Hiya's,

I think i'm onto something with the nvlddmkm.sys problems :)

If you are having ctd or black screen lockups etc

What i would like is anyone reading with vista either x86 or x64 and all versions to post back with a yes or no answer to a few questions

1 Have you turned off UAC ?

2 Which drivers are you using (eg: 175.16 x64)

Post when you can so i can see if my theory holds true

Many Thanks

Have not turned off UAC but I did install to a directory not under Program Files. Was running 169.25 with few issues. Started having problems after going to 175.16 but still seem to be haveing problem after driver cleaning and going back. So I have returned to 175.16 and get a drop every now and then but not as frequent as I was. A few setting (live triple buffering on) have made the blue screens much less frequent.

Curious about the theory. PM it to me if you don't want to skew the responses.

Hiya Rip,

Well the theory is this (ps: i send all games in x64 to a folder on C: i call Games)

Whenever i format and install vista i turn UAC off to make life a bit simpler

Now i came across a post about elevations not happening correctly due to UAC being off where some drivers etc are involved

So i put on UAC without rebooting and removed nvidia driver

Rebooted and redid nvidia driver, answering the UAC prompt

Now just before doing the UAC back on i also did something in the nvidia and System32\Drivers (i had forgot, as i'm trying that many ideas out lol)

So now i have edited a certain file to do with the driver, Turned UAC back on, Redone drivers and all is well

This is on vista ultimate x64 running both AA's @ x4 and other options in driver options i have on

Plain SH4 1.5 using torpedo school

No lockups like i had, So now i've gotta rollback and see if it's solely UAC (you seem to confirm it might not matter whether it's on or off, so this theory maybe wrong) that's the problem if it's off

Or is it what i've done to edit the driver file (tried so many drivers i installed 1st i clicked on and they were 158.24 !!!)

Will get back asap i try combinations

No doubt what i've typed makes no sense as i'm dog tired but hope you catch my drift ;)

Hiya's,

Right, At the moment i have got the Nvidia Driver 158.24 x64 working in my Vista ultimate

I have tried no end of torpedo tests and not a single problem but this doesn't mean somewhere down the line it will not fubar (but man i'm fed up of torpedo explosions lol) but it's looking good from my end

It involves having UAC On not Off !!!

Also a renaming of a file and copy and paste of a file and a CMD command

I am now going to try the latest official nvidia release x64 175.16's , If that works i'll post about that, If it doesn't work i'll have to post the howto on the x64 158.24's

I am testing with AA's set @ x4 and other nvidia control panel settings raised as i normally do, Running latest TMO with a few other minor mods so i'm optomistic

Going to test PE3 now i think, Then drop back on testing latest drivers

I am guessing that vista x86 users should (i stress should) be able to do the same thing with similar drivers

Post back when i can

Have Vista x64 Home Premium with SP1, and one of the first things I did was turn off the UAC. Also I have all of my games added to the DEP list, and have them set to run in compatability mode for XP, or for older games, WIN 98 SE. My driver version is 7.15.11.6944. The ya re the stock drivers that came with the eVGA 8800 GTS vid cards.

The x86 file is common between all versions of Vista. Should be, 32 bit or 64 bit versions.

The reason for adding the games to the DEP list, is because I can't find the boot.ini file where you were able to turn off DEP in XP. In Vista it's either hidden real well, or doesn't exsist.

Downloading. I will be ecstatic if this stops the crashes. I have started to spend more time playing GTA4 on my XBOX lately from crash frustration. Hopefully this will have me back beneath the waves this weekend.

Are those the 177 drivers? :o

I'm waiting for those as well. They should fix some issues with XP + 8800GTS 512. Something with how XP handles shaders. Doom 3 (among others) is completely unplayable as it stands now. Oh well, quess I have to hold out till a XP x86 version. Glad to hear they actually fix some issues, like Nvidia promised (heard that before  ).

*in response to below; Awesome, you're the best, would love to try them out. :)

All that needs to be changed is the .inf

Tell you what, I'll upload them in all the flavors

See if that helps some people out

Will edit back with links
