And I don't mean destroyers

I'm playing the game with no mods (I wanted to get a feel for the game and play through a career before starting up some mods...probably GWX). So far all I can find is a Fiji light cruiser docked at Loch Ewe and haven't run into anything bigger anywhere else. It's mid-1942, by the way.

I havent encountered that many either other than a few escort vessels attached to convoys, and i've played a few careers by now, except in the areas you speak of,with Scapa Flow being Britain's main naval base.
I myself am in April 1942.
Your best bet may be to do some research on WWII in general and take some notes of the dates of major events/battles.From this information you could think to yourself "Rommel is about to invade N.Africa round about now, maybe I should position myself in an attempt to intercept any military build ups or landings in that area, particularly on D-Day,which was of course June 6th 1945.I expect Tobruk and round Egypt to be crawling around the time Rommel invaded N.Africa,I may be wrong too.
I may be wrong with this strategy but its as good as any,and I myself play with these things in mind.It could help you find a task force heading somewhere. :hmm:
In general,I reckon in my personal opinion that most major military engagements may be encountered later in the war,say the beginning of 44 right through to 45.

:D Hi there Paul Riley!
Take a trip to Gibraltar drive through the strait ,and in the northwestern corner in Gibraltar harbour you will find "HMS Nelson"

1).

And in the mediterranean you will find "HMS King George V"http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll60/StarLion45/Screenshot45.jpg

Paul, D-day was on June 6th 1944! Not 1945, but at least since such good tips are given out, i might aswell try to give it a go on hunting the battleships.. Always good change on sinking the merchant vessels.

Nice little shots you have there sealion.

Personally, being British I have a real innate aversion to opening fire on the King George, named after a good man indeed.Still...its a dirty job and someone has to do it :nope: ;)

If I was to attack the George I dont think I would be doing it in broad daylight,a night attack seems much safer.A good job you did evidently.

:D Hi there:D
In the mediterranean in 42,you can sink King GEORGE V easy.
In grid "CO69" you'll find him .
First time I was in the Mediterranean , I came over a task Force contents :

1-HMS King George V
2-HMS Nelson
3-HMS Rodney
+ A couple of Destroyers and Auxillery cruisers:yep: Was I stressed??? Oh yes:o :o :o
When you're in the mediterranean you'll always find that task force in grid "CO69"

When I saw it I looked like this :

I wouldnt call myself a 'loser' ,rather 'new to the fold' instead.I know you didnt mean anything bad by that statement, just thought I would say ;)
Say,just to change the subject very slightly, does it annoy you sometimes, with this silly modern talk about nubes, noobs, pwned (whatever that tripe is supposed to mean) to attempt to describe someone that is either: 1:young 2:relatively inexperienced and needs some info?.This stupid talk from kids today trying to be really impressive in front of the grown ups,and all knowing, really pisses me off! :stare:
I havent seen stuff like this in here yet,and its very unlikely too,but I have seen many examples in other forums, they seem to forget that they too were green once *the insolent fools*

Anyway,cheers!

Many warships are present in their historical theatre of operations. More info you may find in GWX 2.1 manual. Those informations are rather acurrate.:yep:
There're many posts concerning this subject on the forum. All you have to do is ... to search:ping: . Warships may be found in harbours f.e: Scapa Flow, Loch Ewe, Reyjkjavik, New York, Gibraltar (my favourite), Alexandria, Port Said. You may check movments of large or small Task Forces using SH3 Campaign or Mission Editor Tool attached to your game. For more info how to use it - check posts on the forum:ping: .
The best area to meet Task Force is Med. theatre of operations, especially from mid 1942 to late 1943.

Thanks for this info cezbor.I always knew that Gib would be crawling with warships as it was and probably still is a major British port.I think the history behind Gibraltar goes back to the colonial days, and as the British empire broke up and with France getting occupied the Brits moved their med. centre of control to Gib.?.Someone correct me here if I have the details of this wrong.

Cheers.

I've gotten into scapa several times, and Gibralta once or twice, only warship I ever found was an Old revenge class ww1 drednaught one time in Scapa. Are there specific dates when the ships are in port or is it random?

Stumbled across these two bad boys by chance in AM 32, late february 1940. I chose to focus my 4 torps on the HMS Hood and as you can see it worked!

They were escorted by 5 or 6 destroyers but I found a gap haha

It was sort of coincidental too. I was travelling around Britain to go to the bay of biscay / atlantic area when intel came up about a convoy ENE of me travelling west. So i plotted a position to ambush it, waited, and the time i had calculated with the given speed, nothing had showed. I decided to wait a little bit longer and then my sonarman had these guys as a contact, coming from the west!

Funny thing :)

Amazingly,

the next day when i was about to get underway south again, I found a completely unescorted convoy coming my way with about 20 merchants, but, in the center, a Nelson class battleship!! And not a destroyer in sight.

But i thought it'd be unrealistic to sink two huge capital ships in one cruise so i only went for the merchants and sank 5 of em (although the game only credited me with 4)

88000 tons, my best patrol yet !!! I'm loving this game all over again ;)

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if vanilla SH3 would consider historical happenings and add the appropriate ships/shipping. Also, I'm a bit bummed now because I managed to sneak into Gibraltar before, in horrid weather, and only saw a T2 Tanker and a bunch of smashed-up destroyers in berths. I never tried to check around for a capital ship to the NW :damn:

:-? It's a terrible weather sometimes!
But remember , in fog and rain it is almost impossible to spot you:yep:
In Gibraltar harbour you will see , 2 "Southampton" class ,1 "Warspite",
in the northeast corner close to the harbour .And besides you have "HMS Nelson" too in the northwest corner:p And you can run silent out of that harbour , reload , and go back in again:up: Be sure to run silent , and in periscope depth about 13-14 meters:lol: Then you became a very , very , dangerous "Silent Hunter" http://content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/00020077.gif (http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&ref=10)

The KG5, Nelson, and acompanying Didos, Fijis will show up south-south-west of Crete 2-3 days into a mediteranean patrol (Most likely from Malta to Alexandria). I am based in Suda Bay (no magic carpet), I meet them every patrol from 1942 all the way until April 45, my last patrol. It's too easy already to the point it's no longer fun.

In my previous career, You can alway lay outside Hebrides to attack Task Forces going from Scapa to Firth.

That's way I chose to approach on the surface at night (which probably wouldn't be a good idea later in the war because of the radar - I did it in June 1941), and dived to periscope depth just before the first torpedo impact, going for the deeper water in the center and east side of the bay, and passed bellow the net (~50m depth).

(...) going for the deeper water in the center and east side of the bay (...)

Be aware of a minefield right in the center of the bay (may 1942). Yesterday I've hit one of these baybies. I was lucky it cosed only minor damage (6% HI). I suggest east approach. Theres deeper water. Be aware of the subnet too. Good luck:up:

I guess I was very lucky not hitting the mine, as I passed almost through the center of the bay, little bit to the east. Twice. :D

I did hit the net once, assuming that there is a gap in the middle, because one patrol craft constantly monitors the area. There's no gap. :damn:

And I agree with you, it's safer on the eastern side.

When I was finished to do my duty , I decided to take a trip to Gibraltar harbour
to bag 36000ton Battleship HMS Nelson:cool:
I am in late 1942 and I have a VII sub.
I was almost in ,when a destroyer pinging me and finished me:damn: :damn:
So I never , never patrol in Gibraltar harbour in 1942-45 again .NEVER:stare:

I agree, it spoils the fun of the hunt and ruins any pleasant surprises, now I will only visit there in transit and will no longer sit there and wait for the BB. And I may not start another career in the Mediterranean again after this career.

But on the subject of BB killing, it is a great place to go. Deep water (my new VII/42 can go really deep), predictable route , lots of high value targets to choose from. I will either use a 4-torps spread on a big Nelson or one each against the Fijis/didos. Almost a guaranteed a 30kt trip. If you are ambitious and accurate, you may try a 2-torp spread at each of the battleships. If you are lucky, you may get them both. (I try, but manage to sink only one of the two at best, sometimes both ship will survived 2 hits each...)

On the subject of easy battleship kills, don't forget the Italia and Roma, they are guarded by the toothless Soldati class when making a run to join the allies August 43.
