View Full Version : Sunk......but why?

The glorious career of Oberleutnant z. S. M. Anderson, commanding the VIIB U-48 came to end on April 13, 1940 in Vestfjiord outside of Narvik. The boat was lost with all hands. (The brothels in Wilhelmshaven will fly there panties at half mast in honor of her gallant crew.)

I keep wondering, how?

I just sank the HMS Nelson(my first battleship- ), escorted by 9 destroyers. I crash dived after a destroyer spotted my periscope(too busy rubbernecking the sinking and hoping to maybe even the odds a little bit by taking a destroyer out as well) and hit me with gunfire. I had minor damage to the conning tower, no flooding that I could see. I passed 80 meters and kept going. I put on speed to try to arrest the descent but unfortuneately, I had to go pick up the kids from day care and I had to save-I know...saving submerged, near land, with other ships nearby is supposedly taboo, but I've never had any problems before.

Yesterday, I come home from work and have some time to play a little bit and am looking forward to trying to evade 9 pissed destroyers and figure out why I keep going down past my ordered depth.
I load up, the control room opens up showing a very steep angle, lights flashing, explosions, and reports of damage, men on deck and what not and then the death screen. The depth meter showed about 110m and I had at least another 100m below keel.

WTF.

I just keep wondering what happened. It went from a seemingly under control, albeit tense, situation to the death screen and the commanders white cap floating to the surface.
There didn't seem to be any destroyers nearby dropping DC's at the time of the save, but I have a feeling that is exactly what happened and I just got caught in a bad DC pattern. Just plain bad timing I guess.

I kinda wonder if it was changing the depth after ordering a crash dive. I've heard stories that is not a good thing to do, but I guess I'll just never know exactly what happened.

Oh well. Dead is dead. :dead:

On a good note, I was awarded the Oak Leaves to my Knights Cross. Unfortuneately, it was posthumously.

A new Kaleun has joined the ranks in U-36 in May of 1940. He his currently on his first patrol near Dunkirk in water that is waaaaay to shallow for his liking.

Probably the save under those circumstances that did it. Happens to everyone in this game you know :dead:

saving under water with ships about is not supposedly taboo

it IS taboo

if you do it... even once... you will likley reap the consequences.

its always better to just pause the game.

I'm thinking also the save game was messed up from being submerged. I've never heard of a submerged save being playable.

Too bad, sounds like you were in for an interesting time.

Dito. But I try to always save surfaced when nobody is around.

I wouldn't count that as being dead. I also don't count friendly ships running over me in port in broad daylight while I am afk as dead. I'm also thinking of not counting aircraft killing me while I am cruising submerged with nothing protruding above the surface. It seems to happen a bit too often to be probable.

 DOH!!

As far as saving while submerged...I do it a lot and have never had a problem on reloads before. I try to save on the surface as much as possible but sometimes life gets in the way.

I think a destroyer just got close and I didn't hear it and smacked me.

I'm not sure to have a good understand of the initial question but it seems you don't know exactly why you died ?

This question still often without answer in many case of mine.
But finally, yesterday exactly, I understand.
Integrity hull !
Watch very often your integrity hull because sometime you are not damaged, don't need works from de security crew, but the integrity hull is down !

To tell you for example, yesterday I was often under air-attack.
Everytime I shot down the planes and save the ship but also everytime bombs exploded in the water very near me.
"Das boot is geshaft" but no works from security crew...
And like this, integrity hull decrease sweetly, first attack 82%, next time 73%, 65%, 49%...
Getting time to back home...

Finally, when I was forced to escape in the deep, at only 100 meters sudently integrity shot down at 6% !!
Just enought time to take a screenshot and after...RIP.

Hope to helped you.

Maybe they mistook my sub for yours. The Brits seem like they're really irate at you and your tea cozys.
I know no tea cozys floated to the surface after they got me, so they may still be looking for you. :D

I am playing with GWX2.1 and SH3 Commander and I've selected the option of not displaying my hull integrity, so I have no idea what it was after they hit my conning tower.
It may have been low after they hit me and getting down to about 110m may have crushed my hull like a egg.
I guess I'll just never know. I'm still not convinced it was saving while submerged though.
:)

I can't read French, but that picture of yours says a thousand words.

You are a strong Kaleun and you know the same feeling as real situation !
It must be absolutly terrific !

If I keep this option 'on' it's just 'cause I still learning the game and its reactions.
I know, it's a chance that they did not before their big jump into the depths...

Thank you, that's enjoye me.

i make a point of sinking that nelson class in the narvik fjord in every career i start, lol

failsafe way to stay alive: dont mess up the hull beforehand and hang low at 200 meters: depthcharges and / or asdic can't reach there in that stage of the war. never got killed by those 9 bad boys

The Nelson came as somewhat of a shock. I was expecting to see the Warspite.
Wasn't she the historical ship that sailed up the fjiord to Narvik on 4/13/40 to give the German destroyers such a hard time after they were decimated by the British destroyers on the 10th?

That is correct...if your playing GWX2.1, you have options:
