Hello Everyone,

Im reasonably new to SH3 (vanilla version) and am enjoying it immensely, and thought I might introduce myself.

After 10 succesful patrols I think Im getting the hang on things, and my crew has itself a nice brace of medals (incl. one 'fried egg'). Im still only playing at 30% realism, and have yet to tackle manual torpedo targetting, but love the challenges in the game. Currently, Im stationed out of Nazaire in 1941 (I think), driving a VIIB with updated engine, hydrophone and batteries. So far, so good...Albion shall pay dearly for her sins!

I have a few questions, that I couldn't find answered elsewhere in the forums (or perhpas I haven't searched well enough), and was wondering wherther anyone could help:

Gramaphone
I found and downloaded some 1940's radio songs in .OGG format, and placed them in my C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Sound\Gramophon e folder. Unfortunately, they will not play, and I suspect that this is because they should be MP3 format. Is that correct? If so, are there any MP3 versions for download that someone could point me to?

Boat and Torpedo Updates
After every patrol, I find that I do not get an option to upgrade my boat (apart from the VIIC) or torpedos, and wonder if thats because Im still operating out of 1941. Do I need to progress through to the middle 1940's to be eligible for updated boats and torpedo's?

Many thanks all. See you in the Wolf Pack!

If not, there are good converters out there. www.goldwave.com (http://www.goldwave.com) is one. HOWEVER, the fact is that .ogg files actually play better on the gramaphone than MP3s. MP3s tend to skip. Something else must be wrong.

.wave files also play well, but they are much larger.

The update question I can't help you with, but someone will soon be along who can.

Sailor Steve is right about the .ogg format playing better in the gramaphone. The upgrades become available as the war progresses but, you must have enough renoun available to buy them.

Thanks for the great welcome fellow Kaleuns!

Thanks for the boat and torpedo upgrade infromation...and I will definately try GWX someday soon.

With respect to the gramaphone...it seems my 'radio operator' forgot to unzip the files appropriately, and once I did that everything worked fine. I can now boost crew morale with some relaxing music. The radio operator got 3 days servicing the bilge pumps for his oversight!

Just returned to port this evening after a weeks worth of attrocious weather - rain, high seas and heavy fog for 5 days and nights! Only saw one destroyer (on its own?) when we nearly had a head-on collision coming out of very thick fog somewhere in Grid AK. We both went hard to starboard (he with cannons blazing and me ordering a crash dive) and we almost scraped port bows, no serious damage done but I dove to 160m and scampered home when I realised lining up some shots in high seas and thick fog was near impossible. BdU thinks Im a coward, but at least I live to fight another day :arrgh!:

Dud Out.

Watch Das Boot again. Der Alte's crew thought he was crazy for attempting just such an attack. Your crew probably breathed a sigh of relief when you didn't. As for BdU, well, if your crew is with you, who's gonna tell 'em?

Thanks again for the warm welcome - very decent of you.

Well my latest patrol is at this stage rather hairy: After losing a crew member (sadly not Bernard) to several attacking Sunderlands (of which 3 were downed) I've dived to 90 with only 14m or so under keel to spare and am being pursued by said Sunderlands and a lone Destroyer. Hopefully I can get out to live another day. Hold thumbs for me - Im stuck in a somewhat shallow channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland (the grid name eludes me; AM68 possibly?).

Some Sunderlands calling in the Destroyer for help:

Looking at the distance between the destroyer and yourself, and presuming you still have an eel or two left........continue heading away at slow ahead whilst reloading your tubes, then rise to PD and sink the basum if he continues to pester you.

The planes should fly off after a few passes.
