I went to a sight that has this game for download. I guess I got jipped because I payed 5 bucks and it will not download. I was wondering if anyone plays this still and what they think of it.
Still an excellent sim, although a different implementation than the Jane's series. Probably far fewer people still playing, but I find it still engaging and worthwhile.

Yes. I've installed a couple of times on two different XP machines.
Good luck!
Still enjoying Fast Attack on my machine although I use DosBox to run it. Be sure to grab the patch and tutorial located on Subsim's download page.

I never played this one, what was it about? I know it is about modern subs, but did it have a storyline?

Fast Attack was my first ever sub game, I played this for many months. Loved it! If i can remember correctly some missions had a 2 hour limit which did not ruin the game play & when you fired missile a video would come up showing you the missile heading for its target, nothing unusual these days in games but back then it was a big thing for me. Learning to find targets on the sonar was easy which i think was intentional i was a pro at this game and thought i could handle any modern subsim. How wrong was I. Later on i tried out Sub Command Eeek! totally had to learn the sonar from scratch again. :)

This is wild! Just happen to be crusing forums and run across this. Listen:
I have been playing Fast Attack everyday for the last two months. After downlding it from one those free dos game sites, I was so taken, I ordered the game CD from ebay. And nothing's been the same.
Let me put it like this. Here is a partial list of the sub games I have:
Silent Hunter I. II, III, (Wolves) IV
Enigma Rising Tide
Sub Command
Dangerous Waters
688 Attack Sub
5th Fleet
Harpoon
Silent Steel (movie game)
Aces of the Deep
Destroyer Command
Wolf Pack
Steel Tide
etc., etc.
No game, I repeat, none, nada, makes me feel like a real sub driver like Fast Attack. Now, c'mon, I know that what you like is subjective, but as you can see I aint no casual player...I eat, sleep and dream submarines! And, bar none, nothing comes even close to what I consider what it would be like than Fast Attack (well, maybe Enigma. But I classify that as a sub-shoot 'em up, not an actual sim).
Funny, with all the modern bells-and-whistle games in my collection, it's a dos, back-in-the day game that I most enjoy. Go figure.
Is this game actually "abandonware" available to download?

The term abandonware is hard to define, in regards to the original copyright owners' wishes, etc. But as far as I know, Fast Attack is not available for sale anywhere. So, check e-bay or Google it, it is a good game and worth finding.
None of the abandonware sites that I know of carry it so I resorted to buying it online. Think I got my copy off of eBay.

Well I got my Fast Attack CD at my local store for some $3. :D
I know it must run under dosbox but when I install the game can't get the .exe file :damn:
May be someone knows what am I doing wrong..some help will be great
Thx a lot
What is in your (very small) installed "fast" directory?
To make mine work, I installed Fast Attack using dos box, as well as using it to run the sim.
TO INSTALL:
mount c c:\mydosbox (or whatever folder name you want to use)
mount d d\: -t cdrom (or whatever the letter is for your cd/dvd drive)
d:
install
TO RUN: This assumes you have made an image of your original disk, and mounted it! Use whatever drive letter you have mounted your FA image on - mine was "m". So running it is a little more complex than some dos games.
A bat file that only mounts your directory above the Fast Attack installation should work just fine. Here are the contents of my bat file:
dosbox.exe C:\mydosbox fast.exe -c "MOUNT m m:\ -t cdrom" -fullscreen
From the resulting dosbox "c:" prompt:
cd sierra\fast
fast
You would alter the path for your own install and directories. Mine is "mydosbox\Sierra\fast" Note that this bat fails to execute the fast.exe command for reasons unknown to me. The bat file is in the dosbox main directory, wherever you installed it. So you would manually launch from your prompt.

Thats the point Eugene, I have to install using dosbox
Thanks a lot

Hi, Probably out of my league here, Just looking around Subsim site while waiting reply from classic sub posts and noticed your post:-

dosbox.exe C:\mydosbox fast.exe -c "MOUNT m m:\ -t cdrom" -fullscreen
I have Silent Hunter original by SSI loaded through Dosbox and although everthing says it's running in Fullscreen, It's in the middle of the screen with a large black box around it and not really playable at that setting.
I Loaded SH through dosbox version 0.73 would this solve the problem.
Many thanks
paul
The easiest thing to be "wrong" and to fix is if this is a simple resolution thing that happens in dosbox with some old games. Try changing the resolution selections in dosbox, starting with original, then the lowest (320 or something similar), 680x400, etc. I think you are running in a higher resolution than will fill the screen, and lowering it should do the trick as long as you have the sim running, just too small.

HI, thanks for your help, now working properly, although a bit sluggish.
One more question if you don't mind, can I set a resolution thats not in the normal windows list i.e. something between 640X480 and 800X600 or between 800X600 and 1024X768.
Thanks again

Fast attack is and was my fav sub game. I had played Janes 688i and Sub Command but FA is by far the best. I go as high as Rear Admiral completing the campaigns.
Recently i installed Linux and installed dosbox on it. I was surprise to see it working again :salute:
However, i realised that the /Anim folder is corrupted and it takes indefinite long time to read. I decide to copy anim files to harddisk and the following is what i managed before i got read error:
swslogo.smk
torpfly2.smk
torpload.smk
torp_l1.smk
torp_l4.smk
torp_l5.smk
torp_r1.smk
torp_r2.smk
torp_r6.smk
opnmovie.smk
hrpnfly2.smk
hrpnout1.smk
encap_l1.smk
encap_l7.smk
encap_l8.smk
encap_r2.smk
encap_r3.smk
encap_r6.smk
credit01.smk
I am still having smack movie not found error when i play the campaign. can someone pls advise what .smk filename that i might be missing here, in particular the resupply/replenish sub tender one?

There are 312 smk files in the Anim folder, I'm not sure how to tell which ones are related to which missions....

Neal:
I remember FA reused most anim like adcap launch, torp hit.. etc...
for this particular smk which is the sub surface and docks next to the sub tender ship is the one that i cannot disable like the weapons.. it shd have a special name.. just like SWSlogo.smk = software sorcery logo ... or openmvie.smk for open movie ;)
Do you have a screenshot of the list in general?

If your version is a legit one, I can help you. I bought the game on ebay and made an ISO of the cd so I don't have to use the cdrom. I could send it to you over msn or something. If you paid for the game you should be able to play it.

Yeah, and if Julhelm's most excellent solution trips you up (really shouldn't) pm me and I'll walk you through it till you get underway. Glad to see this little gem still kicks up a little fervent interest. :salute:

my favorite mission, if i recall it correctly, involved a plane dropping a torpedo on your boat and the sub driver having to out maneuver all the torpedos and sink a russian boomer. it was hair raising!

Hi all,
I have just trying to install FastAttack via dosbox in UbuntLinux 10.4. I first cloned the CD into an image file and mounted it in a directory.
I then run dosbox, then mounting the clone image of the CD and my C: directory. Installation seemed to be OK. Sound test passed all right but when trying to run the game I just got the following message
"The CD in the Drive is labeled:
Fast Attack CD No Longer in Drive"
I would really appreciate some hint to overcome this problem.
