View Full Version : OLC GUI + GWX2.1 issues
Hello fellow Kaleuns
Some problems I am having with the OLC GUI in GWX2.1:
-I really liked that bearing ring around the boat in GWX. the latest GUI (I think) takes that away. I find it almost impossibly difficult to get a decent plot on the chart on my targets. Will it be possible to install that tool as a separate mod on top of the whole package I have installed now?
-Accurately plotting your target requires your own heading + target bearing + target distance + target angle on bow to determine his course. But the only way to determine angle on bow and distance is through the attack scope which is zoomed out way to far to get any decent readings at distances over 3 kilometers. Combined with the fact that on the surface during the day, you have to stay well away from them to avoid being spotted... I can't get them plotted at all. The watch officer is no use if there are other ships around. (example: in the torpedo training mission I am having great trouble with even the simple task of drawing the general path of the various ships as they all sail away in different directions) Is that realistic? How do you guys handle this? Am I completely missing something here?
Thanks
Btw well done OLC, loving the look and feel of it so far, even if I'm unable to use the interface at long ranges ;)

To get my own bearing and position on the map i plot a course which is about the current bearing of my boat and after aligning i cut the engines and start doing the measurements. If im not in a hurry i try to calculate the relative course to me just by checking the profile of the target and plot an approximate course parallel to the target.
After the boat turned into my plotted course i start using the WA to get the pretty exact targetpostions from time to time until i get enough marks on the map to plot its course described in the tutorial. It's pretty tough in brought daylight to stay right out of the targets visible range but still close enough to get infos from the WA so i rather increase the distance again after each distance/bearing msg so i still can see the target but the WA and the watch on the target cant and after a while i move in again for another measurement.
Finally i put myself no more the 1000m away (i prefer 600-700) from the projected targetcourse in an 90 degree angle with scope down. Then i set the tdc to the calculated targetspeed, set distance to 1000m and the AOB between 35 and 45 depending on the target. As soon as the target bow pass right in front of me i raise the scope, lock on and fire torp(s), and lower it again. Sometimes i dont even raise the scope for locking, i just make sure the scope bearing in the tdc is accurate but that requires a lot of practice relying on the attackmap only to get a fix of the passing target in time.
Above procedure works without visible contact just with the help of the sonarguy as well though the chance is lower to get an acurrate course of the target so i end up sometimes to far or to close to the target. If i cannot adjust it by maneuvring in a better possition i have to use the OL2 special to to take the shot asap before it is spotting my scope and start zigzagging with variating speed.
If there are warships equipped with radar dont even think about to stay surfaced figuring his course out. Do it all by hydro and periscope at long distance with full stop or silent running. Let the target or convoy move out of detection range, and run surfaced to the calculated attackposition (if possible calculate it so the convoy runs above u at night time).
Ok, i like the OLCE2 but I am not happy with the GUI,
I can get my old GXW2.1 interface back but keep all the nice environments by simply taking away the GUI in jsgme, yes?
And is there a way to have the attack disc ingame after all? will one of the U-jagd mods put that disc ingame or something? or will that make a mess of my GWX interface?
thanks

Do you mean the compass around the boat in the map view, if so then, yes, you can put it back and add whatever tools you want.

thanksIt's allready in the OLC Gui's (also Special)! Well, the compass side anyway. Look for a small button at the bottom middle of the TDC dial panel. Watch the long movie again because there are some quirks with it and remembering the TDC settings.
It's very simple to convert a reported bearing to a true bearing for plotting the positions on the map with the line tool. Once the attackdisc is shown, align the long slender pointer (not connected to the AOB disk) to the reported bearing on the brown scale. Read off the true bearing (on that side of the center) on the most inner yellow scale. Then start a line from your uboot on the map to that angle (with the inverted compass scale) and extend until the range. Repeat the proces to get further position plots and figure out AOB. Manual plotting isn't so hard with the right tools. :)
what i am looking for is a combination of the two, though i doubt that is possible:
the tdc settings available from the periscope view (very nice tool) but the plotting and navigation chart stuff from GWX 2.1, with the addition of the attack disc as an ingame function, to aid with target plotting
does that sound intelligable?
never mind, I have it all sorted out
GWX2.1
OLCE2
U-Jagd 1.3.1 for GWX
Open hatches on all boats
Camera mod for SH3
some minor other additions like lifeboats, torpedo damage, skins, mission orders
Currently very very happy, walking through my beautiful boat and putting torpedoes exactly where I aim them.
To those concerned: thank you very very much for the excellent work on the mods. It has turned this into the best game ever, hands down.
just wanted to get that off my chest. kind regards,
Bosje
edit: 1 small issue, I can't seem to find the heavy flak gun on my type IXC. it's not on the boat and it's not on the upgrade screen in Lorient. Steeds IXC skin possibly the culprit here?

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/images/icons/icon10.gif wait until u have contact with a juicy large convoy escorted by mandatory escorts and 1 or 2 light cruisers stomping through a winterstorm let u bounce from +1m to -20m where u even have to almost fully raise ure scope surfaced to see more then just huge waves rolling over ure boat to be able to use the tool and get a descend hit. Last time it took me about 6 hrs, 1 pot of black coffee, 2 packs of smokes and the souls of the crew to down a couple of them without being blown up.
