I play just career and am into 1940 with several hundred tons and a happy crew - we enjoy ourselves. We perform our obligatory assignment then head to our favorite lanes to hunt.

Today I accidentally hit a quick mission and found myself in a friggen gun battle with the Bismark and the Brits - almost had my knickers in a twist. I spotted capital ships that were easy targets but opted to take out the escorts that carried depth charges on their arses.

I took a stern shot on one so I could push away full ahead and sunk the squirt. The other came tootin fast but I was well clear and he seemed to be looking for survivors - I quickly put my bow to him as he circled and slammed him with 2.

By then the capital ships were aways away and I surfaced and bore down to within range and put one belly up. I lost the other and tried an intercept but came on 2 merchants and dispatched them both.

When I headed for the barn - not even a stinkin commendation, candy bar, or strudel on a stick. Stinkincheapinskattens. Helga was there of course waiting for me.

The first time I played that Bismarck mission I saw that I started submerged and decided to pop up for a quick look around. So I popped up...right next to the Nelson! Mission over.:dead:

In the early development of GWX we tested a mission (Iceland or something similar) and the U-boat starting position was a couple of hundred metres away from the Howe or the Anson....but surfaced http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/c_jane24/Smileys/4_6_100.gif

What are persicope and hydrophone for then ? :hmm:

It was a single mission! I played single missions in SH2, and they always started you submerged, and the ships you had to sink were always off in the distance somewhere! How was I to know this would be different? Yes, I was new to the game! It's not like the time in the Naval Acadamy when I was shelling a merchant and got too close and he blew up right next to me and killed me and my career and one of the Acadamy's best instuctors!

Wait...did I say that out loud?

Actually a video doesn't tell you anything about that particular game. SH2 was buggy, but it got fixed. The graphics were pretty good for the time, and it had multiplayer with Destroyer Command so you could have guys trying to attack convoys and guys running the escorts trying to sink the u-boats. All-in-all it wasn't a bad game; it's only real problem was the campaign, which was nothing more than a bunch of scripted missions with no replay value at all. No actual career, and no variety.

Hehe, Don't know who they are but I bet it has something familiar to famous Tom and Jerry right ?

I always thought it was impossible to make playable destroyers and u-boats together in the game but now.. ?
How come this feature never got into SH3 ? :hmm:

Walker and Macintyre were destroyer captains (or something like that) in WWII. They were famous for being very skilled at killing U-boats using some kind of tag-team tactic. IE: Since a DD will lose contact with a U-boat when making attack runs, they basically used one DD for attacking and the other DD would stand back and listen for the sub. A lot of the aces were lost to this kind of tactic. Otto Kretschmer's U-99 was captured using this tactic I believe. Or at least by one of these two commanders.

Anyway, yes it's possible to have DDs against U-boats in multiplayer. In Dangerous Waters there are many platforms to choose from (Helos, DDs, subs, planes). The SH2/DC combo was really neat and I had a lot of fun back in those days. But it was not without it's problems.

Do you guys remember the never ending dispute of headhunting?

For those of you who don't know, back in those days DD players hated getting fired at. All they wanted to do was ping us the whole game, dropping their bombs, while we crawled in the deep waiting to die.

I'm guilty of it on several occasions. I remember one game in particular where a DD was coming strait at me (no zig-zaging) before I even got close enough to shoot at the convoy. What was I supposed to do? Just dive and spend the whole game trying to evade his wabos and never get a shot in? Ugh, no thank you. So I sat there at PD (scope fully extended and making a nice wake) waiting for him to come closer. And then I fired a torp straight at him at close range. He had no time to evade. The part that makes me laugh till this day is that as soon as I heard "Torpedo teffer!" (or whatever it is they say) from my speakers, this guy was hearing something like "We've been hit!" at the same time on his end. What did he do? He paused the game.:yep:

That was just GoldenRivet making a joke about my 'Bismarck' story. I surfaced right next to the Nelson, and they way I knew they had spotted me was when they blew me out of the water.:dead:

As for SH2 and Destroyer Command, we played them at Neal's 'other' subsim site http://subclub.info/wpl/. They still do multiplayer there, but I'm pretty sure it's all SH3 co-op. If they were still doing adversary SH2 stuff I might be tempted. I have some fond memories of those days. A lot of them are of just hanging out it their chat room waiting for a game.

No, like I said it was a single mission and I wasn't too concerned about it. And in something like the Happy Times mission you started surfaced and miles from the convoy, so I just figured...
