View Full Version : Great hunting in Florida

I followed the advice today which someone posted here, can't recall his name though. He said there is a great hunting-ground at the Strait of Florida (the wide channel just below Florida).
Thought I'd take a look, see if it's worth it...

....and WOW!

This place is tanker-heaven! All the large tankers pass through here, either unescorted or escorted by a larger tanker :D
I just passed some bad weather, which further increases the fun. Now it's just one hit on the stern and let the waves do the rest

So far I've bagged 106k tons, with 10 more torps to spend. I can advice every depressed person to spend a few weeks here. You'll feel better instantly after seeing the rediculous amount of tankers passing through here!

I've been here for 3 weeks now, and so far encountered just 1 Catalina (which missed) and 1 torpedo boat.
Most tankers I saw had few defensive armamant, so come 'on over!

EDIT: It was Predavolk who suggested it. Here's the link:

My IXB and I are back off the African coast, but I'm happy to hear you've been able to share in the GLORIOUS hunting off Florida! It looks like you're also going to smash my total of ~110K if you have another ten torps left! :o

If you're bored next, try the North entrance to Trinidad. I found it to be even thicker with tankers, although more heavily patrolled. And you will repeatedly have to resist the urge to sink stupid Venezualen tankers who sail around in those convoys of tankers guarded by bigger tankers. :nope:

Here's another sweet spot in the carib, ED44 > 46 nothern half of grid. I also came accross a convoy of ALL tankers, but HEAVILY guarded. 1943.

That is great news
I'm close to the carribbean right now, so it's time to tell the crew that we're going on hunting vacations in Florida, they're gonna love it.
Thanks:up:

Looks like I need to trade my VIIC in for a IXC and away to go.

I had some bad weather, so I had to use the sonarman alot! Needless to say, I missed a few eels, but the total wasn't bad, thank you again for the tip

Of the 15 merchants sunk, practically ALL were tankers

As soon as i've completed my patrol to New York coast, I'll be taking U-501 down to Florida for a hunting vacation.

I said it before and I'll say it again.

Why go all the way to America or Africa to shink ships when there are plenty of them right next to England? I mean, it's right there!

I'll pass on the nearly month-long voyages. My average patrols out of Lorient are 3-5 days. 1 day to get to BF15, 1-3 days waiting for convoy, 1 day getting back.
I don't sink 137,000 tons or whatever but I can do 2 or 3 patrols in the time it takes Paukenschlag boats to do 1. So there

Too right, mate! I'll bag the escorts and you take it to the merchies! But you're on your own when it comes to those French fraulines. No pack tactics

Oh well, we all have our habits and hunting grounds, what's wrong with sailing a few more miles to reach them?

Hey, you should write it up in my 100K club thread! Share the tactics, especially tricky bad-weather tactics.

I'll give it a look Predavolk, this would be the first time I'm asked for tactics :smug:

Bad weather actually makes the hunting more profitable (if you hit the ships that is ). Due to high waves, one torpedo at the stern or bow is usually enough to sink the bigger tankers. I still send two eels towards large tankers though!

Thank you again for the advice to go there :D

Hehe, you might as well leave the sunscreen at home, I've had nothing but bad weather and fog!
