Hello folks, I finally started seeing a few liners now in 1942, saw none before that. First one I saw I found in port at Merthyr, which I was raiding. I think I have discovered a killer weakness of the passenger liner that lets you put down a 24000 ton ship with only one eel. If you can get close enough to hit it just right that is.
The spot is directly under the first lifeboat behind the aft funnel, running depth 5 meters, fast T1, impact fused. Startled by this, and in the interests of science, I had to reload my game (which I saved before entering the harbor) and try it again. It's not a fluke, it is repeatable, it works. A hit there causes the ship to instantly explode and gives an "Enemy unit destroyed" message before it's even sunk.

Have you.... in the periscope view, clicked on "ship" (on your notepad) which brings up the liner in your recognition manual and IF you are close enough and pretty much abeam of the liner; "boxes" should appear on the manual page that you can click on for a target shot to a specific area of a ship. Are you hitting one of these? A hit to one of these areas usually will put a ship down with one torp even the C2's.

This would be a wonderful discovery. I spent 4 torpedos on each and it really cost too much. I raid the large transport docked at Southbend southeast coast of England. I used magnetic fuse thinking that it is more powerful than impact, but still it doesn't help much.

Magnetic fuse makes no difference to the power of the warhead, just lets you do things like under-keel shots (Ideal for battleships as these have a a belt of armour about 12-15" thick on the sides, but almost none underneath).
