It's August 1940, I'm in the grid BE33 on a VIIB, following a large convoy for almost two days. After four attacks, the only big ship left is the Amunition ship (in fact I hit her in my first attack, but it was a dud :damn:).

The trouble is that I have only two aft torpedoes left.

What would you do? Attack and hope that one hit will be enough to sink her or a least cripple her enough to fall behind the convoy? Or would you head for home hoping to find a less dangerous food for your eels?

BTW, what would be the beat way to sink the ammunition ship with one torpedo? Go for a classical bow hit, or...? The ammunition ship sounds highly explosive to me. :arrgh!:

The convoy is escorted with four destroyers, Hunt I and V&W class, I think. I was able to escape undamaged each time, getting briefly depth charged only once.

Another question. Approaching the convoy for my next attack, I noticed that one ship is still zigzaging at full speed, while the rest of the convoy traveled in straight course, at 8 kt. Is this a normal behaviour, or a glitch? I'm playing GWX 2.1 and I never saw it before. It looks as though she is unable to find her place in the convoy.

Go home and hope find a single ship.

You've just answered all by yourself. I've seen that many times, especially in combined Light Cruisers groups.

My advice, save your torps for a safe trip home. You may need it. Remember tomorrow will come another day. Today you have to do everything to survive until it comes.;)

I would try to fire at least one torpedo at her and hope it hits. With a little luck it explodes completely.

Thanks for the advices. I decided to let her go. One eel might not be enough to sink her, which would make second attack necessary, and executing two convoy attacks for sinking one ship is not worth the effort.

Besides I'm not far from the Tanker alley, and maybe I'll find a juicier target(s) there.

Where is Tanker Alley ??

I'd have used both eels (if necessary) to sink her, then head for home.

Better the tonnage on offer than risk nothing at all.

Where is Tanker Alley ??
Either the Florida Strait, starting in the winter of 1941-42 (within Operation Drumbeat)
Or the Strait of Gibraltar, for convoys supporting the Allied campaign in North Africa

Good hunting, kaleun! :arrgh!:

Where is Tanker Alley ?? In the NE part of grid BE39. There are lot of tankers heading NE or SW. It's not as lucrative in GWX as it is in vanilla, but still you can make a decent tonnage there.

Reaching the Tanker alley, I discovered a 11000 ton Whale factory ship, unfortunately American . But soon after I sunk one large merchant and 2 Granville freighters.

As I departed for home, I got the message that there is another convoy nearby. It will have to wait some other time.

BTW, as I was heading east after leaving the convoy to go on its way, I came across a neutral merchant which I accidentally damaged in the previous attack, slowly limping far behind her mates. At first I tought I'll let her be, but then I saw she's carrying the tanks. Well, she was inside the British convoy, protected by the British destroyers. Neutral, you bet! Wolfgang, man the deck gun! :arrgh!:
I wonder how much renown it wil cost me...

I checked, it's 59... :know:

Now that I know, I'm very sorry I didn't sink that big American Whale factory. :nope:

I would escape and just shoot the eels off at nothing so I can go home. Unless I was sadly lacking in tonnage. In that case I'd go for unescorted ships.

Defintely take 1 eel for a long shot at the ammo ship... never even seen one of those in a convoy, with any luck it'll blow up from the one eel

especially since you don't seem to have very troublesome escorts with this convoy, exploit it as much as you can while you still can :arrgh!:

then head for home

If you're in a good position I would definitely attack the convoy with 1 eel. Hopefully you can disable a ship. Besides you still got another one for your trip home, and your deck gun. Show no mercy, do not hesitate, and your transformation to the dark side shall be complete.

Only two aft torpedoes? I would save them and head for base, as you know the DD'S and patrol craft could be encountered, never know when they become desperate enough you'll need them.
