Ice is important. If you plan to live on Mars, it solves a lot of complex problems, such as a source of water for the Astronauts, water to grow plant life for food, and of course with water, you have a constant supply of oxygen using equipment as found on subs!
Finding carbon based life outside of Earth becomes a possibility if it exists too!
