Started in 08/39 in the 1st Flotilla as Ltn.Z.S. Paul Blasé, who retired in 02/40 after 8 patrols, having sunk some 35000 tons skippering a IIA. Then continued in the 2nd Flotilla as Ltn.Z.S. ? (can't remember his name yet & am away from my gaming computer ATM) who just started his 1st war patrol commanding a brand-new Type VIIB.

Yep, I let them retire now before they get sunk ;)

U-46, 2nd Flotilla
It's Feb 1940

I just left Belchen Supply Ship and I'm headed to NYC for a scenic tour before the American's become hostile. :P Having played SHIII for a long time, I've never once sailed to NYC lol. Bout time. The forums make a nice read while en route. :P

Since I'm at sea right now I can't get you total tonnage, but the patrol before I docked with the supply ship I had just sunk a Troop Transport. HMT something, for 40k odd tonnes. A few patrols back I ran into HMS [forgot] the battleship and sunk her too for a goodly amount as well. So I'm over 100k so far, but no idea on total.

Running GWX 2.1, OLC2 Uber, and Racerboy's SH4 Effects for SH3.

It's 0800, got partial clouds above, zero precipitation, and moderate visibility. I'm putting along at 10kts and looking forward to seeing the statue of Liberty. :)

Just into my fifth patrol (January, 1940) after spending two months twiddling my thumbs at base. My own fault for limping back into port after my last patrol with all my forward tubes destroyed, forward batteries destroyed and moderate damage to the deck gun, flak gun and conning tower. Some lucky ASW Trawler.

Still, even in that state I managed to stumble into the flank of a convoy near the fourth of firth which had only two escorts running front and back.
All I had to work with was my rear tube and my position yielded no better target than a small merchant. One measly merchant when there were Ore carriers and Large Merchants sailing by unmolested.

:damn:

Total tonnage for that patrol was still 20,000tons, which seems about the average haul for me.

OK, my commander Reinhard Pfiel started in 1939 at Wilhelmshaven in a Type IIA, and it is now June 8th, 1943 game time playing DiD. Most of that time was operating out of Lorient. Current flotilla is 11th in Bergen.

Current boat is a trick-out VIIC, with Alberich, Bold 2, Metox (which at this point isn't giving any indications of aircraft, wonder why?), FuMO-30 radar, Active sonar*, etc.

I'm anxiously waiting for the VIIC/41 to become available, and schnorkels. Although I may hold off, and install the Type XXIII in place of the XXI and play that in late 1944, if I survive that long.

*I know most people ignore it, but I've found it useful for getting ranges on lone merchants, especially in iffy visibility. You can *ALMOST* successfully target a ship without a visual sighting using it. Just don't use it if there are escorts about.

Currently on Patrol 6 (March 1940) in U45 (Type VIIB), 2nd Flotilla out of Wilhelmshaven. I can't give details of tonnage sunk to date in this career at the moment, but on this patrol so far I have sunk 37,000+GRT, which includes two medium cargo ships and two AMC's. Six torpedoes remaining and am just off the north coast of Scotland hoping to make it to DH77 (west of the Canary Islands) my assigned grid.

The two AMC's were a rare sight escorted by a loan destroyer. My soundman picked up the destroyer by chance when we were on the surface but were partially submerged due to rough seas. I submerged to periscope depth and picked up three warships. This looks interesting I thought and ordered silent running. Anyway, after a while I was able to spot the two AMC's through the attack scope at a distance of around 4,000 metres travelling at 17 knots. As the seas were rough and the escorting destroyer had passed in front of me already (he was way ahead of the AMC's travelling at 20 knots), I ordered ahead one-third to close the distance as much as possible. I managed to get within around 2,500 metres of the first AMC and fired two torpedoes set at slow, 2 metres depth with impact pistols. Within a minute or two the second AMC was in an ideal position for me to fire a further two torpedoes. I thought I had a good chance of hitting the first AMC but felt that the second AMC might be lucky and increase speed and zig-zag after my torps hit the first AMC which would alert him to my presence. On time my first two torps detonated against the hull of the first AMC disabling it immediately. A little later two more detonations were heard and the second AMC sailed on for a minute or two but then succumbed to the damage the two torps had inflicted.

I went down to 90 metres at ahead-slow while the destroyer doubled back in an attempt to locate me. Thankfully he didn't even get a sniff and I sneaked away. Some screenies below showing the death throes of the AMC's.

August 1943 in a Type IXB with most upgrades (except radar). I have sunk a total of about 1,700,000 GRT after 19 missions. The pickings are getting slimmer though, so I'm seriously considering leaving Lorient and ducking into a schnorkel VIIC-41 until the XXI comes along.

Having a field day west Gibraltar (minus a couple close scrapes with aircraft.)

To date; approx. 1,200,000 tons sunk with GWX2.1 100% realism and a complete inability to use the TDC.

Doing it WW1-style! Iron sights FTW!

21st patrol on a IXB, GWX2.1. Been in Brest since starting at 1940. 4 Patrol with 100k+. 9 GC's among my crew.

It's now may of 1944. Decide to spend a month visiting the coast off Cherburg, should be quite, the allied will probably invade Calais, but not until later in the year. Theywill rather see us fight it out with the Russians. Spend my renown (30k) on some homer torps just in case I got company in shallow water.

Later, this year, I may request a transfer to the baltic to fight the Russians with a VIIC/42. This quite cruise will surely give my crew some much needed R&R.

After a bout of chronic restartitis I finally settled on a new career which I hope to take long term.
Leutnant z. S. Karl Giebl, sailing out of Wilhelmshave in U-52, a Type VIIB.
Got the north of Scotland as our designated area, so we went up the British east coast and hung out for a day or so in what might be the most atrocious weather I've ever seen.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v736/thecatface/wave.jpg
This isn't the boat submerged. That's surfaced, with one of the waves coming over and pushing us down. I guess they're are a product of the seasonal waves I clicked in SH3Commander. The conning tower was spending half its time a meter or more below the surface.

After tiring of tormenting my watch crew I decided to give the rest of them some punsihment and gave an ALLARRRMMM crash dive.
And ploughed into the sea-bed at 70 meters.
Today we learned to check depth under keel before crash diving.
Frankly I think that incident alone would have been enough to demote me to cabin boy, but whatever; I struggled on, feeling pretty sheepish.
Luckily my pride was damaged more than the boat.

Since I was already playing the ignorant, houghtless oaf so well I decided to round things off by going down the Irish sea and back through Der Kanal. Not as suicidal in September '39 as the rest of the war apparently, because I got a haul of eight ships for 30,669 GRT - my best yet.
By the end I was sinking them with the deck gun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v736/thecatface/untitled36.jpg

Barely heard a squeak out of the Royal Navy. Picked up a lot on Hydrophones, but they never seemed to notice me. One destroyer came within visual range while we was sat on the surface in calm weather and good visibility, watching a large cargo sink. Didn't spot us, didn't ping us, didn't come anywhere near us. Somebody upstairs must like me.

And after all that I didn't even get a bloody medal.
Next time.

Dead, second patrol. Hull failed while hiding from a Black Swan at 260 meters.
Kind of pleased actually, as I'd been having suspicions that one of the mods I installed might have removed crush depths, since most of the Type VIIs I've had before all started to take damage around 230 meters, while my last two had done 240 - 250 just fine.
An anomaly, perhaps?

I only run decks awash in the Dover straits at night, as running deck awash makes me less visable (only tower above water) and at flank i can still do 14kts. As its early war i will run the straights as they are alot of targets around, some times it worth it.:yep:

Not in 1939 and early in the war.
It's relatively easy to cross in the chanel in this time and don't forget that is the shortest way to Atlantic...
For a type II it's very important.

Today I left and returned from my longest patrol ever which took 40 days, it was soooo long because while on middle of my patrol I received the msg from BDU ordering all north atlantic uboats to gather along the coast of Norway. At that time I was passing north from Scapa Flow to the west, so I changed course to north around Lerwick, btw sank a poor tramp steamer and was heading ESE to take position at western fiords of Norway. It took very soon to discover that I have arrived way too early, since invasion to Norway really began at 09/04/40.
So I had plenty of time ~15-20 days to do nothing and just wait :shifty:

Thanks to TC I've shortened this sit-and-wait period to 20 minutes and finally it started to happen :o . I've never seen before such intensive action in the North sea. And with GWX 2.1 mission orders mod it got way too immersive

Task forces from both German and British sides, other u-boats arriving to take part in action, any new "message received" message
rises the tension even more to it's peek, while continuosly thinking what will soon happen here

Almost constant heavy sea made actions slower, but I still managed to intercept one of the task forces moving 28 knots and sink the Renown class battleship!

Later few days I kept circling around NNW from Bergen.. but with failure to make any new contacts with enemy ships, ploted course back to Kiel since all of my crew felt washed-out after spending so much time in the sea..

The whole way home I kept receiving new messages with what is happening and knew I could continue battle since I had 7 torps left total, bit more then a half tank of disel, but couldn't help myself to whisk away the urge to fall in bed and take a looong pleasant rest..

So far sunk 2 sole merchants..about 2,000 tons each...so I think I'm mirroring a real-life patrol for a type IIa. I let a juicy one go on my way to the patrol sector. Fired 4 fish and decided to keep 1 for when I reach the sector..otherwise BDU wouldn't be happy...would be the second time I reach the sector with no fish. Bummer BasilY. But that's a very impressive tonnage total you've accumulated! :o And #28 sounds like a real doozy of a mission if you bagged two battleships in one cruise! I'll have to work hard to try and match that in my remaining years!:D

Thank you, that was all luck, the task force was passing streight in front of me. I am able to close to within 3000m stb going "ahead slow" with excelent angle at the battleships. The escorts, being where they are, did not detect me until the first impact. Then the 7 escorts dangle with me for 2 hours (real time), now that, is another type of fun entirely.

They are the first battleships I sunk in 4 careers. I saw Barham once in a previous career but fail to sink her.

The next patrol isn't as lucky though, the war ended for the crew of U-65 3 days ahead of schedule.

By the way, for tonnage, you can't go wrong with a type IX (despite my ealier reservations about underwater speed and survivability) off the US coast, as soon as you master the the art of evading/fighting DD's, you will be on your way to glory. I made my tonnage hitting the Caracas-New York route (tanker alley with deep water, a bit off the coast). Make full use of the milk cows when available.

In my current career in the Mediteranean, my entire patrol don't add up to what I got with 3~4 torps off Florida.:shifty:

Extract from Captain's log of HMS Ashanti (tribal class):

"After the fifth dc run a dull red glow was observed in the deep just off the port quarter. A large quantity of oill and a small amount of debris was observed on the surface. The debris recovered included human remains, personal effects, papers and pieces of wood panelling. We continued the sweep for another 20 minutes but there was no further ASDIC contact. Certain of the kill, we resumed course for Loch Ewe".

Flotilla Saltzwedel War Diary entry, November 12th, 1939:

It is with great sadness that we now have to assume the loss with all hands of U-6. Oblt. z S. Hans Zupp (crew of '35) and his men conducted three war patrols, one with Flotilla Weddigen and two with Flotilla Saltzwedel, sinking a total of 10 enemy merchant ships for a total 47,442 GRT.

The last message received from this boat was on 4th November, 1939, which read: "All torpedoes expended, sunk five for 21,275 GRT. Returning to base." The grid square given is just west of the Orkney Islands.

As the boat has not responded to repeated messages for status reports, we have to sadly conclude that U-6 was lost on or just after 4th November.

Bloody Tribals! Caught napping on the surface at dawn in only 37m of water! :damn:

I am currently into my second career, using the stock version of the game,on patrol 1 into grid EE65.Date is now 28.01.42.Boat is IXC sailing from lorient.

My first and very successful career ended after serving 20 patrols, with a total of almost half a million tonnes :arrgh!: .I was eventually sunk west of Ireland as I was heading out for my first patrol against the American east coast.Boat was heavily depth charged at about 200 metres by 2 or more Destroyers and was unable to hold boat's depth.Boat and crew crushed with all hands lost.I suspect improved allied radar was to blame. :nope:

Currently in Cuba - Puerto Rico channel. Sank three tankers (one large, one medium and one small) inside three hours. Hardly got enough time to reload the tubes! Crew exhausted but morale is sky-high.

Currently on 2nd career. Commander Heinrich Voss, first patrol 03/09/1939,
current date 04/12/1942, fitting out with new boat, type IXC/40. Total kills to date slightly over half a million tons, mostly C2s and the odd C3 and tanker thrown in. 2 passenger liners, one battleship and a Dido light cruiser. last patrol spent half the time with repair crews on deck filling in bullet holes from air attacks, then diving to avoid new air attacks collecting new holes, rinse and repeat.
Last patrol took me up to greenland in my old type VIIB U101. on the way back met a weird convoy consisting of a random cluster of 8 small and coastal merchants, a flower corvette, and a 24000 ton liner. Guess which one I sank? ;) Boat forced to dive without taking any of the ducklings by angry flower corvette. DC'd intermitantly for the next hour, finally surfaced again and realised I forgoten to make a contact report before the attack! :P Oh well.

Screwed up yet another career right after the successful one I wrote about the other day.

It was like this: As I said I decided to join the 30th/33rd Flotilla for a change, and went on my first war patrol from Constanza. The weather turned into c**p w/ zero visibility after two days and I bumped right into a destroyer 2 times in a row without seeing the buggers at all!!! I survived the 1st encounter just barely, but the 2nd one... BING-BANG-BOOM and that's all she wrote :nope:

MESSAGE BEGINS
---------------------
Obltn. z. S. Josef Schutz, 1st Frontflotille - Kiel, reporting in. My stalwart crew of U-47, "Poseidon's Wrath", has just completed our 12th patrol, February 28, 1941. Everyone is off for some well earned shore leave.

The hunting is getting tougher out there. Convoys are being protected by a greater number of escorts and some new destroyers are using side-launched depth charges in addition to the usual rear-drop racks. It makes it far more likely you'll be hit when you have six depth charges dropped in a wide horseshoe pattern. ASDIC is getting to be more precise as well.

Merchants are almost always heavily armed these days. Battling it out with the deck gun to sink a merchant will leave you with some significant damage if you're not careful in choosing your range and target.

The winter storms of the north Atlantic has made an even worse impact on our tonnage totals. These last two patrols tallied less than 20k tonnes. Our eels can't hit their targets with the way the oceans have been heaving and the constant storms makes visual spotting and the periscope nearly useless.

Hopefully, the next patrol will be more successful. We have a long layover for a major refit and repairs of my trusty Type VIIB (Installing GWX 2.1 and overhauling my mods).

Career Stats:
Total tonnage: 305,447 (40 Merchants -250,517 / 6 Warships - 54,930)

Highest medal awarded: Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds.
Given for the sinking of battleship "HMS Royal Oak" and cruiser "HMS California".

Crew Lost: 0

Regards,
Obltn. z. S. Josef Schutz

April 1944, U-525, 7th Flotilla.

Currently in BE39, heavily damaged from destroyer and aircraft attacks. Starboard electric motor destroyed, hull condition doesn't allow diving below 100m.
Aborting the voyage to designated grid (AN41) and will continue to patrol SW approaches until my fuel and torpedo reserves allow it, or until some further damage forces me to return to base.

Despite heavy defense by sea and air units, I sank 4 ships (25,000 tons).

In my previous patrols I sank 1,670,000 tons of Allied shipping.

Currently making preparations for my 2nd patrol. It's funny, but lately, with all that's going on, most of the time I'll start up the game and do something else while the patrol loads (Habit I picked up with 2.1's loooong loading times on my machine), by the time SH3 is loaded, often as not I'll have gotten wrapped up in something else, or we'll have to do/go whatever/somewhere. Makes advancing a career somewhat time-consuming.

LOL! Which career?? Between a new system. a new GWX3.0, a new LCD monitor...I've had several careers. My latest one is on patrol #3, out of Wilhelmshaven in a VIIB, should depart around 11/39. With all the changes, lately, I've gotten my butt kicked...and not necessarily by the DD's! I seem to have it "settled out", as far as SH3 goes.

ASUS touts there LCD's as having a "4:3" aspect ratio which is "easy"...don't you believe it! It's WAY more than a simple button push.

no, i play with everything on, except external views (which I rarely use) and map contacts.

Its because I sink everything I see that has a enemy flag on top of it, and don't return to base until every shell, bullet, and torpedo is gone (well if my fuel allows me, and depending on damage, If im damaged too bad, I RTB immediately.:yep:) The east cost of Britain is a great hunting ground, Dover is a nice harbor to raid (only once though) and Narvik has a nice battleship shaped reef now. (early war convoys are really fun, you can kill the destroyers with torpedoes, and finally deck gun/ use last torpedoes on the merchants, I destroyed 5 convoys in early war after sinking there destroyers.)

My guide to sinking convoys in early war.

Sink all destroyers-> run into convoy-> go up and down the rows blasting ships until they sink-> continue patrol, or RTB.

Speaking of careers, I've searched for the answer to my dilemma but alas no joy.

I'm at Wilhelmshaven so on my way through the passage just south of Dover, bang! the war has just broke out properly. What was a neutral area has now become enemy territory.

Yet, I'm being directed to sector BF - on the western side of England.

Is it safe to continue to use the southern route - or am I better off using the northern route around..what is it, oh yeah Scapa Flow?

Sanity says I abandon all hopes of using the southern pass and spend the extra time going north, but I just wandered what other Captain's do.

U-47 has just arrived north of Ireland after resupplying off Greenland after a rather boring 48 days out in the middle of the North Atlantic(Sinking only 3 smalls merchants,no convoys,no nothing.) I hope to find a convoy there. Wish me luck :arrgh!:

I'm on my 3rd ever career, just finished patrol 3 (2nd wartime) in my poor little Type-II. Patrols haven't been a huge success by some of your standards it seems, but I felt I did good for someone with only two dozen patrols (most in a Type-II) experience and doing full manual TDC shots (no notepad for me) and whatnot.

Plus its extra fun because I'm writing about this patrol on another forum I go to for some friends and they're enjoying it quite a bit.

Last patrol was quite fun, SC3GEN gave me orders to sneak into Kristiansands and reconnoiter it's facilities, which was quite harrowing as it was my first harbor infiltration, even if it was a neutral harbor. After that we cruised to our patrol grid in Zetland and then down the East coast of England where I learned that the 20mm flak can actually be somewhat useful for sinking small ships (I had figured everything above a sailboat would be too tough for a small AA gun).

Patrol ended on a bit of a downer, right near the entrence of the channel torpedoed a medium cargo with a magnetic just in front of the funnel during the night. Come the dawn it was still sailing along seemingly unaffected and my stuborness in following it had put us down to 25% battery and half 02. Made it out okay though, still that could've been another 5000 tones, how did it just shrug a hit off like that?

(Don't mind the 0.09% damage on the shakedown patrol, that was a... minor training accident during a crash dive drill...)

Not to much new stuff here, gotta think... give up u 45 and go to hunt off america (Starting to get close to then) or keep U 45 and stay on the western approaches.
