Jokes aside, for open source software I buy or download (I have bought in the past several retail linux distributions, suse 8 professional, some flavors of slackware etc...), it doesn't make a very great difference.
For closed source software the situation is a little bit more complex, generally I buy the retail product and then apply drm-free patches if they are available otherwise I don't buy it.
On the other hand I stay miles away from any kind of download system, I like owning the product when all is said and done.

I can't say I don't download stuff, but I much prefer buying it

if it's a game i love i buy cause it allows longer use and in general games on physic supports don't require activations which can be personnaly i never had some but i've seen on forums sometimes it can be at the origin of prematurate hair falls http://www.emoticonland.net/smileys/Expressions/expresss001.gif (http://www.emoticonland.net)

I have four of those in my basement as supports. Keep the roof up very nicely, but I've never thought to vote with them.

Hmmm someone is on the happy pills today. ;)

Back to the subject in hand, my motto is this. If its free download it if not buy it from the shop.

And someone seems to have missed the joke, which means the joke's on him.;) ;)

For me, as with movies so with games: if it's worth playing, it's worth owning the box.

Unless they are only charging $5 for something, buy don't download. 10 years from now when you want to replay something for nostolgia's sake, you do not have to worry if a company is still in biz or if they even have a server online.

You mean, buy at a store vs buy online and download, right? Not download illegal copies. Right? :hmm:

I have always purchased a physical copy of a game addon. I guess I'm just a little old school and like to have a physical copy on hand. :-?

the deciding criterion for me is wether or not I can make a hard copy at home (if download), and need internet activation or not. Stuff that needs internet activation each time I reinstall it is a no go for me, no matter if download or physical buy. I pay the price for it, than I demand to physically own it, including the ability to sell it away once I got tired of it, or reinstall it without depending on the website for activation still being present, or having internet access. Limited licenses (install three times, then needing to call by telephone each further time) also are unacceptable for me.

Windows XP being one exception, of course. but these days I reinstall once or twice a year from HD image, so...

I buy steamgames and download them, but everything else I have on hardcopy.

I buy when I can, but as McBeck mentioned, sometimes Steam is a necessary evil when you dont want to wait for delivery :yep:

I voted for buy ... "A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush"! Give me a hard copy anyday, plus if the game etc is not really what you wanted, how you gonna sell your downloaded version!

And in the process you give up your right of ownership after having BOUGHT the game/games. :yep:

I always go for buyin Hard Copy's (CD/DVD Roms) which I buy in the stores nearby

1. I dont like the idea of having my PC running when downloading the game and knowing the size of todays games, no way.

2. When I purchased the game I would like to install it immediatly, something that isnt possible with a downloadable because you have to wait till the download is completed (and hopefully no ERROR appears) and no issues with serial/Cd keys you have to activate and receive by E-mail (on a Hard copy the install Key is mostly on the manual)

3. I like to have the game in a nice box so I can store it safely next to my other games.

I always believe in having the actual product in my hands...

It's gratifying, like having solid currency.

And besides, I believe in a few decades, CD and DVD will become something like collector's items that I could sell to collectors or museums for thousands... like some artifact from a time long ago...

Hard copy....invest in future development work.

I occasionally (depending on game/copyright permissions) copy onto disk and use said copy, thus preserving the condition of my original.

I always get a hard copy. Hard drives can fail, viruses can be caught and Windows can screw itself up at any time. It is nice to have that disc sitting there.

I think he tried to bribe the Pole but his Czech bounced.:rotfl:

Sorry I mostly buy boxed, but have been DL more recently purely for convenience. It depends on what comes with the box and how old the game is.
