Hi there seadawgs
I was just wondering what the "T" key control is actually for the info text says its a snorkel but when at periscope depth I dont hear the diesel engines start running when this is up. As welll on deck and also in the icon control list the said device looks likes and is quoted as being an SD radar (you can see it if you look up a little on deck and press the T key
SO what actually is it a RADAR (for surface or air?) or a snorkel????
My money is on the RADAR but even if im right does it actually work ??? but anyways there should really be a snorkel system in the game it would expand on the strategical element of the game ...:|\\

There are no snorkels in the game. I think someone tried to mod one in a while back, but I'm not sure. That is the SD radar that raises and lowers. You can stay submerged while checking for air threats. Very handy!

It is for your air search radar. Fleetboats didn't have snorkels until after WW2, they really didn't need them in theatre.

Ok thx for that, one more point. The 1.5 version of the game UBM obviousley has the uboats and correct me if im wrong here but the Germans did develop the snorkel during ww2 ??? So is it in the game for the expansion pk?? History would decreed that it should be
If not mayb this could be an idea for a MOD that basically gives more strategical elements to the sim:smug:

I will have to defer on the Uboat question, I have the expansion but I have never even seen the inside of the Uboats. I know they had snorkels but I don't know if they had them in their PTO ships or not as they wouldn't really be that much help in the much clearer waters in the Indian Ocean. Remember, at periscope depth you stick out like a sore thumb to an aircraft.

Xantrokeles has modded in a snorkel for his Type XXI. There's also an older one for the Type IXD2, and he's going to release a Type XIB gunship with a snorkel.

I know they had snorkels but I don't know if they had them in their (monsun boats) or not as they wouldn't really be that much help in the much clearer waters in the Indian Ocean. Remember, at periscope depth you stick out like a sore thumb to an aircraft.
From all accounts ive read, the uboats in the indian ocean didn't have much in the way of material or logistical support. They went to sea with what they were outfitted with in Germany or France, and were then far removed from any source of "upgrades". If they didn't have it when they left, they didn't get it. I have seen at least one picture of a uboat with the 1st version of their conning tower without the AA guns added, so they all werent fully "decked out". Snorkels in general were pretty much relegated out by shear luck if there happened to be enough of them or if you were well connected enough to aquire one. Its a safe assumption that most monsun boats (possibly all, but im not sure), didn't have snorkels.
On top of that they had torpedo problems out there. What they had was stored for a long time and was prone to corrosion and breakdown. They didn't have much of a selection, and from what ive read, pretty much had to beg borrow, or steal what they could from the japanese who's inbase support had much to be desired. If im not mistaken, it was the uboats crew who had to do all their own repairs and such ( as opposed to dockyard workers). There was no supportive facilities in the far eastern bases to speak of, at least, not that im aware of.
As to how clear the indian ocean is, ive no idea. As to the pacific, only one uboat entered the paciific ocean. The majoirty were elewhere, as is evidenced by this map:
