View Full Version : UN goes Green
UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The United Nations on Wednesday announced a drastic cut of air-conditioning usage at its New York headquarters for the month of August that will raise the temperature from a crisp 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius) to a balmy 77.
Under a directive from UN chief Ban Ki-moon, the air-conditioning in the 39-floor Secretariat building will be turned off on weekends.
Assuming the temperature change goes smoothly, the "Cool UN" initiative to cut down on energy costs and implement climate change (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/fc/climate-change.html) solutions could be extended for a full year, saving the world body one million dollars and reducing the building's carbon dioxide emissions by 2,800 tonnes.
During the winter, the process would be reversed and the thermostat would be lowered by five degrees Fahrenheit.
"We have succeeded in moving climate change to the top of the international agenda for action, and this means that the UN must take action itself," Ban said in a statement. "We must lead by example and if we are to ask others to take action, we must do so as well."
As part of the initiative, Ban is encouraging staff, delegates and diplomats to relax clothing protocols and wear lighter attire or don their national dress rather than wear business suits as of August 1.
Asked whether the secretary general would be setting an example in this regard as well, Janos Pasztor, head of the the Secretary General Climate Support Team, told reporters: "He will be wearing lighter clothes as well, he has confirmed that."

Screw them! :p
I've had my portable one going full belt this week and no one is going to tell me to adjust my settings. :smug:

Yep, typical mindset of this sort. They do not want you to be warm in the winter or cool in the summer. What a bunch of twits!

That is just pathetic. Then they say:

My bedroom alone gets above 80° with the air conditioner on full blast. Bunch of worthless, rich idiots grouped together calling themselves "role models." Hah.

Seems like most businesses that I enter lately are way ahead of the UN on this score, and have already raised the settings on their AC. Sort of miss being able to find someplace to cool off, especially fast food joints. Might as well go sit outside at Checkers. lol Our home settings have never been below 79F for AC so I guess I have always been green(we call it frugal, but being frugal isn't politically correct).
Definitely don't like the idea of paying for fat cats to sit around thinking up ways to rob my wallet without breaking a sweat.

Are they also going to abandon the use of limousines to ferry representatvies about in favor of hybrids and write all international agreements on 100% recycled paper?
I don't know what's worse; the the U.N. is willing to make policies like this to control global warming when there is a good deal of evidence suggesting man has little or nothing to do with it, or that they would think something as ineffectual as having less air-conditioning in one freaking building would have any kind of impact.
Here's an eco-friendly suggestion for them; stop wasting time, money and resources trying to administrate the world. Nations already have distant, inefficient and inept governments to run their problems. They don't need an even bigger, more distant and similarly inept administration to fail to solve their problems even more spectacularly.
This is one 300 millionth or so of the U.S. that is formally withdrawing from the U.N.:D

This is one of the things I hate where I work. They keep the building so fricking hot because of the whiners but at the same time, we are expected to wear appropriate business attire at all times.
Here in the UK there is no legal limit on how hot your work place can get which is wrong in my view, to have an effective happy work force the temperature should be nice and pleasant to work in. We do have a legal temperature limit at the other end when it becomes to cold.
