I wonder if that would be the biggest spider in the world but I am really afraid to ask

Yeah my dad came across a few of those during his tours over there, they're bloody nasty things. Give a nasty bite too. Aparantly my dad said that when they only had very basic toilet facilities i.e. a tube into the ground for peeing into critters would hide in there away from the heat so you had to be careful not to get your family jewels nipped by some local wildlife

I had something like this:
http://www.camelspiders.net/camel-spider-bite.htm
happen on the back of my left leg, just above the knee. Only it wasn't a camel spider. Never was sure what exactly bite me. Doc's thought maybe a brown recluse. But they did to me exactly what was described in that link.. EXACTLY. My leg was so badly infected that local anesthisa didnt work. They milked puss out of my leg for 20 minutes (no joke, by the time i was able to get medical attention my leg was so far gone i couldn't bend it anymore). They Also cut out the "necrotic tissue". It Hurt like hell (i was given a wad of gause to bite down on) when the doc cut it out. It was like he took a core sample out of my leg and set it on the tray next to me. I could see the skin, the lay of fat under it, the meat under that ,etc. Sure did make a nice scar.

 Now I would not like to encounter one of those during a nocturnal trip to the can!
Spiders (or at least spider like creatures) don't normally bother me, infact some are quite cute; but I think I could make an exeception for that beast. :yep:
On the subject of desert creepy crawlies, my great grandfather was stung by a scorpion in Mesopotamia (basically Iraq) during WWI. Forgot to shake his tunic before he put it on. It swelled up too, and had to be lanced, my grandmother said that half of the palm on one of his hands was a big flat scar from it. No mention of camel spiders though, but no doubt he encountered them too!

If you were bit by a brown recluse you are one lucky dude. I can just imagine (well no I can't) how much that must have hurt.
Hope you made a good recovery :(

HunterICXThat wound is close to losing that finger. Its not the bite, but the resulting infection that is doing that for him. He might be allergic to it.

Sometimes you don't know you are handling something until it is too late.
Reminds me of this incident last summer. I was driving home from Maine and we stopped for a coffee. As we were getting ready to leave i felt something on the small of my back under my shirt. It felt like a wood chip or pebble, something like that.
Anyways I reached back, grabbed it and pulled out a very alive and angry hornet! :o Luckly i had him by the back and he couldn't reach me with his stinger and the window was open so I was able to quickly chuck him out.
For the next 250 miles I kept imagining i felt another one moving around under my clothes.

Camel spiders are NOT spiders. They form a separate order of arachnids, like scorpions for example.

EEW, that spider is really nasty and a bite by it.... really hurts
Fortunately I am living in urban area and therefore have much less chance in encountering this pesky creature (cockroaches are far more common)

I've seen that picture before. Been circulating on the net for some time. Im not sure which spider its attributed to, i think a brown recluse that went untended for some time. I could be mistaken though.

The picture of the guy's hand is a brown recluse bite. Their bites cause necrosis of tissue that can keep coming back for years sometimes. I have heard of some people being treated with a stun gun or electrical shocks to stop the damage (they do the same with rattlesnake bites sometimes).
Since we are in a competition to gross one another out, here is what a good rattlesnake bite looks like:
http://www.envenomated.com/images/articles/jshandbite.jpg
The Camel Spider isn't a spider at all (they have 10 legs and spiders have 8) and they aren't venomous. They have big fangs and can give a painful puncture wound for a bite but other than that they are harmless. My buddy in Las Vegas has gotten something similar in his garden and they are pretty big and scary but that is about it. I was more freaked out by the Black Widow I nearly put my hand on when I was out there that was by his swimming pool.

That spider picture with the US soliders has been around for awhile. A guy here who had a contract in iraq during the war protecting company personnel said they aren't as big as they look about the size of a mans fist. He was telling us they had to clear out this old building once to set it up as a base the place practically pitch black & full of those spiders and wild dogs. They went in there with shotguns and just shot anything that moved.

One of the Wikipedia pictures shows the jaws of this beast. Crikey, looks like a small bear trap.
I think I can go the rest of my life not seeing one of these critters face to face

I had two turantulas when I was a kid. I had a red leg and a cinnimon brown. The red leg was very friendly and would sit on my hand without issue. The latter was a nasty little bastard that would rear up and nash his fangs at me. I would throw some crickets in his cage and run like hell. One day the red leg got out and was hanging around the house for over a week. One morning my dad woke me up and said my little friend was in the basement. I do not know how she got three stories down without being seen but she made it. My morbid little self named her Mortisha.
You can be thankful your dad wasn't bitten by Mortisha, or the spider wouldn't be the only thing Red!
