I wrap up over 100k ton on my 1st patrol at 97% realism with GWX 2.1.

I start by raiding enemy ports, which I find pretty easy during 1939. There were 2 large troop transports sitting at southbend, 1 light cruiser at dover and a large merchant at a french port south east of dover. I pick up more lone merchant here and there with my deck gun, only using torp at large targets or at ports. The the end of the patrol I scores 11 merchants and 2 warships. This is where the fun begins. So far so good. The asw trawler doesn't seems to have active sonar, and as long as I rig for silent running it can never find me. ;)

I love this game.

hang in there and good work!

you really will feel the war start turning against you by late 1942 early 1943... by then the allies will have Anti-Submarine Warfare down to a near exact science.

enjoy the happy times while it lasts.

thx Goldenrivet.

I played some single missions that are set late in war and find that it is very difficult if not impossible to appraoch a convoy for a hit. I have yet to find a detail explanation of ASW equipment that is use in the game. For instance, what are the effect range of each of these detection equipments, and how effective are they? So if my radioman tells me he detect radar, does that mean I am detected? Can they detect my snorkel? What edge do I have over them?

at close range radar can detect an object about the size of a raised fist protruding from a calm sea.

on the other hand... just because you start detecting radar signals doesnt mean your made...usually your detector will pick up radar signals at a range which is slightly greater than detection range.

of course if your using SH3 commander... forget everything i just said, the effectiveness of radar and sonar are randomized by SH3 commander based on historical variations.

check the GWX manual... lots of interesting information in there about ASW technology and evasion etc.

Radioman: "Detecting radar signals, Sir!"

You: "Ahead flank!, periscope depth..."

'tis the only way to be sure. Dive & survive, sail & fail!
