Random shootings

Attacked a convoy, got one sunk and damaged another, then something strange happened. I noticed one of the escorts was doing circles like they usually do, but was randomly firing its main guns. At first I thought it was firing off DCs, but after zooming in closer, I confirmed it was the main guns. I never saw Allied DDs do this in SH3. Is this something strange within the game or some Japanese tactic peculiar to the Pacific War?

Occasionally they will fire star shells, even in the middle of the day.

Definitely not as I was using F11 to have a look around. Maybe it was SSs as JC suggested, but I can't remember noticing the area looking any brighter, hopefully it'll happen again and I'll take notes next time.
