Ok...Surybaja's being taken, the closest base is Freemantle, and I ran out of fuel before getting there.
Am I simply screwed? I'd like to think not. That was a friggin' great mission. I sank a lot of tonnage.

Try using unlimited fuel.

I had a very similar situation occur. After doing some reading in these forums, I learned that I could temporarily fix the situation by hacking two files in my last saved game.

As GG5056 suggested, I switched to Unlimited Fuel until I was able to reach a port, at which point, I hacked the saved game files again to turn off Unlimited Fuel.

I may be wrong, but I thought that the game did not let the player switch the realism settings after starting a career. If this is the case, the only resolution is to hack the saved game files or start a new career.

I am still using XP. If you are using Vista, the pathnames will likely be different.
The 2 files to edit are located:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames\

Scroll down to your most recent saved game. It will be in a folder, labeled something like "0000003d". Each saved game creates a new folder.

Inside the folder, the first file to edit is "GameplaySettings.cfg"

The second file is of the same name located in the nested folder "UPCInitial".

Open each .cfg file in Notepad and find the entry:
"LimitedFuel=true"
Change it to:
"LimitedFuel=false"
and then save.

If you change only one file, and not the other, the game will reject the change.

Once you get to port and refuel, save the game, hack the 2 files in the new saved game folder and you should be good to go.

After having this happen once, I always keep a close eye on my fuel reserves and keep Midway as my last ditch refueling station.

Easy there. Sometimes you just over extend yourself a little too much.

"Sometimes" is not allowed, as there are no tow trucks out there. In this post-modern world of refusing to take responsibility for our lives and seeking to avoid consequences for bad financial, marriage, and even criminal decisions we sometimes forget how many times it is OK to drop a baby: none. No excuses. No avoidance of consequences.

The sooner you quit looking for "fairness" and start finding how things work the happier you'll be, sailor. Subs run out of fuel. Good people die. Skippers get canned. If they survive.

This message has been brought to you by Admiral Lockwood and the friendly crew at BUPERS, who wish you a happy fathers' day and extend their warmest wishes for your success.:up:

Now get shipshape and don't run out of fuel again.:cool: No cheating!

Speaking of Fathers Day, that is pretty much exactly what my dad would say (and has said) if he were still around. He pounded that into me from day one.:yep:

I can relate to that one! Dad didn't miss a trick! And he always had words of wisdom even if he chewed on ya' a little. He made it stick first, then came back later and would give you the old, "here's how you should'a done it" lesson. Didn't do any harm either, as I do that for my kids these days.

Got to agree with you guys on this! I think we all had the same father.:lol: I think if my sub ran out of fuel, he would tie a rope on me and have me tow it in. "Now, you won't do that again, will ya? Now, sit down and let me show you how to calculate fuel consumption." You break it you fix it or buy a new one, whatever it takes to make it right.
Happy Father's day Dad!! Wish you were still here. And happy Father's Day to all the Fathers on Subsim.

I recently ran into a unique problem shipping out of Pearl at the beginning of the war. I topped off at Midway before heading out to my patrol zone around south Japan. I arrived with 65% fuel before leaving my second patrol zone around Luzon with 55% fuel remaining. That should be plenty, right? Particularly when I head back on slow speed?

I can't even get within 2000 km of Midway. :stare:

Does SH4 actually incorporate ocean currents to the extent that the return trip uses 50% more fuel than the outbound trip? I find this difficult to believe, given that I can't even get my speed guage on the TDC to work.

I could've sworn that I read in the manual that we can refuel at neutral bases, so I managed to make it to a Dutch port. I found plenty of Dutch ships, but no refuel ability. Same thing happened when I made it to a non-Sub U.S. port. Darwin is a no go as well.

Now this is where you screwed up. Do not go slow or fast, but somehwere in between them. For most Fleet Boats this spot is around 9.5 knots, I don't know about the S-class. What comes to refueling, you can do it in any port with an anchor symbol.

I guess that becomes the issue. IRL there were. Can't recall a single instance of a sub being scuttled because they ran out of fuel. They very often did find themselves in need of more fuel to accomplish the mission. I think there were several documented instance of boats being diverted to offload fuel to another before heading home, or on the way home. SHould finding yourself short on fuel become an auto game ender? I don't think so. You should be able to radio a status report and have then see that you are lacking fuel to make it home and divert an asset to deal with it. Now a renown hit would certainly be in order.

I was going to bring this point up before the many rencarnation of my dad decided to scold me and make me feel bad for pointing out that sometimes you over extend yourself or that it sometimes seems to take more fuel getting home then getting out there.

What about refill and then keep going on the mission?

if you dont mind modding you can go to sh3 minitweaker and edit the range of your boat so your boat can carry 10 times the amount of fuel

its under eg: ssn_gato_sim.txt or whatever sub it is

milessurfaced=9000000 for fuel

milessubmerged=9000000 for battary

^^^
subs oparational range without refueling or recharge

If you could just say "hey I ran out of fuel bring me some more" why would you even bother with turning on limited fuel? I'm sure there were instances where more fuel was required for missions but I would assume they were rare and maybe even planned. (if they knew they needed more range than the sub offered) I just can't imagine a skipper keeping his job if he ran his ship out of fuel.

Out of all the playing time I have put in, I've only ran out of fuel one time back when I first started and received battery damage and it kept charging, thus, running me out. It's not hard to manage.

Why go thru all that editing when you can just click Unlimited Fuel ? :roll:

I don't think it models ocean currents, but it does model speed reductions based on weather. If you had glassy seas on the way out and gale-force winds on the way back, your speed would be several knots lower and thus your fuel efficiency goes down.

However, I suspect your issue is slightly different. If you ever suffered battery damage in this patrol, the recharge setting doesn't normally switch off when the batteris fill up. It makes a HUGE difference in fuel economy. The odds are you're stuck in recharge mode, and that's taking all your fuel. Once that happens, you have to manually turn off recharging every time for the remainder of the patrol.

Wasn't this fixed in 1.5? In my previous patrol my sub suffered some damage, including to the aft batteries, which my crew fixed after we had successfully evaded the DDs hunting me. When I surfaced, the batteries charged up to 100% and the charging light turned off automatically.
