The new Euro 2008 it started...and Portugal play with the Turkish team and win the game (Port 2 vs Turk 0).
I hope this time the small countries as Portugal have the same chances to play Foothball, and show the World they valour, with out injustices was we feelt and we see in the Euro 2004, when Portugal recebe and organize the games.
I was a Portuguese, i only want to see my country and my team be treated as equal as the another teams of the world, nothing more!
P.S. Equal treatment and justice and no preferences from the UEFA, to be in the finals at all cost, ONLY BECAUSE ARE BIG COUNTRIES AND GENERATE MORE MONEY AND MORE AFLUENCE OF PEOPLE!
Good games to all!

You think Portugal was discriminated during the EURO2004?
Greece is also one of the smaller countries and they are the title defenders.
I don't want to judge your opinion but i am interested to know why you think that UEFA tries to prevent "smaller" Football countries to win the championship?
P.S. You also shouldn't make your country smaller than iit really is - considering Team Portugal's past successes and quality of individual players ;)

The dutch are in the last minutes of finishing off the Italians by a crushing 3:0. Don'T know if they should be seen as favourites, but it really would be about time that the Dutch land the really big coup. The Germans I have as secret favourites, they have no really spiking stars outshining the others, but the overall mixture of the team is a damn solid mixture. Germany could make it via a strong team effort, and team spirit. While beating the Poles 2:0, they already showed strong morale and aggressive 1.on-1 behavior. He - talking of american virtues! ;) :D What will come of the Italians and Portuegese remains to be seen.
I gave a German fan trikot to a British neighbour here in my street, we have many British soldier families up the street, irnically telling him that this is "your team dress this time". First he looked as if wanting to call the buddies from his batallion to embark right on my position, but then he laughed, and not too short. (We established loose contact for having met repeatedly by chance when walking and he has a marvellous big dog looking like a wolf, about which we engaged in talking,a nd nthe dog likes me whule biting foreigners away usually, he said. Since then we are good neighbours.

What a great game tonight. The Dutch played the fastest, most efficient counterattacking football I have seen in a long time going straight for the goal:yep:
I think Toni, Pirlo, Zambrotta and Grosso did OK for Italy, but their defence without Cannavaro was lacklustre.

The German team disgraced itself against Croatia by 1:2 today, lacking all the qualities it had shown in the past two years and phlegmatically stumbling across the field as if it was about playing Golf, beginner's class that is.
This turns the meeting with Austria into a real final, and since there always is a bit ressentiments involved when germany plays eiteher against hiolland or austria, it maybe will help to finally lighten up some hot emotions in the so far disappointing if not catastrophic atmosphere at the austrian fan-miles and public viewing places where so far only 5% of the expected number of international and local fans use to show up, German TV quoted Austrian TV. Where owners at beer stands were told they could expect to sell 40 barrels per day, so far they sell only two, they reported. Holland-Italy was a spectacular match, but so far the EM in general has been a desaster, I think.

Don't remind me of that match... horrible. They stumbled around completely helpless and orientationless. Nobody knew what he had to do, and against whom he had to play. Masses of individual mistakes. Worst match since many, many years. I also had the impression that they felt weak, and gave up early on - where as their morale in recent years has proven to be one of the strengths of their team. What the hell has happened with them?
Uuaaaahhrrgggghhh.
Early on, we all talked about Portugal needing to be the first in the group to avoiding Germany, since the german team was the most dangerous to us, in the quarter macht. Now I just don't know, if I want Portugal playing againt the germans or the croactians!
PS:if germany wins the last match and the croactians do not, they will ascend to first place! Correct if I'm wrong!

If the Dutch lose their last match, both France and Italy are out. Queer, but they said it on TV.
The Dutch are officialy the top favourite now. 3-0 against the world champions. 4-1 against the vice world champion. an extremely strong team, with a sensational offense line, no obvious weaknesses, and a world class goalie. So many top players in their team, and in the offense alone they have over half a dozen top class options - they can play with whomever they want, and it always would be a top team. They delivered the two best matches in the tournament so far. I favour them to win the championship before everyone else now, it is great fun to watch them, and after 20 years or even longer they are ripe to make a major coup now, really. It's their turn - and if not with such a spectacular team: when if not this time?

The German defeat against Croatia had to happen for a perfect dramaturgy. Because now, in the final match of the group round Austria has the chance to make it to the quarter finals by throwing Germany out of the tournament which is about the worst case scenario for a German football supporter.
My tip: Austria 0 - Germany 4.

Croatia did everything right, and it was a deserved victory. But I didnt see the Germans worse than against Poland, they were mediocre in both. In the media everyone is talking about the players not moving as much as against Poland, when in fact they were moving more (as can be seen by the statistics). And because of the counter offense in the second half they did not embarass themselves.
I find it amusing that the Austrians, who have shown morale, but no skill whatsoever, are now talking about throwing out Germany .. :rotfl:
My bet is also on a clear win against Austria but I don't see a lot of chances for germany winning the cup.

Well Portugal vs Swiss have as result 0-2 in my opinion the star of this game as the judge(from Austria).
The first goal of Portugal it was a valid one in my opinion, but the judge dont see that away, the first goal of the Swiss it was "out of game" (it was a invalid one) about the panalty against Portugal if its a case to mark a panalty against us, there is all so a panalty against the Swiss, with Nani...wich the judge one more time "didnt see" sad. (looks like he wants to show all the cards as possible to Portugal, witch he only stop when the Swiss start to win).
I dont mind my team lose with a superior team, or tactical superior but what i cant suport its the injustice and robery...

So Germany beats Austria by a cruise-missile hammer-goal by Ballack from freekick, and so the match had the expected dose of poison and aggression, like matches between Austria and Germany always have, and Germany made it into the next round. But I must really say that a convincing team looks different and plays better. I rate the chances for Portugal to kill germany as 66:33 if Germany does not manage to masisvely imporve and show some of the stregnth we have seen from it in the past two years. So far, they are playing below what they have shown in past two years to be capable of. and I can only wonder why that is so. Many mistakes, lacking precision, a weak defense, and lacking skill in positional play, not enough drive towards the opponent's goal. german team must improve in almost every aspect.
there is a chance that the Germans survive the match against Portugal, but the better chances are with their opponent.
The referee did a lousy job and allowed far too many yellow-card fouls by the Austrians going by without reacting, some of them were threatening the health of the tackled players. Worse referee performace I have seen so far. The decision to send the trainers out also is not a demosntration of comopetence. both trainers wanted to coach their teams from inside the coaching zone, ans that is perfectly allowed by the rules. why the fourth FIFA man saw a reason to intervene with that is beyond me. and both trainers did not understand it as well, inf act they showed that thy had no problem with each other when shaking hands before leaving the green. Really, the referees made highly questionable things this evening.

One of the austrians got off clean with a damned red card worthy offence, ubt oh well. At least Germanys game has improved to a nearly acceptable level, guess we will have to wait ant see now.
Going to keep this short because its 2am, am a bit tipsy because it was my brothers graduation party and need to be at work in 5 hours.

Are you sure?
We will see in the next match against Portugal.
Portugal has a fantastic team with a lot of experienced players, in defence, midfield and offence.
I won’t complain, if the German team loses that match. The German team will have to improve a lot to make it to the next round.
But still, I think the Dutch team has set the benchmark for this tournament with their stunning performances so far and it would be an honour and privilege to play against this outstanding team. To get a chance to play against the Dutch team, the German team will have to make it to the final.
That has to be the goal.

UEFA is now considering additional punishment for both coaches, so they must have said something really bad to the refs. Too bad we can only see what happens and not hear. I can easily imagine this starting when the fourth ref orders one or both of them to sit down for a while, and then things start to escalate. The rule is that one member from each team's support staff is allowed to give advice while briefly standing inside the technical area, but most of the time they should be sitting down. They are not allowed to stand there continuosly, something which many viewers don't seem to know.

Thanks, but that is highly questionable even with all key actors playing. But against Portugal: Frings has a broken rib, Podolski probably also will not play, the coach probably not allowed to sit on the bank. Portugal is very high favourite in the next match, and due to the terrible confusion and weakness in Germany'sdefense I could imagine that they the really slaughter germany, eventually. 2:0 was not enough for the plenty of 100% chances they had, although the Russians played well. I counted a two-digit number of top chances for them, 10 all in all, but scoring only two. With that goal efficiency, they will not survive Holland, and they will not have as many chances as the Swedes allowed them. the play was great, but if the Russians can repeat that performance level, also is a question. the team is young and still finds together, so I expect a more up-and-down way of going for their team's results. I expect them to be a strong contender in the next international major event, however. As people say: the future is theirs.

Meine Fresse, what was this? Was that the same German team that played one sub-mediocre, one bad and one of the worst German matches ever during the first round? They improved in every aspect where they needed to improve, and presented themselves in the form and strength that by their performances of the past two years I had hoped to see from the beginning. Portugal played well, and became very pressing in the second half, but it's strengths it had shown in the first round and the individual strengths of it's many great players had been successfully neutralised by a masterpiece of a German tactic, and great fighting spirit.
I did not expect this after the bad first round, but I think that the German victory today is well-deserved and a fair reflection of the game. Too bad for Scolari, by TV presence I like him, and he seem to have strong sense of fair play. Too bad for Portugal as well, but one cannot help it - only one team could win in a k.o.-match.
The match against Germany's next opponent will have some - spice :) , it is either the Croatians, with whom the Germans have an open bill after the first round, or Turkey - and plenty of Turks living in Germany (and having turned German streets into nightly festivals in past two weeks as if they already had won the championship. they are all crazy, you know :D ).
With a performance level like this, Germany is no sure winner of the final, but can mange to at least trip up Holland or Italy, eventually. These two are still my top favourites.
Allso christiano Ronaldo showed what a great **** he is by taking a dive, looking arround for a bit and the simulating like mad.
Yes I remember that scene, and he really is a great playactor. that is why although he may be a great football player I will never like him. Maradonna was the same way, and I always strongly disliked him - being a good player, but not quite as admirable as a man. the referees I would rate with a schoolnote of "four minus" - "not quite sufficient".
P.S. Anybody seen the scences after the match, and the "Verbrüderung" between players and fans? Greats scenes.

I dont think so... Found it difficult myself to judge whether that was a foul or just the usual rumble within limits that happens in 1-1 situations all the time. Match commentator in German TV mentioned it, but also did not make a great thing of it - and that man is known to comment quite fair and unbiased.
So, I am not sure what to think of it. Anyhow, there have also been questionable decisions against Germany: the ban of the coach, and during the world championship 2006 the totally questionable ban of Frings before the match against Italy (that was lost by germany then). Such decisions come with every tournament. Scolari too it quite calm - if he saw a major issue I suppose he would have protested with more fury - he saw it and made according gesture, but again, quite calmly.

I think the final will be Germany - Italy. The technically gifted Spanish midfield will prove too light against Italy with thier average height being 1.70. After all football is a physical sport and the Italians will take advantage of this. Too bad Pirlo is suspended.

Not wanting to defend it by principle reasons, but after having scanned British media, German media, Austrian and even French media, only some mention the incident, most do not, and those who mention it in no way talk of a significant violation of rules, and in fact for the most describe it as part of the usual routine you can see happening day in day out during standards and corner kicks, for example. I too had not the impression that Ballack was over the top. And since we do not know if the referee saw it or did not see it, I leave it to that. That people in Portugal look very close at it, is understandable, but all other seem to refuse to give it any further thought or comment.
Despite the pressing of the Portuguese team in the last 15 minutes or so, I also think that the German victory was deserved, if considering the whole match. ;) :)

My last comment about this topic its this: the final result was Germany 3 - Portugal 2 wich its no such a big diferent at all. Germany win the game but still no convence nobody even in Germany. This last years show the follow nunbers:
. Qualification for the World Championship of 1986
Estugard, 16 of October 1985
Germany 0 - 1 Portugal
. Qualification for the Wold Championship of 1998
Berlim, 06 of Setember of 1997
Germany 1 - 1 Portugal
. European Championship 2000
Roterdam, 20 of June of 2000
Germany 0 - 3 Portugal
. Qualification for the World Championship 2006
Frankfurt, 08 July of 2006
Germany 3 - 1 Portugal

RH, I can understand your disappointment, but even if it is a sting for you, the German team has convinced almost everybody over here, and internationally as well. This does not make it a winner for the finals automatically, for the Italians finally have found a thermal lift as well and the Dutch has been strong from the beginning. But if they can keep that level and maybe even put some more bits onto it, they are able to compete for the trophy now - just two days ago, we weren't, in no way.
As the BBC put it (and I must try to remember that before I hack away at the "typical tournament team" of Germany next time: "never ever count out the Germans". Maybe it is just economical that they often play so weak in the first round.
I just hope we do not meet the Italians in finals. Matches against Italy always are bitter fights and in the end the Italians have won. :-? Croatia would be fine - we have two open bills with them to settle.
Asanovic,
let's keep politics out of here, okay? I hate it when sports and politics get mixed, although i must admit that that is often the case (Olympics...). Okay, I hope the Turks will lose, but that is not because they are the Turks or muslims, but because I want the opportunity for the Germans to take revenge at your Croatian team. :)

Great match to watch as a neutral. My wife was going for Portugal while I was backing Germany. From a physical view it was like men against boys. How much id Portugal give away in height such that they looked like midgets almost. Regarding the Ballack header there is no doubt that he used both his hands to push the Portuguese defender forward even futher under the ball which allowed himself an uncontested and easy header into the back of the net. However I don't have much sympathy with the Portugal defender because it was poor positioning on his part and even without the hands push frm Ballack he would have found himself out bodied/muscled and under the ball. I loved the way Germany had five men across the midfield which just strangled through congestion and tackling the Portugal playmakers such as Ronaldo.
Germany are my favourites for the trophy. :yep:
Can't see how Turkey will win against Croatia given the number of injuries they have and the stupidity of their first choice keeper being out through suspension. What a dumbo he was that night against the tall Czech striker Jan Koller. So Croatia to win that one which will give Germany a good chance for revenge. ;)

To the Portuguese, don't deceive yourself by sulking about the referee and bad luck. Everyone who has experience with football knows that these things will always level out over a longer time.
I think the Portuguese are a class act (my heart almost stopped every time they got close to our penalty box), but the germans yesterday had one of those rare days when luck is on your side. Sure the Portuguese did not play convincingly, but which team would not get into trouble if you have to concede two goals out of the blue?
As a german I am very happy about this unexpected success, but I think we should'nt be too exhuberant. Because again, it was mostly the reputation of german football that carried us through again. I say this because I had the nagging feeling that the Portuguese had too much respect for the germans. Did they not watch our other games? Did they not know that the german defense is brittle and we literally sh_t our pants when we play against really talented players like the portuguese strikers?
In that respect, Croatia is the team that really impressed me. Because they have realized very well how germany can be defeated and they seem to actually enjoy playing against us. It will really be an interesting constellation if they should play against us in the semifinal too.
I say all this because yesterday I was really surprised by the turn of events, considering that I expected nothing I was rubbing my eyes when I saw how timid and methodical the Portuguese started into the match. The only explanation is that they were thinking too much, and were punished for it.
Anyway, even though they dropped out too early, the Portuguese made a fantastic impression in this tournament and can look forward to the next one.

I was most impressed by the Turkish keepers awareness immediately after the offside call was made in the last seconds of extra time. Without that there was no equaliser to take it to a penalty shootout. Priceless. Credit to Turkey. What a gutsy effort with the injuries and second choice keeper. They deserve all their success. Croatia were unlucky but they were terrible at the penalties probably because they were mentally shattered after the Turkish goal.

What to say?
Croatia had about 5+ chances, didn't score but in reality to me, and maybe because our team is still somewhat young, Turkish are a better, more prepared and braver team, that's why they had luck because they fought to the end. Nice for them.
Bilic made a mistake with petric, but that is now history.. The only thing Petric ever did right was the goal to the english and because he remembered a thing or two about suker, idiot.
At least, the Germans didn't get their chance for revenge, aah we would beat them still(we always play better with those overly proud big teams :rotfl:). Now they face a beaten up Turkey, but as I said Turkish are fighters, maybe they can do it..
And about the comments of being bored, if you play soccer or football, whatever, there is nothing more intense than 0:0 score with a fight to the teeth, but shure you have to have handball results to be fun? :rotfl:

Besides there is a nice joke about the relationship between Dutch and German football fans.
"Two Dutch and one German football fan are sitting in a plane to travel to the next world championship. The Dutch guys are sitting close to the window while the German is sitting next to the walkway (is that the English term for the little way through the plane?).
After the start the German takes off his shoes. After a couple of minutes one Dutch asks the German to let him through, so he could see a flight attendant to get a coke. The German says that he would go and get the coke for him. After he left the Dutch takes one of his shoes and spits into it. When the German returns the second Dutch asks him to get him a coke as well so he leaves again. Now the other Dutch takes the second shoe and spits into it too. After the landing the German puts his shoes on and realizes immediately what had happened. He turns to the Dutch and asks: How long to we have to keep this feud up. it's so silly that Dutch and Germans have to play tricks on each other all the time. Always this spitting into shoes and peeing into coke...."

You may rethink that:
What a great game between Russia and Sweden. Russia could have and maybe should have scored a couple more goals but they played so well. Russia vs Holland could be an interesting match.
If you did like me - no realizing the already given strength of the Russians, this may be the right time to correct that.
Impressive is that they are all playing in russia except one guy. Peterburgh did not win the championsleague by chance only. They keep their things together, one could say. It pays off to be financially independant and keep all talents together.
and haven't they become icehockey world champions again after so and so many long years?
Germany needs to face them in the next qualification. that could become a major headache.

I wrote these quotes before the match and now is certainly not the moment to pour oil in the fire. In fact what I said makes me look like an idiot now. I guess I have to make a statement.
You know what, yesterday the plebs were firing rockets around my house and today the bild zeitung is going to pour scorn about holland as they always do in such moments. This I find very embarassing and out of place, my apologies for that.
If I hadnt grown up with the images of 1988 and what came in the decade after it I might feel sorry for you because you really could have won the championship. Excuse me if I was such a s.o.b. but there is nothing football without some commitment to your team. And some of your fellow countrymen have made it pretty clear to me that they do not love us.
But - in this championship - I found nothing wrong with the dutch team absolutely nothing. That scene when Van Niestelroy did not fall in the first match was actually very impressive.
This time you only stumbled about a brand new lesson in international football, one that no one could have prepared for: playing with a B-team at the end of the group stage is not a good idea after all. Same trap that Portugal fell in.
In fact I cant remember if there was ever a championship that was won by a team who prematurely won their group and played with their second suit in the last match.
The young team from russia has to be loved for the way they won, it's rare to see a team that enjoys playing football so much.

Impossible to say what is going to happen now. The Russians could take the trophy, on the other hand they are much too inexperienced, so they might as well collapse completely against Italy. In any case this is an ideal development for the co - hosts of the next Euro, because they have now proven that their team could win the title in four years. I mean also age-wise this team is perfect. A good moment for Russians.

Be sure you don't miss Germany-Turkey. If the Germans keep up their niveau from the Portugal match, it will be a very close match, and with some emotional spice due to the high local rivalry: a lot of prestige is at stake. I see it as a 50:50, the match is totally open. I hope the Germans show to have an advantage in precision, fighting alone is not enough since the Turks have as much fighting spirit, they may also be slightly better in individual technical skills, so that must be countered by better tactic and team spirit. Tactical adaptation to the Turk's offensive temper and not wasting chances will be of the essence. Defense of Germany is not the most shining part of the team, so Germany needs to tackle any Turkish attack already in midfield to be sure, and will need to get and defend the initiative at all cost in order to even kill the chance for any Turkish avalanche. Maybe Podolski can blitz them. just countering Turkish attacks would be a high risk tactic, they are too dangerous for that.
If Spain meets Germany in finals, I have a good feeling that that challenge can be successfully solved for us. Against Russia - an open match again, maybe even with slight advantage for the russians. they are so damn fast and agile, they remind me of speeding mice.
From now on, everything - in good and bad - seems to be possible! I can't see any clear favourites.

Now, I don't have anyhing to watch on this euro..
I cannot believe Italians can endure Luca Toni, in the end they lost deserved. That Toni makes Italian like a ferrari with tires of tractor.
Aquillani ran 14 km.. Because of Toni, idiots..
Now..
Not a big fan of Russians, Turks are with 14- players. Spanish fall and fake all the time.. So it must be Germans.. Again..

After 20 minutes again I watched it with just one eye. Boring. a duel of two different playing philosophies, it seems.
Almost a Darwin Award for a German fan! He missed it closely, so: nice intention, but lousy execution:
A 17 year old fan driving on a motorbike managed to nestle the huge German flag he had with him around his neck while being in full flight on his motor bike. The other end of the flag then got into the rear wheel, the wheel was winding it up, and so the driver was suddenly catapulted to the rearside, did a salto in midair and then crashed onto the street behind the bike, suffering skull fractures and a brain trauma, none of them were sufficient to earn him a Darwin Award, since he is still alive, but one must give it to him that he was very close to succeeding.

I am driving to work through Berlin and the record number of german flags I saw attached on a single car has been four (so far). That certainly has an impact on fuel consumption. I also wonder what will happen if the first person is impaled by one of these.

Turkey team is desimated. This is the day there luck will run out. Yes they have spirit but so do the German. YOu can't forget that. The Germans never start good but as the tournament goes they grow and become very strong. There Defense can handle the Turks fine. The Turks have to watch out for the likes of Scweinsteiger and Ballack and Klose and Podolski in the box. It will be 1 way traffic with Turkey on the back foot.
As for Russia and Spain. Spain are a fatastic side but cant handle team that put pressure on them very well. Russia are an all out attack with many young players. I see this clashing with the Spains flair so i shant be touching this game.
The US embassy in Germany warns Americans that are staying in Germany right now to be careful:
"On Wednesday evening, June 25, Germany and Turkey will meet in the semifinal round of the 2008 European Football Championship in Basel, Switzerland. Various cities in Germany have set up viewing areas for the public to watch the live broadcast of this game. The "Fan Mile" in front of the Brandenberg Gate in Berlin is expected to draw up to 500,000 German and Turkish fans, Frankfurt am Main will host a public viewing area at the Rossmarkt, and Munich is setting up a large public viewing area at the Olympic Stadium where 30,000 fans are anticipated. Similar events are planned in other cities and spontaneous celebrations or demonstrations related to the match may occur throughout Germany.
Because of the high fan interest in this prestigious semi-final elimination game between Germany and Turkey, there exists the possibility that disturbances, including violent disturbances may occur before, during or after the match, which begins at 20:45. At a minimum, post-game celebrations will likely result in traffic congestion in larger cities. Crowds celebrating previous German and/or Turkish victories have blocked streets and rocked vehicles attempting to pass through them."
We remind American citizens in Germany that even mass gatherings and demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times".

This is mostly tactics by the turks and their clever trainer. They want the germans to underestimate them ..
And as to the talk about the bloody aftermath. Some hours ago I was driving through the heart of it all, Berlin Kreuzberg (a.k.a as "Little Istanbul") and I saw a lot of happy people, many of them sporting turkish and german flags at the same time. I actually think this match is going to be a more of big party of both sides, a display of the fact that after all germans and turks get along pretty well. Tranmission problems were a global phenomenon, due to an electricity breakdown in the very centre, Vienna TV headquarters. German TV than fed in swiss TV transmission directly - Swiss TV is the only one being connected directly into the stadium.
Okay Germany won, but it was the open, very close match that I predicted - just worse. Turkey copied Croatian tactics - and the germans demonstrated in first half that they had nothing learned form the match against Croatia, again stumbling around helplessly and without orientation. That improved only so far, and not more. Spain and Russia will have watched the game, and will have noticed that, too. Expect to see more of that in final. The foul in 51. minute was technically a clear, medium-level foul and right on the line, as to be seen in slo-mo, rules say the line is part of penalty zone and thus the germans were rejected a justified penalty. but I am not thinking that a goal from that would have changed the match that much. I also think that if it were the russians today, Germany would have lost: the Russians are even more agile and faster and technically skilled than the Turks.
So, yes, it is the final, but the play of a sovereign aspirant for the title looks different. I think a turkish victory would have been deserved, too, but as it is now the Germans obviously had a little bit more luck. With luck again that is enough against Spain (with luck, remember). Against Russia it will not be enough.
For the time being, congratulations and "enjoy!" to the german team nevertheless.
P.S. when I was five years old, we were on holiday in Bavaria, halfway between Salzburg and Bad Reichenhall. the world championship was running (later won by the germans), and the Tv transmission also failed during a match of the Germans. One farm away, a farmer ran right into the barn and there shot himself with a hunting rifle in despair. Thats what I call solid fanship!

Germany's successes (by far the most successful team at european championships, one of the two or three most successful teams at world championships, no other team has reached finals and semifinals so often) may come right from the mediocrity of german national teams:
http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,562068,00.html
What they say about the curse of having leagues with many international stars and national teams made of "mercenaries" I think myself, too. German national teams are not a speeding Porsche, but a reliable middle-of-the-road Audi, as the author puts it.

One would think they would have been prepared for power outages and have, say, a backup generator that would fire up when needed. From what I know it's quite common to have that type of system even for normal TV-broadcasts. Btw, the Swiss tv and Al Jazeera were able to broadcast the match pretty much without a problem.
But anyway, Spain - Russia today. Many probably see Spain as the favourite but Russia pretty much with a full squad is no push-over. Arshavin is quickly becoming maybe the man of the tournament.

I sure dont have to tell you that germans organize and prepare better than anyone because they are extremely self-critical and afraid of f_uck ups. They don't always succeed but the principle remains. If a german team plays you can bet that it's better prepared than their opponent.
I share your assessment of the turks though. They were extremely strong mentally - wanting the win even more than the germans, and in the first half they showed their match of matches. The Turks played for their honour, and sure won the match in that respect. It was a brilliant match from a handicapped, weaker team, and they just barely missed the sensation.
Still, the german team got through because in the second half they as well recovered their will - this being one of the strengths that decides so many important matches for germany.
If one accepts that football is not played by robots, one has to be pretty satisfied by the fighting spirit of both teams. I don't get this constant nit picking if the public expectation is not 100% fulfilled.

That is the typical German weakness: to assume that it is like this. We have seen several team who were better organized, had better positional play, and to assume the Germans are the only one preparing well is simply ridiculous, if not haughty. Other teams are professional too, you know. And this time again the german team came so far only becasue luck worked overtime. Poland match was mediocre. Croatia was a catastrophe. Austria was a mess. Portugal could have been easily lost going into overtime or penalty kicking, and it would have been okay a result since they had their chances, too, and Ballack's goal is debated. the Turks yesterday were the better team and would have deserved the win more than Germany: only the stunning efficiency: three attempts, three goals, turned it for the germans (turkey: 7-8 major shots on goal, two scores). So tell me the Germans are more professional and better organised. sometimes they cna play like that, yes: but they lack consistency - and that would be a true sign of professionalism as well. Even the coach today admitted that, he said that his team seriously lacks consistency.
Coratia showed clever positional play. Spain even more. the Russian are mentally extremely strong. The Turks as well. Germany is not unique in what you try to point out. By far it is not.
Seing how our opponents very often outplayed us, we had "Riesendusel" until now. A little luck always plays a role in a tournament. but we are heavily depending on it during this tournament, and that I do not like. Winning the trophy should not depend so much on luck, but on strength, and the strength this team is capable of we have seen only once so far.

You can have luck once or twice, like Greece last time or Denmark in 1992 but not on such a regular basis. Even the british, our old critics, have changed their attitude to german football. Russia lacked their amazing work rate from the Netherland game and they looked tired today. When you don`t have the fitness to pressure a technical passing team like Spain you haven`t got a chance.
Germany need to close down the Spanish midfield in the final or they will be outplayed.
The German`s chances will come from set pieces, Spain doesn`t have many players taller than 1.80.

For some reason the Russians seem to play badly against the Spanish, or Spanish very well against the Russians. IMO there are some pairs of nations like this, where often the other side has a mysterious advantage. Although not saying that Spanish won for some other reason then being really really good because they are just that. Germans will have a tough time with them. Interesting final, no doubt.

Spain was the opponent I hoped for. Don't know if germany automatically will win now, but I think the way the Russians play would have meant greater problems for the Germans. If the Germans after the mediocre Turkey match can find back to the way they handled the Portugal match, I would say chances are 50:50, but if not, the Spanish will be favourites 66:33. I hope that the better team will win and that luck plays no significant role this time - for any of the teams. Let it be a clear sports decision, hopefully. i also hope we see no disputed goals, and no penalties refused by the referee. and for the sake of the sport I finally hope we see a decision in regular or overtime - no penalty kicking in the end.
Yes, let us hope we see a good match and the best one wins
As luck sometimes wants it, for me the last two matches of Spain in this Euro have been somehow of mixed feelings: The two nations and cultures I like most are german and russian, I know and love their history, language, music and literature and I have a big affinity with both. So I wish Spain to win, but feel sorry for the opponent if he loses :88)
Anyway, since I live next to the german school in my home town (Where I studied), if Spain loses I might walk down there, have a beer and join the party equally  at least a good part of my old classmates will be there celebrating it.

I would accept if Spain wins tomorrow, they are overdue to win a major title. The Spanish are ok, I spent some time there. Of course they have a lot of mistakes, but I like how they know each and every one, and have no problem admitting them.
Their greatest weakness, and also the biggest hope for Germany tomorrow: they tend to be lazy. This also one reason they underachieved in inter-national football. Together with internal discordance, not feeling like one nation, rather five different ones!
But good luck for the match, cabrónes. Experience tells me this is should be a pretty open one.

Congrats to Spain, their team deserved the win, and the German team deserved the loss, I'm sorry to say.
The Germans fell once again victim to their weakness that has become obvious in the past three weeks: a lack of constancy in mental focussing and concentration, leading to a loss of precision and accuracy, as well as stagnating creative agility, before being rolled over by the Spanish. the result could have been much clearer this evening. The first ten minutes were the Germans in command, but then they lost focus and brought the spanish into the match. In second half, again there was a phase after Jansen and kuranyi came in, when the germans for some minutes took over command - and again lost focus then, this time the Spanish already being warm and in the game. Just two obvious goal chances is too little for a wannabe-champion. the spanish had - i stopped counting somewhere, it were many chances for them. they unite individual skill and elegance with overall agility and constant team coreography. Watching that in action is impressive. Well done, Espana!
The Spanish make a just and deserved champion. Many see them as the obviously best team of this tournament. I missed almosta ll matches by them, so I can't judge that, but at last I can imagine that that assessement probably is true.
The Germans acchieved more than one could argue has been theirs. After the loss against Croatia and the cramped mediocre match against Austria that they won with quite some luck, it could have been already over for them after first round - it was no pleasure to see them play. Then the obvious highlight, against Portugal, and fighting spirit at its best, but even here: Portugal had more chances and the fight was close, Germany's opponent was not decisively dominated. The Turkey match saw the better team loosing by bad luck. Seen that way I have several teams on the list (Holland, Portugal, Turkey), that would have deserved to play Spain in finals at least as much as Germany - if not more. Holland and Portugal finished below their real value.
The German team has great potential, but again: constancy is what is missing in turning this potential into realities with regularity. This is their greatest archilles heel that to repair they must focus on in the future.
the French debacle maybe coould have been expected, due to their failure to change their over-aged team whilöe there still was time. The Italians were the greatest dissapointment for me. Russia was the greatest surprise of the tournament - I think the future is theirs. the referees - some did well, but some matches I saw featured sub-standard referee performances. My impression was that too much was overseen.

Kudos to the Spanish team they deserve their victory! And I hope for good results of our team on the World Championship - they have all the chances.
Best Regards!
The irony of the match is interesting:
Spain won because it did not play as the classic Spain: They made good soccer, they sacrificed themselves when the need arose, and they made the goal when the opportunity came.
Germany lost because they did not play as the classic Germany: Lack of concentration, lazyness in running after the ball, and what amzes me even more -lack of spirit- :o Germany has been well known and respected for fighting his matches till the last minute, running after each ball as it had just started and having a huge menthal strength against demoralization when the score was against them. Yet they didn't do that yesterday, in the last minutes they looked really defeated, something I had never ever seen before in a german team :damn:

I agree Germany was lame, it looked like they were dead tired. Besides it was the same with Russia in the semi final, so it might have to do with Spain. There are things about a match you do not see so easily. Germany started pretty well but after 15 minutes they gave up. Maybe they realized there was no weakness in their opponent, Spain being just too damn solid.
Anyway there's no doubt the right team won. For Spain this is a great day, in the future they will be taken much more seriously, and have left the underachiever label behind.
I'm happy for Spain the best tournament team they didn't stole their 2nd trophy http://www.emoticonland.net/smileys/Expressions/expresss001.gif (http://www.emoticonland.net) , Germany doesn't have to blush third world cup , second here it's nice
