View Full Version : Take a new boat......NOT!!

I just finished a highly successful patrol (Palau-Rabaul, Dec 42/Jan 43, 5 merchants sunk) and was awarded a medal and then offered the choice of a new submarine or to continue with my current boat. Fortunately I had saved just prior to docking, here's why;
I took the offer of a new boat. I had over 3000 renown. My SD Radar and SJ Radar slots were now both empty (given it was a new, up to date boat you'd think this would have been automatically installed). So, I 'purchase' the SD and slide it into place, then, with plenty of 'renown' remaining I 'purchase' the SJ-1 radar but can I slide it into place?????.........Nope! A pop-up tells me I'm not allowed to do that. Needless to say I was torqued.
So I reloaded my saved game, arrived in port, picked up my medal and when offered a new boat told them to go pound salt and stuck with my old boat which already had the SD and SJ I'd acquired previously. I grabbed a couple of the wee homing torpedoes and set sail on a new mission.
I know this issue is not related to the mods. Can I suggest a mod that automatically gives every (appropriate) submarine the 'extra' toys based on the period of the war and NOT this stupid renown system??
OK, done venting. ;)

It gave you that popup because your new boat already has SJ-1.
Some improvements are already on the boat.

The slots for that kit in the sub status screen were empty. Do you mean there's a bug that doesn't display that kit in the new sub?

Uh, let's see. With the Porpoise you get:
More torpedoes
Higher surface speed
Better range:roll:
You have the option of purchasing SD radar early in the game, but it doesn't install (shows up as a "kit") until Sept '42. So if you get a new boat and it's pre SD radar date, you cannot purchase another kit. The kit is installed but not the radar. When the correct date arrives, your SD "kit" will install into the new boat. No worries about SJ radar. You don't have to buy it or install it. Comes with every boat new or not. Accept that new boat and sink ships like you have never thought possible with the old boat.

Well, the Porpoise goes 7 knots faster than the the S-Class on the surface and when you recharge your batteries you will still go on two propellers. Two extra torpedo tubes and four extra torpedoes are a nice addition as well. And last but not least it can go deeper.
But, well, sometimes statistics aren't just enough to convince someone to take a new boat. I'm sticking with my Porpoise now even though I've been given opportunity to upgrade to another model twice. I just like the boat.:D
I liked the S-Class a lot too, but it was simply too slow on the surface.:dead:

The Porpoise is a nice boat for sure, but recently I almost cried when engaging a huge Nip Task Force with a Porpoise, and thinking what could be accomplished with the four more tubes and at least six more torpedoes of a proper Fleet Boat :yep:

I quess it just depends on personal preference and area of operation. A S-boat is well suited to sailing from the bases in the Philipines and Australia; lots of shallow waters and a lot of landmasses around (read lots of airbases and dense aircover), so the boat doesn't need to be able to dive too deep and high submerged speed can be very beneficial. Range also doesn't need to be a problem, since you don't need to cover an entire ocean like when sailing from Hawaii / Midway. And 2 extra tubes, well... I tend not to use them that often anyway. I fire the first four tubes and only use the extra 2 if I need to finish something of, saves me from have to bring the boat about. The increased surface speed however is always a big bonus.
To each his own. :)
*just got offered a new command. Any benefits from trading in a Gar for a Gato class?
