I never got to read actual children's books when I was a child. I had to learn piano and recite a verse from Shakespeare every single day... even though I never felt myself to be any good at the piano... and Shakespeare was really that last thing on Earth that I ever cared about... even though he was a great writer, but that's not the point.

The point is, how should I react to seeing this?

Here's the only copy of an 'undoctored' book I can find, and it's from about 20 years after the policeman one, so the style is a bit different.
