There are rumors of Thief 4 being in the works.

Here,

"As you can see on Eidos Montreal's (http://www.eidosmontreal.com/) website, they've announced they're recruiting for their second "triple-A" project, and they've provided a hint as to what it might be: "The title begins with the letter 'T'". Now consider that A) Eidos Montreal's website also states (http://www.eidosmontreal.com/en/games.html) that "the first two games we develop will revive successful franchises," B) the other game was previously revealed (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164708) to be Deus Ex 3 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3164551), and C) that both Deus Ex and Thief (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2014439) were created by Ion Storm. Add it all up, and we have a hunch this mysterious second title will be a new installment in the Thief series. Furthering the speculation, Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=130788) reports (via Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/376780/eidos-montral-working-on-thief-4)) that studio head Stephane D'Astous temporarily changed his FaceBook profile picture to a slashed image of the "T" from the Thief logo. When asked by Eurogamer whether they would flatly state Thief 4 is in the works, Eidos declined to comment.
For a game announcement, this is all a little too "Da Vinci Code" for our liking. But if it means another installment in the beloved Thief series -- which would be the first since 2004's Thief: Deadly Shadows (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2014438) -- then we'll take it however we can."

Thief 4! Woo hoo! Hopefully it returns to Thief 1 in feeling! Everyone wanted more of the human levels at the expense of the monster levels. I personally think Thief 1 was great in balance! These people probably wanted more of the human levels because they had never been exposed to such a game prior to this and didn't know what they wanted. Thief 3 was good, but it wasn't the 'great' game that Thief 1 was. Thief 3 is defintely worth playing though.

I wouldn't want to work on that project though. After every Thief release, the entire team gets fired regardless that it was the hottest selling title of the year!???

Thief 4 Announced…ish

http://blog.gameshadow.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/thiefgarrettdt_2.jpg

Eidos Montreal, the new studio set up to develop the third in the Deus Ex series, has announced that it’s working on a second AAA title.

I was musing only the other day on Deus Ex: Invisible War and Thief: Deadly Shadows’ joint development (same engine, same timescale, same developer), and how it seemed reasonable to propose a fourth in the Thief series might be underway in parallel with Deus Ex 3… low and behold, it is.

The official phrasing is ‘Eidos Montreal is proud to announce the recruitment for our second AAA project. A hint! The title begins with a ‘T’…’

What’s more, the Studio Manager is said to be sporting a Thief style letter T on his Facebook profile.

If that’s not Thief 4 confirmed, I’ll eat your hat.

Let’s hope it’s better than Deadly Shadows.

hehe yea it's exciting. I really hope it doesn't wind up being a disappointment. I feel like I've been getting burned by disappointing sequels for some time now.

I still have every Thief game installed on my computer. The ones before 3 had a smoother feeling. Undoubtedly because they were developed with first person view only and not the strange, cheat inducing, hybrid that 3 has with first and third person views. I also like the lean forward move from the older titles. Very useful to look over ledges. I don't think I've seen any other games use lean forward. Why?

aw man, oh yeah that was a port wasn't it? Still though, that game felt like it was meant to be played in third person rather than first. I played first person anyway and eventually used 'The Minimalist Project' mod. That helped make first person feel less.....clunky.

Yea I believe every port I've played has that floaty clunky feeling. None come to mind that weren't floaty feeling.

I played Thief III for a couple of hours. For fans of the original games the series is dead, no matter how many additional titles they churn out. From Bards Tale to Deus Ex to Fallout franchises get hijacked by the dozens these days, guess we gotta live with it.

Deus Ex 2 was not Deus Ex! Deus Ex was the game! I loved that game. If Dues Ex was rated 100%, I'd give Deus Ex 2 a 75% - 80% rating.

Thief 2 I also rate about 85% of that of Thief. Thief 3, I rate about 75% to 80% as well. Downhill slope. Still fun, but not as good as #1.

I want to see a return to the roots of roll playing in Deus Ex. I hear a rumor that may be what we will get!

I've just re-installed my copy of Thief, the game works but locks up after a few seconds/minutes of play :cry:Hmm. Patched?

Turn on Windows 95 compatibility mode - right click the exe for thief, or the shortcut and hit properties - you'll find it under there. Also, EAX may be the cause of your issues - don't use hardware sound and try that. Just some ideas.

Oh - yeah - multicore CPU's have issues like this.

To do this automagically from now on, you might want this little util:

Sequels, sequels!
Imagination is dead?
Or has everything already been invented?

Thanks for splitting it NeonSamurai, I felt kinda bad for going off topic;)

I remember something about some people messing with the idea of multiplayer in Thief 2. I think they had managed to do it. Just not very well. Anyway, it got me thinking. It would be fun to play co-op Thief 4. There would probably even be an interesting way to make it competitive rather than co-op. I'm sure it wont happen though.

Deus Ex 2 was awful. I couldn't even finish it.

Letum, you got me thinking. I wonder what the ratio of originals to sequels are in my game collection. I'll bet if a Thief 4 were to be called something else like uh 'Thievery' I wouldn't know/care about it as much. For the most part, when I purchase a sequel, I am trying to get more of what I loved. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? Just give people more of what they liked. It just doesn't seem to happen though. They change crap too much. I don't see why game designers don't just stick with what worked. I appreciate actual improvements; graphics, interface, AI, whatever. I don't like when they dumb games down though. Which happens in many ways.

I understand it's a business and they try to attract more people, but I just hate that. One of my best examples would be Morrowind to Oblivion. One of my biggest gaming disappointments there. Anyway, it's not like all sequels are bad though. Diablo to Diablo 2 was pretty great.

I wouldn't say everything has been done. How about an open ended RPG set in the Old West of the US . If movies are any indication. There's loads of ideas there that nobody in gaming seems to give a crap about. Where are the western themed games man?! I can name some, but that's just it, SOME. I can name so many of other genres. Ever since I played my first really awesome open ended game (Morrowind) I thought wow. We need more open ended games. There aren't a lot of them.

And another thing, more and more crap seems to be getting turned into MMO's. I hate that.

If Thief 4 becomes a sucky sequel, it will break my heart. At least there will always be the hope that The Dark Mod will one day be released. Even if T4 does suck, at least they are trying and we do get another Thief game. God I hope they make it mod friendly. I can see it now. Years from now I will be playing modded Thief 4 with some awesome user made Thief maps.

ps. In the hundreds of hours I spent on Morrowind, I never finished the main quest.:o

Actually the entire Thief series was very good - T2 being the "cheesiest" of the three. T3 did get more "gamey" in some respects - but the gameplay was still there. I would love to see T4 - or better yet - someone taking the T3 engine and just redoing T1 and T2 with it. Can anyone imagine the Cathedral in T1 with the look of T3?!?!?!?!?!

Lets hope this goes through!

One thing that always annoyed me about the series was how when an enemy goes alert mode they magically become three times as resistant to head shots, even if they don't have a clue where you are.

I know they did it to encourage stealth, but man talk about gamey and cheezy.
