Microsoft Enlists Jerry Seinfeld In Its Ad Battle Against Apple

Microsoft Corp., weary of being cast as a stodgy oldster by Apple Inc.'s advertising, is turning for help to Jerry Seinfeld.
The software giant's new $300 million advertising campaign, devised by a newly hired ad agency, has been closely guarded. But Mr. Seinfeld will be one of the key celebrity pitchmen, say people close to the situation. He will appear with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in ads and receive about $10 million for the work, they say.

The new ad effort is expected to use some variation of the slogan "Windows, Not Walls," according to several people familiar with the ...

Dunno about that. Seinfeld is not exactly a huge name any more.

I know that I am very happy now that I moved from my PC to my Mac. For people who don't care for Vista, OS 10.5 is pretty good. it is like everything Windows should be but here it works.

Now for my game playing I still have my PC system but for serious computer work, I am most happy with my Mac.

I used to feel the same way. I just got sick and tired of Windows crashing so I took a chance on the new Mac OS.

I admit that the older Mac OSes were crapola, but Leopard is pretty nice.

I hope they're as funny as the Mac ads. Somehow, I don't think Billy is going to be as funny as "PC" is.

As far as the system crashing - that should never happen.

that's my point entirely. :yep:There ya go. Same can happen on a Mac with that mindset. Mac's actually have more vulnerabilities in them than Windows by the way.

They recently put up a Linux box, a Vista box, and a Mac and said whomever hacks it first gets to take that system home. Mac fell in 10 minutes. Vista box held out for almost a week. Linux box survived.

Persoanlly I hate computers. But I had to get one when my typewriter bit the dust. Then i discovered combat sim games. Vista I cannot tolerate. XP has worked out ok. I was going to convert my laptop to vista, but cannot because all the doohickeys in the damn thing are made just for that stinking program. I basically have to gut the laptop and rebuild it. Thinking about taking it to the shooting range anyway. My brother in law has been a computer geek since day one. He finally switched to Mac as well and loves it. I will stick with this one though because I need to buy the new Dodge Challenger.

Did the Vista box last a week because it could not boot up?

Or did it keep crashing every time the hacker tried to get in.

And who exactly was "they"?

Got a citation for this or did you hear about it on the internet?

Or perhaps no hacker wanted to take the Vista box home so they did not even try?

For a free computer, I would concentrate on the Mac also.

Might as well go home with the better computer. :rotfl:

I have a copy of Linux at home. I have always wanted to load it up in one of the many PC carcasses we have at home and just play around with it.

Many people like it a lot.

For those of us who are not computer gurus, Mac is a nice choice nowadays. I got mine after getting sick of having to tinker with my PC all the time.

There are good arguments for both, but the nice thing about Leopard and bootcamp is that my Windows can fail me as catastophically as it wants, but I can always re-install it from the Mac portion of the HD.

I've had my iMac since February, and no problems yet. Even Vista is behaving abnormally well. Maybe it's just me, but that's a record none of my PC's ever topped.

The Mac fell nearly instantly through a hole in Safari. The Vista box eventually fell to a Flash vulnerability. Linux box survived probably because Linux is like a mutt - its strong. Any time a hole is found, anyone with coding experience can fix it. With Mac and Vista, you usually have to wait for one company to do the work.

Here is a blog on that contest - Vista only held on for 3 days it seems:

Flash is not an MS application though, so I don't rate this as MS's fault.

Security Vulnerability Showdown: Mac OS vs. MS Windows Vista vs. Ubuntu (Linux ) (http://blog.loaz.com/timwang/index.php/2008/03/30/security_vulnerability_showdown_mac_os_v)

Filed under: Conference (http://blog.loaz.com/timwang/index.php?cat=80), Microsoft (http://blog.loaz.com/timwang/index.php?cat=101) — timwang @ 10:09:25 pm
One of the most "exciting" conference took place in town last week - The CanSecWest conference 2008 (http://cansecwest.com/) (the world's most advanced conference focusing on applied digital security) was held in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. And of course, the most exciting event in the conference would be the "PWN2OWN 2008" contest, where three laptop computers each equipped with Mac OSX 10.5.2, MS. Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, and Ubuntu 7.10 (linux) are put to the stand to some brilliant "hackers" to break. The first person succeed take the laptop he/she breaks plus a cash prize. Specific rules applies to each day of the contest, regulations will be gradually relaxed over time, but the cash prize is also shrinking while the clock is ticking...

The first day, under the strict condition that only the default OS could be targeted, no security breach reported among all three machines. The second day (Thursday, Mar 27th, 2008), stand applications like email clients, browsers were allowed to be targeted and guess who was the first to go? The brand new MacBook Air with OSX 10.5.2 went down due to an undisclosed Safari (the default web browser for Mac) flaw. The Windows Vista held one more day and went down on the third day (Friday, Mar 28th, 2008). On that day, the contest rule was even more relaxed where more "popular applications" can be installed on the laptops. Thanks to an previously unknown flaw in Adobe's Flash software, thus the Windows Vista fell...

The Sony Vaio laptop running Ubuntu remained "un-compromised" at the end of the conference. The MacBook Air winners collected $10,000 and the Vista breakers collected $5,000. What a nerve wracking event!

Actually according to the article the Mac was cracked on the second day and the Vista was cracked on the third day.

Not exactly 10 minutes vs almost a week now is it?:nope:

But still, on this experiment, the Vista machine did last longer than the Mac, I will grant you that :yep:

Considering that it wasn't time that was the deciding factor, but what part of the the system you could attack, I think it's still very telling that Mac went down first. All the hype about how superior Macs are in regards to security are exactly that, hype. They don't get hacked as often because they are a small percentage of the overall computer population and aren't economically attractive to hackers (except in this case).
