Francesco Chiarello, one of the last World War I veterans, died June 27th at his home in Italy at the age of 109.

The happy news is that Fernand Goux, age 108, has come forward for France, stating that he fought in World War I for the French (meaning that Lazare Ponticelli was not in fact the last French veteran of the Great War).

That would make him, what 14 when the war started, 18 when it ended? Young but within the realm of possibility i suppose.

It reminds me of the time i met a civil war "veteran" back when i was a kid. The guy was ancient and certainly talked the talk but later on we worked it out and figured he was about 6 when the war ended. Kinda young, even for a drummer boy.

Yet - young. They always lied about their age back then.

But Wikipedia and the Internet wasn't available to us back in the 1960's unfortunately...
