View Full Version : Making detection by a/c a bit harder?
Okey, I know that the best counter detection measure against patroling a/c is ~40-50 meters of water between your sub and the surface but was just wondering if remaining surfaced and at low speed, so as to "shorten" the sub's tailing wake, is of some consequence in SH4?

I actually don't know whether it has any impact on the visual sighting, but since planes are equipped with radar later in the war it wouldn't help you much anyway. So my advice is to crashdive the moment you spot a plane, be it on radar or (especially) when a lookout spots it.

I was thinking mostly about earlier in the war, actually! :)

You are more likely to be spotted at higher speed than lower speed because of the wake. In SH4, a speed under ten knots is pretty stealthy compared to 18+ knots wide open on the surface. For visual detection speed and aspect ratio are the important factors.

Thanks Rockin Robbins!
It's good to know that some old "tricks of the trade" still apply!:yep:

Actually compared to the huge number of planes that appear very, very few actually end up spotting my boat. Rather than dive every sighting I just make a quick course projection to see if it comes near enough to my position to raise concern. Usually the answer is no.
Unless of course i've done something nasty like sinking one of their ships in the area and they are activley hunting for me.
...and I imagine this might also change depending on the mod(s) one uses.

Seminole--I do much the same and if the range is greater than ~ 5-6 nm I generally let it ride unless I'm sillhouted or something. Is this range too chancy or do you use a smaller range? Because I find I submerge about 60% of the time I'd judge...running TMO only right now.
