Q: the Iron cross from World War 1, where does that W stand for?

I have never really known what the W stands for. If anyones knows then please do tell. This 1 is actualy earlier than the WW1 Cross. The date on the cross is 1870 apposed to 1914.

The 'W' is the Royal Cipher and stands for "Wilhelm I". WWI medal's W stands for "Wilhelm II". The first IC had 'FW', which stood for Friedrich Wilhelm (King Fredrick III).

And yes, the IC you have is from the Franco-Prussian war era. WWI IC has 1914 written on it. :up:

My small russian insignia collection that i really don't want now. Trying to pawn off on ebay lol lost interest in russian medal and insignia. Very nice Russian submarines badge there aswell. Once a favourite sadly it has went down the favourite list lol

Yes, the German stuff is alot nicer. I have never been interested in British insignia or medals. Same with American. There just isn't any style to it. German badges and medals just look brilliant.

Very interesting piece. I wonder whats it origin, as it doesnt look like standard german helmet. Number of rivets is different, and the front bracket? Do you have any info on it? Maybe post war? the rims sharp edges are similar to 42 model, but i think the 42 model had the bottom flared out. :hmm:

This is one of no doubt thousands of german helmets that were issued in spain. Thus slight differences in shape but in the end german. I have no idea about the bracket. I am trying to find out about it:up:!

All I have is a WWII American Steel pot helmet, and then my great uncle's bayonet and bloody bible and bloody letter to my grandmother he was writing.

He was cut down charging an MG42 nest. I keep the helmet in my classroom all the time as decoration. I bring the bible when I talk about D-Day. It makes a nice impression on my students.

where are you located in the UK, Scotland? Anyway you must have big houses over there, that you can store so much old rubbish...nevermind just kidding!:lol:

One remark on your "Wehrmacht Helme" collection, I don´t want to destroy your belief of origin, but from my point of view most of them are no military equipment and even post-war.
In Germany these helmets, especially this helmet shape is quite usual for fire-fighter helmets and they are in use even today.

is a fire fighter helmet for 100% sure, but it is also 3.Reich equipment...possibly the only one of your collection...it was used from 1938 on.
The other ones are most likely post-war. Metal helmets were used in the german fire departments, up to the early 70´s. But even with modern plastic helmets the classic shape still exists, e.g. Schuberth H2 (EN443) helmet:

...is also a post-war fire-fighter badge, didn´t find any grip on it, to prove it´s source exactly, but the symbols are common for fire-fighter related insignia. If it would be a 3.Reich insignia, it would carry the Swastika.

Hopefully By next Tuesday I will have received a Battle Damaged Iron Cross which is very nice looking and a new WW2 Germa High Seas Fleet badge! So they shall be posted soon. Along wioth Some Banknotes from the Depression in Germany. Three 100 000 Deutschmark notes! woo lol :up:

Sadly I don't Siarra. Would be interesting. The Cross Ribbon Loop is gone, crack through the cross, missing corner on the cross. Certainly has seen the war. Thought it would be a change from most of my badges being in fair condition etc:D
