Your on the surface, decks awash, in foggy conditions on still water. Up ahead at bearing 030 there are two merchants. Your speed is 1/3 ahead. The targets are 3000yards away.

Now two scenerios:

1) You dive to periscope depth, at the same speed you were on the surface. Upon reaching periscope depth you pop up your scope and see that the target is performing evasive maneuvers. How the heck did they see you?

You reload

2) Same set up, but you do not dive. Instead you remain on the surface and creep in at 1kt, with the boat deep enough to engage the motors. The targets stay on their course until you are within 1000 yds. Then they both start maneuvering, and the armed ones hit your boat with one shell after the other.

What gives?

Scenerio 2 should not be, but neither should scenerio 1. Why did those merchants make evasive moves when my boat QUIETLY went under water? It is not like I crash dived sending up a huge plume and froth of water as my boat went to flank and went under.

Me thinks there is an issue with the game in this arena.

I asked a same question regarding merchies that started zigging and zagging when i was moving into position at PD at flank speed. I do know that later years in the war, the Japs equipped quite a few of their merchies with hydrophones to detect submerged subs.

But i'm not sure in SH4 replicates that. But, based on my experience, I think it must do. I find it odd they start zigging like nuts when i'm some 8000 yards away and tearing toward em at flank speed. If i'm submerged, the only way they could know i was there is if they HEARD me, ie hydrophones on the merchies.

I really don't mind the zig zagging...whatever caused it.

It is a bit more realistic than those straight as an arrow courses...and of course a bit more challenging.

But you are right that it is somewhat hokey that they start manuovering only once they detect your boat in improbable siutations and circumstances.

If you are running Trigger Maru, you have to keep in mind that TMO is not a realism mod. It is a mod whose aim is more challenging gameplay. Unrealistic things will happen because each Japanese ship has its own copy of Superman on board. Even so, I don't see this behavior happen very often. I see rabid escort follies much more.

Modding is a terrible and dark art, governed by the cruel law of unintended consequences. For each intended consequence of a tweak there are three unintended consequences. Two of them are bad. Ever notice how irritable some modders are?:rotfl:

Not sure if this is a good indication of them having hydro's but sometimes when I make visual contact and then click on the contact from the map screen, the same semi circle with the back missing. (like you see around DD showing there hydro range and blind spot) I always assumed it meant he had hydro's.

To me that sounds logical and conclusive evidence of hydrophones aboard merchants . :yep:

I have not seen that. The usual senario for me has been two merchantmen steaming in line. They spot me on the surface in medium to heavy fog at several thousand yards...:shifty: ... then one keeps coming and starts to zig zag while the other turns tail and trys to make a get-a-way.

Both futile efforts for them... ... but it does buy them another half hour or so of time.
