View Full Version : I guess the US Navy REALLY doesn't like it when you come back in a trashed sub!!

So, after one heck of a nasty patrol, sinking 2 enemy ships but having a very unpleasant encounter with a Jap aircraft who got the jump on me, its all ended on a bad note.

The USS Sailfish successfully returned to base after what I would consider a successfull patrol. yes, the boat is totally wrecked with a massive gash in the side, but two enemy ships were successfully sunk AND I got my crew and boat home despite its very poor state. I was hoping for a nice medal when I limped her back into port at 3 knots, fuel bunkers emtpy. i think I was leaking fuel, as running at 7 knots i was using up a HELL of alot :shifty: and a medal I got indeed, a Purple Heart for some bizarre reason, and a real earbashing from the base Admiral telling me I need to take it easy....pffft we're at war you idiot!!!! Then I was relieved of my command and transferred to his staff. Sitting out the rest of the war!!!! :nope:

I guess they don't like you wrecking their shiny submarines. :smug:

Take a look at this boat, she's well and truely holed from that Jap plane.

Wow...I don't think I've ever seen a boat that badly damaged and still able to limp back. I never engage Aircraft unless I pop up and there right on top of me.

Hah yeah that's nice damage!

I guess giving you a promotion turned out to be a lot cheaper than fixing your boat :)

If you return with a boat thats damaged beyond repair then this will lower your renown. If you don't have enough renown you're out.;)

I once sank a heavy cruiser (my first cruiser at all:D) and then got hit by one of my own torpedoes that made a circular run. After returning home with a big hole (not as big as yours but still impressive) I was given command of a new submarine together with a message that my renown was lowered.....:hmm:

Should be grateful though since a direct torpedo hit should actually result in the loss of the sub or at least in a decimated crew. All I had where a few light injuries.

I never knew that...that is interesting...so If I want to keep my job I have to conserve my renown points or sneak into records and fiddle the account.

Not at all unlike the corporate world...:shifty: ...I should be at flag rank afore this war's end...

BTW...how in the world did you make it back in that sub? Good job! I've had far less damage and the sub will simply sit on the surface and refuse to start engines even after all damage is repaired.:nope: Exasperating!

It was challenging to say the least, the hull was so badly damaged that diving even down to 70 odd feet caused more damage to the boat, so I had to remain surfaced the entire time. And, along the way I had a few close calls with other japanese aircraft but thankfully they never saw me and carried on flying the other way.

Oh, I also neglected to state I ran aground outside Java too, nearly destroying the boat S: . I was able to reverse backwards, and get around the island. lol.

Though I was very dissapointed to be relieved of command. I considered it a job damn well done getting my boat and crew home given its superior wrecked state. lol

Absolutly. I'd think more of any captain who was all about returning me in one piece, not their (US Navy) precious submarine.

Congrats on making it safely home Cap'n! :know:

I've had my rear end spanked about 3 times by different admirals because I returned home with the sub having 80-90 hull damage BUT so far they've always offered me a new sub to command.

How do I achieved this great endeavour? Go mani-i-mano with a frigate/corvette and find out who sinks 1st. :smug:

You got sacked for going aground, only explanation.

Congrats on a damn fine job getting the crew home. Now don't damage your desk!:rotfl:

ddiplock,

Did u say it was one of your own torps that did it? .....maybe that's why the brass wasn't happy!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

This is OT but:
@ddiplock
I see that you don't have an SJ-radar. I once noticed that I could not mount one myself anymore after recieving the conning-tower upgrade (Porpoise-class). Did you have the same problem?

@Vorkapitan
I said that I was hit by my own torpedo.:D

It was a first patrol, in Jan 1942 so I didn't have the ability for SJ radar yet. How does the conning tower upgrade work? Do you just get told when you get back to base your getting a new tower on your tub?

Cheers :)

Yep, nothing you can do against it. You just get the message that you got a new tower. After that I had to purchase my radars again and found out that the SJ was not working/installed in the first place.:o
It was shown on the sub configuration screen but did neither appear on the sub itself nor could it be switched on.:hmm:

It is quite a while ago since this happened to me and I've installed plenty of mods since, so maybe the problem has been solved already.
I was just curious whether I was the only guy having encountered that problem.

This is the same American military who nuked its own troops testing the A bomb radiation. Trust me, they care more about their "stuff" than the people. I don't care what the propaganda says.

Hahaha :)

I've started a new career and its early days, but I'm being so annoyed by being denied some great kills by faulty bloody torpedos. I had a 13,500 ton Large European liner in my scope yesterday clipping along at 16 knots, fired off 4 fish into her.

First 2 fish ran deep and under-ran the target, 3rd fish was a dud, and the 4th impacted successfully. only ONE out of the 4 fired worked. Needless to say, the guy headed away and I gave up the attack.

Bloody torpedos!!!:damn:

I was about to say the same thing. The fact that you took that much damage and still lived to tell the tale is pretty significant.

BTW, just looking at the size of the hole, in RL, wouldn't that have actually finished that boat?

Yep, I think that should have been enough for a real sub.:dead:

Just returned with 87% hull damage after messing with four escorts on the surface in blinding rain off La Perouse Strait (thought I could get away with it- NOT!!!!!!!!!). Admiral was a bit annoyed about writing off one sub, but gave me a new one because of my record. Off to what will probably be my final mission (it's July 13th 1945), in a Tench class no less.
Started off in Perch in Asiatic Fleet, offered a new sub several times, turned down the offer initially but eventually accepted a Balao. What a mistake that was- transferred from Fremantle to Pearl, should have stuck with my old hunting ground: no long outward and return legs.
