Took a pic while on base this weekend, figured I'd share it. For those who don't know this was the sub stricken by fire in 2004. Now she sits on the synchrolift, repairs deferred indefinitely.

I thought it looked rather sharp in black & white as well:

She looks in bad shape.

I'm glad we built the Collins class subs here in Australia, they may have had problems, but all of them are in service. Now if we could just get the crews to run them....:hmm:

I question the statement that synchrolifts have supplanted traditional dry docks, but I don't have any research to back up my position.

The little blue huts all in a row there house the winches for the synchrolift. To the left there is a large shed for sliding the subs into for extended work. I'm not sure why they leave the sub exposed to the elements. Maybe, being newer than the shed, it just doesn't fit.

It seems odd that she's on the sychrolift at all, if they aren't planning on repairing her any time soon. Unless her watertight integrity is compromised, i;m suprised they don't just tie her to the quay. Are the repairs being put off due to lack of funds or complexity, or is it just not worth it to fix her up?:hmm:

Lovely pics fatty, up to your usual standard :)

For anyone interested, here's the page on the LE Roisin, which suffered severe storm damage while trying to reach the Chicoutimi. Eventually a Royal Navy Type 23 reeached her.

The Canadian Navy has some huge headaches these days
Windsor Star Article (http://www.canada.com/windsorstar/news/editorial/story.html?id=eefca465-bb23-40c5-9d33-d4ae764e0359)

The Harper rebuilding plan thus far is all talk. And there is a lot of criticism about the arctic patrol ships, as they will be too small and light to operate in Arctic waters much of the year (so some argue, makes them pointless and a waste of funds).

P.S. recent Janes article (http://www.janes.com/news/defence/jdw/jdw080624_2_n.shtml) - none of the Canadian Navy's four subs are currently operational.
