He seems to be more upset that
A) Edison's invention will be obselete.
B) They might fade photographs, like light doesn't?
C) They are made in China.

I have them all over in my house and I have no problems, NO PROBLEMS subman. No intereference with my tele or wireless telephone. Also the glass on the buld is thicker than that of a standard light bulb. I've dropped mine from 5 feet onto a hard floor and it hasn't broken.

The amount of mercury in them is very small, not even the amount you can get in a thermometer. As for cost I can buy good quality bulbs ie Philips for 99p each so I have stocked up. So when the swich over comes I'll have a decent stock.

Fact is they use less electricity and the mercury content is less than that produced by coal fired power stations powering traditional bulbs.

These bulbs usually boast how many thousands of hours they'll last. They do last a lot of hours. Except that by the middle of their life-time the light gets weaker, darker/bluish (depends) and the bulb takes longer to warm up to its full color, weaker as it then is. Some will also buzz terribly after aging. Next to the noise, mercury poisoning is a relief.

Thx Yorktown  You saved me alot of typeing.:yep:

I saw the difference the first billing. And no noise or noticeable difference in lighting.

Bought them in bulk at Costco.

Most in my home are over 2yrs old.

My problem is flourecent lights give me a headache and are un-natural looking. I mostly use GE Reveal light bulbs in almost every part of my house for pure light. And, if i didn't have a choice, I prefer a yellow look to the flourecent bulbs as well. The flourecent bulbs put out a depressing form of light. its un-natural and there is no way for them to fix it either.

Anyway, GE Reveal bulbs are full spectrum. No other light bulb I have tried (And I have some CFL versions, and hologen, and standard bulbs) outputs such a pure light like the Reveal does. Its the perfect light bulb and brings out color in your paint that you can only get from the sun otherwise.

These bulbs last a long time. I have a few around my house. The light given is not displeasing to my eye. I do believe the initial cost outweigh the longevity these bulbs have thus saving in the long run for replacements. Heck, a few of the older bulb were blown after the first click of the switch.

Ill be honest, I purchase the cheapie old bulbs and the blow very easily. My mother had a lightbulb made in Turkey..it lasted 14 years. So, quality certainly plays a factor in bulbs longevity.

No doubt that good quality energy saving bulbs last long, have almost no warm-up time, do not turn blue after half their lifetime anymore -all that is history, tales from the beginning with the early generation of such bulbs. However, the one main problem I have with them is light colour. even warm white ones do not transport enough red frequency waves, but tend towards a certain poisonous yellow-green, which distorts colour reproduction significantly, and also looks bad to the naked eyes. If somebody tells me that is not true, I must refuse that by pointing at the fact that I am talking about physical solid facts: the gas elements used in these bulbs and brought to shining physically are not capable to carry the frequencies that transport the red coloured part of the light spectrum. If you say the light looks like normal bulbs, then you are seeing things that physically are not there - and you might want to check with your eye doctor. ;) :-j

These colour distortion that especially become obvious with object including red colour components (they fade) make these things very annoying for me.

And if you really want to save energy on large scale in your household, skip energy saving bulbs and go LED all the way. I use an Ixon IQ front light on my bike, a single diode light that is. The range and brightness of it as well as the focussing of it I did not imagine before starting to use it some months ago. It beats every strong halogen-handlight (Maglight and such) hands down. But again, gemütliches White for your living room is a problem for LEDs to produce, too, they are either blue-white, or bright-white like snow. thats nice at a working desk, but not when sitting in your living room and enjoying the company of friends, or reading a book.

Many of them don't contain mercury now. A lot of the first generation did.

I think the one thing he needed to say that he did say is why in the hell should congress have the right to tell me what lightbulb to buy?

But they also tell you what kind of toilet you can buy - it can only flush a certain amount of water for example.

The only problem I have had with these bulbs is when I bought the n:vision brand. They are not so good. Had one blow out in less than one month of casual use.

Now I stick with some of the better brands and like it.

Does anyone have a website for the LED bulbs? Some of my less accessible lights might be better off with LEDs

Why not get a duel flush system? Then all will be well!
