Hello all.

I just found this site and it appears to be just what I'm looking for. I'm impressed.

I've been playing submarines simulations for a number of years. My first computer game in 1990 was "Silent Service II"...then progressed to "Aces of the Deep"....Silent Hunter I....II...III...and now IV.

Now, to my question:

I have a mid-range computer with a NviDia 7600GT video card. Silent Hunter IV runs well at medium graphic settings. It runs OK on high setting, but tends to CTD at time at.

While I am happy with SHIV, however, there are a few things that seem "cheesy" with the stock game, so I'm looking for some mods. I have looked at (and even downloaded some) some of the mods, but I'm not too sure which one would give me the best experience.

So, I'm looking for suggestions of which mods would good to download to "fix" some of the shortcomings of the game. Some of my "pet peeves" with the game:

Too much enemy aircrafts heading directly towards my boat
Too many "contact" reports that do not effect me
Unescorted ships are sitting ducks
Lack of variety of ships

I haven't gotten too far in the war (June '42), so I'm not opposed to restarting my campaign, and I don't know what stock has to offer latter in the war.

I've looked at "Trigger Maru" and "RFB", but I'm not really sure what all they do and what the difference is between them.

I am running 1.4 (no U-boat expansion)

Any suggestions are welcome.

Welcome Aboard Nunya :sunny:

It runs best with at least 2 gigs of ram.

As far as mods go... Try them all and YOU decide.

Good Hunting

Welcome to the forums !

As to the aircraft "Heading straight for you" what are you doing on the surface in daylight hours in the pacific theater :p The aircraft are like roaches, you see one sure as hell there will be more to follow. Stay undetected and that problem goes away.

Anyhow there is a seperate forum section for the Mods. Its quite well orginized and a good helpfull group over there.

Dont forget to get patched up !

Nunya;
it depends on how "real" you want the game. I'm running 1.4 with TMO and RSRD. This definitely "fixes" the too-many-aircraft aspect from the stock game. Your orders are much more practical and IMHO it's a nice balance. The number of unrelated contact reports is cut way back to the point that you'll get reports that are only within a certain radius of your position (at least that's my perception). Then it's up to you to decide whether it's worth the course change/fuel to try for an intercept.

As to the unescorted ships being sitting ducks, that's not necessarily a bad thing, LOL;) The variety is not bad in the TMO/RSRD combination. I've moved to try and intercept a radar contact only to find it was an enemy TF moving at a high rate of knots and no way to catch them. Most contacts are one or two ship groups and only in the known seaways. Give TMO and RSRD a shot I think you'll appreciate it.

Thanks for the welcome and the help guys.

I've already downloaded TMO and a few minor mods to improve things in the game, such as....a mod to change the button color to green when it is active; a mod to improved underwater visability; a mod to make the chronometer smaller; a mod that keeps the "Battle Stations" and "Silent Running" on the HUD; music for the radio; and of course, JSGME. I'll try TMO with RSRD first to make sure it isn't duplicating some of the minor modes....if not, I add the smaller mods.

Smooth sailing!:lurk:

It looks like you have a good reasonable approach to your modding methods. No doubt you'll soon be enjoying a fine depth charging ;)!

All the reading I have done makes one point to keep in mind..

Install a MOD anytime you like, as long as you have docked at your home port (which is autosaved at that moment).

Then shut down the game, use JSGME, restart the game, and leave port with new enhancments active..

(Dont try to save while at sea to expect to enable a MOD to work, it will cause problems.)

First rate advice.

Again read in the modding forum that has tips like this and many others.

JSGME is a must have

Welcome aboard, Nunya! You've found one of the finest game forums on the web, IMO.

As to recommended mods, I consider Run Silent Run Deep Campaign mod (RSRDC) to be a must-have. I also love Pacific Environment, one of the graphical enhancement mods that is beyond description.

The two major gameplay mods are Trigger Maru Overhauled (TMO, which you've already grabbed) and Real Fleet Boat (RFB). I personally play with TMO, and love it.

I run Trigger Maru and RSRD. I don't run Pacific Environments as it tends to overwork my video hardware, and since it seems to be the same for you, I'd suggest avoiding that.

RSRD is great: they've tried to re-create historical Japanese ship traffic, and generate appropriate missions for you.

My suggestion is you try in turn RFB and TM, each with RSRD, and see what you like.

Also go over to the mods forum and read around in the appropriate threads as well, to see what the focus of each mod is.

It is beneficial that you've already played around with the stock game, so you will know what the mods have changed.

I want to thank everybody that gave me suggestions for mods.

I loaded Trigger maru and RSRD for TM and I am having a great time. I played quite a few hours on stock. I never got too far into the war, so I'm not sure if all of the things i'm seeing are from the mods or from the stock game progress, however, the "feeling" of the game is 100% different.

I now have a variety of ships that will actually do a ziz-zag course even if they do not know I'm around. This is a big change from the serpentine course the ships ran in stock.

I'm not bombarded with messages...I don't have aircraft showing up every 5 minutes unless I have been in an area too long.

Instead of spotting 3-5 ships every day, I might spot some ships every 3-5 days turning my previous 30 day patrols (because of running out of fish) into closer to 60 day patrols which are more historic.

My torpedos actually cause me greef by running too deep, prematurely detonating, or becoming nothing more then a "Thud". There is nothing like real life frustration.

Anyway, the game is more in tune with what I felt it should be.

Thanks again!!
