View Full Version : Ships not spotted though at VERY close distance..

Hi all,

I recently made my way into an English harbour at night, yeah. But the anchored ships either did not appear at all an the map/target notepad or appeared only at very close distance when I almost ran into them.
Why don't the ships appear on the "system" while I'm able to see them very clearly through the periscope?
Is this a common problem, do you sink these ships without identifying them?

Thanks,

Vorfluter

P.S I'm running SH3 via SH3 Comander with the GWX 2.1 Mod

Welcome aboard, Kaleun Vorfluter!
I have never had a problem like that. Though at maximum ranges or low visibility, sometimes you see them on the map and on the peri or the other way around.

Hi Brag,

it's really strange if you're almost ramming the ship while you don't see anything on the notepad.
To be clear: I can see the ship with the periscope, but nothing on the map, nothing on the notepad.

Sometimes, a ship is finally spotted after a few minutes, sometimes not at all.

See you,

Vorfluter

I am not sure but check the setting in the difficulty level before you play. If im following you, i think the problem comes from realism lvl from god eyes mod?!?!?!/ Anyone correct me if im wrong

Hmm,

well, I've never installed something like a "god eyes mod", is it part of GWX?

Currently, these mods are enabled besides of GWX 2.1, they don't seem to deal with visibilty issues:
GWX - Enhanced Damage Effects
GWX - No Medals on Crew
GWX 2.1 Mission Orders

I am not sure but check the setting in the difficulty level before you play. What do you mean exactly? Realism settings?

Thanks,

Vorfluter

When you have opened the menu side of the game just before you start loading the career, on the lower, right hand side of the screen there will be a realism settings button.

Yes, sometimes that happens, it's a limitation of the game or mod or whatever (I presume game, but it could be the 16K mod). You can visually see the ship, but it doesn't show up on your contact map or on the notepad. I've found it happens fairly often when there's a large warship as part of convoy. You can't see the warship on the map/pad (typically a cruiser) even though you can see all the ships (larger and smaller) on all sides of it. More commonly, it happens at extreme ranges and/or in extreme weather. All you can really do is just try to get closer, or change the angle, or guestimate it yourself and input the settings manually.

I get that once in a while in harbours from stationary vessels. Try using your UZO or Periscope and use 'lock' on the vessel, it should show up after that, both as details, and on the contact map.

I believe this is a stock bug that arises sometimes. You can see the ship, but it doesn't show up on the map or notepad, and you can't lock the ship in your UZO or periscope. As mentioned above, seems to happen more in poor visibility or with several other ships around. Usually resolves itself as you get closer. Usually. :shifty:

Hi again,

well, it really happened only with stationary vessels so far. I think im going to ignore the fact that they don't show up on the notepad, but will I get any renown for sinking them if they didn't even turn up on the map?

The prob i often have autumn and winterseason in the atlantik that i have to be so close to the target to get a lock that the torpedoes are not armed when they hit the target with standard attackposition. The only solution i find so far is to let the target pass and let the torpedoes run behind them to extend the fire-hit time so they can arm propperly. Of cause the successrate is well below normal, the target detects me running behind him to be ready for another shot and i risc to loose the visual contact. Atm im messing with submerged/no-lock/hydro-detection-only attacks but thats a real challenge if i never had any lock yet cause of poor visibility. The window from seeing the hull in the attackmap and the target pass a point where the chance of hitting it with a fair rate being successful is getting to small or even impossible is very small.

btw. for stationary targets its not too difficult to hit them with manual torpedosettings without a lock.

Seearch for bad weather, foul weather, etc. to get tactics on engaging ships in limited visibility. It's very tough to do, and generally not worth it versus smaller ships.
