View Full Version : Which Radar?

I have recently upgraded to the FuMo-30. With the FuMo-29 I could get a picture of a convoy at night in stormy weather. The FuMo-30 hasn't been able to do that so far.
So my question is, which of the available radars is best adapted for sub use?
So far, I'm considering going back to the FuMo-29.
Thanks in advance.

Well, as I have understanded, that the FuMo-30 is more unstable at storm. When I had the FuMo-29 (and still have) I notice that on the storm it quite rapidly switches On and Off, due to the high waves I think.
Also, I remember that the FuMo-30 has wider area of radar, but less range.

Stick to the Fumo-30, as Fumo-29 only has a +/- 10 degree arc, so you have to physically turn your u-boat around to get a full sweep.

FuMo-30....if your playing GWX, check the manual http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
No radar.
You will get detected by using radar far more than you ever detect other ships.

But in a storm, where you can't see more than 30 m. And have radar detector.
Inside a convoy, its really, REALLY usefull. You can dodge the DD's while you hunt the ships.
And more usefull when you got some of the Escorts & DD's destroyed

TBH I sometimes find the radar detector to be of much more benefit. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

It truly is, I recommend everyone to get that than anything else.

I tend to agree that the FuMo-29 is the best stormy weather radar, but I am learning that with the FuMo-30, as soon as I hear "Detecting Radar signals" its time to head below water.
Thanks guys.

Any radar is perhaps imo only practical in heavy fog/rain. It gives your position away.
29 makes your boat look stupid, like it's wearing a daiper.

Many great warmachines and technology's devices tend to look stupid. I myself don't give a damn about the looks of them, and probaly most of us don't too (Womens are execption).

use the german radar is like use a flashlight in the dark while the enemy have light intensified googles or infrared.
the destroyers only have to follow your signal to found you in the storm.
your detector only give you an idea of bearing but not about distance.
the range is too short, and the electronics very primitive, nothing compared with the U.S. Fleet boats

My only intention in asking was to show that at night, and in a storm, the FuMo-29 can show a convoy's position, the DD's position and not necessarily distance.
I have not had such luck using the FuMo-30, yet.
In one experience, I ran across a small Brittish Convoy. 3 DD's and about 10 ships altogether. I managed to sink the entire convoy, escorts included. I had 2 "fish" left in the stern, and 6 "fish' in the fore-section.
Turning south in grid CG-11, I reloaded all tubes. And then the storm hit. At about 23:00, "radar" picked up 6 ships to the east. no distance, just a general direction. Turning Northeast, I managed to take a position in front of the convoy. I dove to the 13m mark and ahead slow, I was picked up by ASDIC and two escorts approached. As usual, I went to flank speed, dropped my decoys, and the DD's backed off far enough that I was able to take them out with my stern tubes.
Then I proceeded to sink two T-3's and one Liberty ship.
Had it not been for the FuMo-29, I might have not found this convoy.
But so far, I haven't had this type of "luck" using the FuMo-30.
So what I was asking mainly is do the preceeding "radars" get better? If not, so far as storm conditions persist, the FuMo-29 has already proved itself.
