There are three basic facts to keep in mind about the smokin’ little war in Ossetia:

1. The Georgians started it.
2. They lost.
3. What a beautiful little war!

For me, the most important is #3, the sheer beauty of the video clips that have already come out of this war. I’m in heaven right now.

Read on a "war nerd" Gary Brecher

Yes, the article is quite a read. That is what I call an analysis with no emotions. :)

Interesting author, too:

On June 25, 2008, the following revelation is made on citypaper.net [2] (http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2008/06/26/nonfiction-reviews)
in the course of a review of the War Nerd book: But the War Nerd is, in fact, neither of those things. He is not even Gary Brecher! Brecher is the creation of John Dolan, a poet, novelist, lecturer in English at the University of Victoria, and The eXile co-editor. That's very exciting news for the War Nerd's regular readers: The columns you've been dissecting and debating for the last six years were written by an English professor who writes poetry!
according to wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Brecher )

Interesting who he writes for, too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_eXile

Yes i read that too, but given the war nerd makes no claim as to any professional expertise on the subject, even if this claim regarding his identity is true, it makes little difference.

And in short it does not bear on the quality of the writing, and i had a look at the eXiled and thought it looked great :D

I only said it was interesting. It was definitely excellently written. It's just good for people to know whose work they're reading. Not everyone takes the time to look at who the author is and what the publication is about. I did and thought that it was interesting enough to share the information.

Edit : Judging by the cover of his book, presented at the end of the article, he does, indeed, appear to claim to be quite the expert.

the war nerd makes no claim as to any professional expertise on the subject,

he only makes the claim that he is a war nerd, having learned everything he knows as an amateur through the reading of journals, books and internet articles

although you say again you only said it's interesting...i can't help feeling you have some kind of point to make

My point was already stated. Some folks don't take the time to see who it is they are reading and to point out that, if one did not take the time to read more than the article and look at the book cover, one might "ass-u-me" that the author was some expert in the field of warfare.

To make it perfectly clear, I don't imply anything about the mans work or the publication he publishes in, only that we should all take the time to research authors and their publications and make our own judgements.

No problem:|\\I can see how my posts might have been taken that way. Sometimes I expect others to do what I tell my wife I am not capable of (reading minds:rotfl:).

For you policy wonks, here are two videos from CSPAN relating to the conflict:
