IMO, the Type IID is the coolest boat there is. It has the fastest dive time of any boat, it's underwater sonar signature is low and it turns on a sixpence. With only five torpedoes you have to make sure every one counts and it hones your combat skills in shallow waters.

In 39/40, try patrolling the gap between Orkney and Shetland, then make your way SW towards the Scotland-Hebridies channel. Plenty of tonnage to be found there.

The other thing about this class is that you have a fairly small crew and do lots of shortish patrols, which means they accumulate experience, qualifications and awards faster than with any other type. When you upgrade to a VII or IX, you have an experienced cadre to take with you.

Transfer to Wilhelmshaven at the earliest opportunity as the Kiel Canal in/out will drive you nuts! After August 1940, transfer to Brest and go hunting in the Irish Sea/Bristol Channel. You can do three or four patrols in the same time it takes a VII to do ONE!

My last (unfortunately fatal) patrol in a Type II netted me 21,000 GRT. There are two mods at least that I know of to improve the Type II. If youi are interested let me know and I will track them down for you.

Good Hunting

One of them gives you a 37mm heavy flak (early version) on the foredeck and a twin 20mm flack on the afterdeck (or the other way around, can't remember). Either way it gives you a big increase in surface firepower.

The other mod increases the torpedo loadout. You get another 4-5 torpedoes reserves at the expense of the forward crew quarters.

All in all it makes the "Duck" into a cute boat with a vicious sting!

Give me some time and I'll go looking for them (my memory is not what it was...), and I'll post the links back here.

Right, here is Captain von Keldunk's TypeII Flakship mod: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=136422&highlight=sh3_IID2FlakShip

Found it! This is a "tweak" to game files, by klcarrol, Ubi Forum Moderator: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/4851002995?r=8741023995#8741023995

It actually gives you an extra 8 torpedoes! 4 internal & 4 external. Only trouble is, with so much extra weaponry on board the crew have to sleep on deck!

I don't know about the flakship mod. I expect it is but not sure. As for the "tweak" to get the extra torpedoes, this is to do with game files and will run even in stock. Just make a backup copy before changing anything. Nip over to the Ubi forum and search the mods, tweaks "sticky" there for more info.
