Hi guys, this is just a rant post to get some pressure off.
I had just engaged an enemy convoy in the Java sea in my S-18 and was about to sneak away. After more than an hour of dodging destroyers I was finally hit by a depth charge which exploded close to my boat. I couldn't believe what I saw, the hull had absolutely no damage. There was a nice 0 standing there. Strangely the depth charge was able to take out my bulkheads, both diesel and both electrical engines. Everything destroyed beyond repair!!! Game Over!!!:damn:
I really wonder how a depth charge that didn't even scratch my hull could destroy all this beyond repair?:nope:
Now I can start a new career... :damn::damn::damn:
Don't make the same mistake that I did. I thought all three destroyers were out of depth charges when I attacked the convoy for a second time at waters not deeper than ca. 70 feet. Unfortunately the fourth (:damn:) destroyer still had plenty of stuff with him....
Rant over:dead:

I have to start a new career as well :(
I was waiting for a convoy to pass by and i was able to sink a destroyer.
After succesfully avoiding several warships who were depthcharhing in challow waters :shifty: , i had to wait for two days. The rear of my sub was compleatly flooded so i was hitted ofcourse. Now the problem is, after several days i was able to heal my man and repair some things. After a week my proppelors finally were fixed but i have one diesel destroyed and could only move forward under water for some reasen.
But worst of all, my ruther doesn't work at all ! so I can only move forward and backword. And i have only 1 save. Their isn't seems to be any damage to the ruther control systems so i have no idea what caused it. Also after 2 days of staying stationary under water my attack periscope was suddenly destroyed. I DID NOT DO ANYTING :p
Let this be a lesson, make sure you have several savings so if you are pinned down by ships and when you are NEVER able to escape alive you are pretty pissed you have to restart all over.

I get ghost damage all the time...no hull damage but bulkhead damage and sometimes spontanous flooding without any damage showing.:damn:

I've randomly died in SH4 a couple dozen times.
The last time was two nights ago when I was returning to base after stumbling in front of a nice TF that had the Hirayu and Shokaku carriers inside their centerline....I initially managed to get hits on both and a heavy cruiser that I wasn't even shooting at. After spending two hours shaking the escorts and safely bugging out and driving some 2000km back halfway to Midway, I dove to avoid a plane (possibly coming off of Wake Island) and somehow while using a low TC to pass the remainder of that day underwater at standard propulsion I suddendly and randomly died.
Sweetness.
I reloaded the save before I hit the TF and sank the H and S FC's again using the remainder of my torpedo's and then RTB to finish a Uboat patrol out in the Indian Ocean when nvlddmkm.sys pays me a visit while Im scouting out some harbor in India.

I've started a new carreer yesterday and i have destroyed as twice as much ships as before so i can't complain, it was only my second mission :D.
Now i'm just making sure i have 2 saves. :yep:

If I get destroyed I accept that. Just loading a svegame is a bit like cheating to me.:-? (why on earth do I have to be so honest to myself:damn:)

Cheating ? I don't want to start all over just because my ruther doesn't funtion anymore. It even shows no damage, my ships was actually a wreck. It had holes everywhere :p But i could still use it, except the stupid ruther so i could not RTB (return to base)

I was referring to my own situation with no engines/motors left.
If you want to load a savegame youre are definetely free to do so, I wasn't attacking your position on that.
Everybody shall play the game in the way it's the most fun for him.:D
P.S.
I think you lost your "rudder".:D

I didn't saw any damage in my damage controle screen but i wanted to look under water but it was stormy for like 2 days long so never could check plus their was sun shining at my screen so couldn't see a thing under water.
Oh well, i'm now further than i was yesterday
I see it as a learning experience. :D
I've experienced the rudder damage in an S-boat too. It is a little flakey. If your rudder is out, it cannot be repaired by the crew. OK, I can understand that. However, in game you can't steer at all....nada....without a rudder, hence the game is over. In real life some measure of steering can be accomplished with engines (reverse port engine, forward on starbord etc. etc.).
I think a way to address this would be to allow some minimal steerage when the rudder is destroyed or severely damaged. While it should be difficult to maneuver in that situation, it should not be impossible.
In the grand scope of things, this is a small nitpick. However, it would be nice.

In stock SH4, even with the addition of the Hull Integrity Meter, isn't ownship damage still just simple hitpoint based? You take enough hit points, your boat is toast, regardless of the specifics of the damage.
I don't know how the sim even determines what to show on the hull meter - I've always just thought of it as pretty pointless, and even more so, pretty meaningless (other then indicating the fact that you have taken some structural damage that your crew cannot repair at sea).
