Since I'm doing my Occupational Health and Safety degree I was wondering what safety measures (if any) were employed on submarines during surface sailing particularly during bad weather. My guess would be safety straps but I'm not sure. What did they use?

I can't speak about WW2 but in the 60s I rode a diesel boat and one time on a trip from Norfolk to the Azores we went thru 5 hurricanes in 3 weeks. I was a seaman standing lookout watches and the OOD and myself on the bridge had double lifelines on. We were doing 45degree (how do you get the little degree sign?) rolls and the hatch was dogged shut cause we were looking at waves breaking over our heads and, at times, standing up to our chests in water. I was totally awed and fascinated with how immensely powerful the ocean was.

@Urge
The degree sign is the one left of the 1 key (at least on German keyboards....)

@DavyJones
I know that German subs were equipped with safety straps to prevent the crew from being washed away.

In America we are stuck with Alt-0186. WWII subs were not OSHA approved. If OSHA ever got their hands on submarines they would be perfectly safe, but they wouldn't work!:rotfl:

Ladders????!!!!!!! You need OSHA approved stairways with hand rails, non-skid surfaces and handicap acccess there.

What the hell is this????!!!! This is NOT an OSHA approved door. The bottom doesn't go all the way to the deck, it isn't wide or tall enough, and you aren't allowed to lock an interior door if it leads to an exit.

Yeah, I can see it now...:rotfl:

OSHA reps would be on Larry King telling us that "They don't see how any submariners are still alive with all of the violations." and that "those torpedo thingys are dangerous!"

Congress can then pass the Submariners Fairness Act and tack on some more payroll deduction "because we care."

Well, I'm doing the UK NEBOSH study and boy they seem to have a law for almost everything! And you're right OSH Inspectors would ground all subs if they got their hands on them. That's the thing with safety- you can't go over the top with it. The HSE in the UK stresses on awareness and self-regulations. Thanks for the fedback on the subs.

Hah! I bet the Fire Marshall would have a fit over that as well, blocking a fire exit and all :p
