I tried searching but couldn't see the answer I'm looking for.
When saving a game as a replay (i.e. save replay) what exactly does the replay aspect do. I loaded up a saved replay and had nothing but the sub sailing...and sailing.....and sailing (I thought I'd saved the replay just prior to some action). What can one do with the replay function? Just curious.

The replay starts from the very beginning of your patrol, at the homebase harbor or just outside the base. It shows your sub and replays everything you did upuntil you slected the Save Replay option. Along the bottom you will see markers (in red or green, as I recall)which indicate where "action" occurred...combat, sinkings, etc....so you can fast forward to those points in time to re-view the action, but only from the view of your Submarine(You cannot go inside the sub, nor select external camera views of enemy ships, etc. Then, you can re-enter the mission at any point in time and take control again of your patrol. Again, in the Re-play mode, you cannot shift views, camera or otherwise. You can only watch your own submarine. Once you jump back in and take control again, you have all your normal controls/options and can continue with your patrol.

What would happen is I first used the save replay in mid-patrol? The replay would start from that point in mid-patrol?
You would have access to everything since you left port up till the mid patrol point.

Erm, sorry. Perhaps my post wasn't clear.
Let's say I make a number of save games (non-replay):
1 when I leave port
1 enroute to patrol area (overwritten a number of times)
1 "patrol in progress" (again, overwritten as my patrol progresses)
Then I encounter a target. I save the game at that point & quit the game.
When I next play I start off from the latest save, where I encounter a target.
After the action is over I save with replay.
Would the replay show:
Just the action of the game from where I continued, or everything from the moment I left port?

My suggestion is for you to try out your hypotheticals on a mission/patrol. One thing you will find is that the "Replay Save" option is not always available. I have never figured out when/why the option sometimes is 'greyed out'. It may have to do with a situation/scenario such as you have described. Please post the results of your research here in this thread.

If I have understood this correctly, you must always choose to save replay whenever you save a game, otherwise, you will lose the option to save the replay on your next attempt. In other words, once you skip a saved replay when saving a game, the option will no longer be available for the rest of that particular patrol.
I quit using the replay myself, I just didn't find it usefull. I can see why the poster found this confusing, as I was too.
