Hey guys,

As my post number attest to, I'm the stub , I mean Nub here. I haven't played SH4 yet much at all as I want to try to complete a full career in SH3. But as I was looking in the manual I noticed that they are missing a few of the American Submarines in the game. Now let me state that I realize that they cannot model every submarine and sub class variant; but it looks to me that they left out a major submarine class that participated in many events during the early months of WWII in the Pacific. During the first half of the Pacific war if my memory serves me correctly they were just starting with the fleet boat concept. But before they were able to implement that concept to a useful degree they had a class of Submarine that was designed to be a lone wolf that was capable of engaging lightly armed warships and merchants in surface battle.

The sub class I speak about is the Narwhal class. It was the largest Submarine during the first part of the war and carried (if memory serves me correctly) two six inch deck guns (one fore and aft) . it also had four forward firing tubes and two rear firing tubes and had a very good endurance and was known for it's ability to take damage. From what I have read it was later removed from front line service; but continued to see action throughout the war.

Here's a few pics....

This is what http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/misc/ships/sub.htm has to say about this one of the most famous of it's ships which operated until 1945 in the Pacific Fleet, the USS Nautilus). This just a brief overview of the class and I know many other sites beside this modeling site; but I use it because I gives just a brief explanation of the ship class and one ship in particular, The USS Nautilus.

USS Nautilus (SS-168), 1930-1945.
Formerly named V-6 (SC-2)

USS Nautilus, a 2730-ton Narwhal class cruiser submarine, was built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California. Commissioned in July 1930 as USS V-6 (SC-2), she was renamed Nautilus in February 1931 and redesignated SS-168 in July 1931. Prior to World War II, she was mainly operated in the Pacific, based at Pearl Harbor and at San Diego. Modernized between July 1941 and April 1942, her first war patrol included intense involvement in the Battle of Midway, during which she attacked a Japanese aircraft carrier that was at that time identified as Soryu but was more probably Kaga. Later during that patrol, while off Japan, she sank the destroyer Yamakaze.
Nautilus then began an active career as a transport submarine, a role for which her large size made her especially useful. She landed Marines to raid Makin Island, in the Gilbert Islands in August 1942; put scouts ashore at Attu, in the Aleutians, in May 1943; again landed Marines in the Gilberts in November 1943 and carried out several missions into the Philippines area in May 1944 - January 1945. During this time Nautilus also conducted anti-shipping and reconnaissance patrols off Japan, in the Central Pacific and in the Solomons area, sinking and damaging several Japanese ships. Ordered home after her 14th war patrol, she arrived at Philadephia, Pennsylvania, in May 1945 and was decommissioned the following month. Nautilus was sold for scrapping in November 1945.

I think the SH4 team sort of missed the boat by excluding this ship.

Thanks guys and take care.

You are in luck. There was another member who thought the same thing. Ducimus created to the best of his ability, the Narwhal. Two cannons, etc. You can find it in the Trigger Maru thread in the SH4 mods workshop. However, I do not believe you can download it separately. You would have to install the entire mod. Not that it is an issue. Trigger Maru has gotten nothing but praise for a great mod. You get an added bonus of great content and game play.
