crossed it will last for many many years yet.
