When I start up the game my mouse pointer becomes slightly delayed but not nearly enough to effect funtionality, and when i go through the menus it behaves the same way. When I start actuall gameplay the mouse becomes much more slow and jerky almost like it has a very low fps. It is not too bad at stations without 3D rendering like the navigation station, but it becomes worse at 3d stations like the bridge. I have set the video settings to low, which helps a bit, and have turned vertical sync on because it has fixed this problem for other people. While this helps, the mouse is still quite slow and is affecting gameplay.
My Computer:
HP Pavillion dv9700t notebook
Windows Vista Home Premium - 64-bit
17" LCD - 1680x1050
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.4 ghz dual-core)
4.0 gb 667mhz RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8600m GS - 512mb
two 120gb 7,200 rpm hitachti HD's
This computer it up to date and has all up to date drivers. (tried re-installing drivers and that didn't help) It is only 2 months old and most of the selections were the top available from HP's website. In my opinion this computer should be able to handle SH4 fine. I don't have any idea whats causing this.

in my experience the mouse cursor goes unresponsive and jerky when other processes start taking up lots of time on the hard drive bus. this happens for example when my gf starts copying large amounts of data from my box over the network.
So, shut down your shares or tell them to stay off your box when you are playing. Or it might be worse, you might have something called malware or a virus that's causing this sort of symptoms.

GeForce 8600m GS can't handle such big resolutions (1680*1050). Try the 1280*800 resolution instead, which has 58% less pixels (you must restart the game after you select a new resolution). Only cards like 8800GT can really handle resolutions like 1680*1050.
Also, press Ctrl+F8 to see the FPS and set the game so you get at least 20 FPS in all situations.
PS: only check vertical sync when you're doing over 60 FPS!
Also, try this: set your graphic options in the game to custom, not low. Uncheck all boxes in the left column and check all the boxes in the right column EXCEPT vsync. Leave the sliders where they default, but if the above doesn't completly fix your problem, experiment with them.
I have much less of a rig than you and the game runs fine and looks gorgeous with this setup. I use 1180 by 960 or there abouts for resolution--don't remember exactly.

Thanks for the help, I will look into adjusting the setting in the way that banjo described and I am also running the game in 1280 x 800, it does help but I am still bothered. I am just confused as to why this is happenening because I would've thought that a 512mb video card, 2.4ghz dual core, and 4 gig ram would be able to handle the game fine... apparently I am just pushing it a little too hard though...
also I don't have my computer on a server or anything like that and I am not concerned about viruses or malware (I have very good security on my computer)
The only thing I am a little bit suspicious of is I have Vista 64bit. Does anyone know if playing SH4 in 64bit Vista has any negative reprecussions?

You have to understand that 8600m GS, although is one of the fastest mobile video cards, is not that powerful when compared to a desktop card.
As it says here (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=131334), an 8600mGS scores 3160 in 3D Mark 2006 (1280*800) while a desktop 8800GT will score over 12000 in 1280*1024 (which has 28% more pixels than 1280*800).
Still, the 3160 score should be enough to have a good SH4 experience with settings on high at 1280*800. The FPS should never go below 20-25.
I had a 7800GS that I overclocked and it scored 3300 and did very well in SH4 (1280*960, settings on high).
So, while you're card may not handle high resolutions (1680*1050), it should handle very well a high TimeCompression (way better than my single core CPU).

Thanks for the help guys. I now can see the difference in my video card. I wish there was a safe way to overclock stuff with a notebook, but unfortunately there is not, as far as I know. I am getting a more enjoyable gaming experience now with the resolution change, the mouse pointer dosen't perform quite as well as it would when doing regular tasks in windows.
one more question: Is there anyway I can do away with the "stylized" mouse pointer in SH4, and if I could, would it make rendering the pointer easier and therefore speed it up?
