View Full Version : Different torpedo types?

It is now 1943 patrol 7 and after using the MARK 14 from the beginning, now comes a new torpedo (MARK 23 46 knots steam) or so it seems. Is there anything different about the MARK 23 torpedo other than only having a range of 4100ft with 46 knots speed? Is there a place in this or any forum thats mentions the different types of torpedo's spec's in SH4?
Thank you, Systemlord :D

Mark 23 is a Mark 14 with only high-speed setting / speed selector removed.

Are these links related to in-game torpedo selection as far as function and design? What new torpedos do I have to look forward to in SH4? Maybe electric torpedos that home in on the loudest sound like in SH3? Even if I set the depth of a torpedo to 15ft, the enemy (see's them) starts to slow down and avoid being hit, an electric torpedo doesn't leave a visible trail of bubbles.

How reliable is the Mk 23 compared to the Mk 14, *in the game*?
Thanks.

I tried that and got only SH3 torpedo types, theres no posts on the torpedos for SH4. Thanks anyways.

Yeah..those historical documentaries are informative and interesting but seldom do they transfer intact to game play, now do they?
I imagine that (reliability) depends on which mod or mod combo you decide to use or if you play entirely unmodded or make alterations yourself...and oh yeah..your difficulty options figure in. So there is no real cut and dried answer for that question. Sorry.

Search is a fair weathered friend at best...and sometimes you have to know how to court and coax it to get the answers you need.
But don't ever let anything stop you from asking your question directly. There are always folks here only too glad to help you out if they can.

Try again. There are tons of threads here about SH4 torpedoes, even ones started by me.

Hmm. Reading the post that Systemlord linked, it appears that the Mk 23 is no more as reliable as the Mk 14. The only saving grace is a slightly larger warhead.
Not worth the 100 renown then.

I agree. Just a waste of Renown.
What do you do if you are out of striking distance say 6500 meters from a convoy, you are stuck with the 4100m range instead of the mark 14's 8100m range.

I have always held by the firm belief that anything over 4000 yards was a waste of a perfectly good, if be it faulty, torpedo.

In my world torpedos are never faulty, "Dud torpedos" unchecked in realistic settings.

No self-respecting captain would take a shot at such a long range, unless the target was absolutely stationary.
Even then with the air bubbles generated by the steam-powered torps, it just gives away your presence too early.

I have a question and to avoid another thread, I pretty sure I started at Port Brisbane for my first time. I can't end patrol for some reason, am I supposed to dock at another port from where I started? I'm at the end of patrol 7 with my first try at using my new Balao class sub, this is my first new port from my old port of pearl. Thanks for any help!:D
