:p Hi everyone!

Here's a simpel instructions how to do your own choice regarding more renown.
just follow this simpel step:lol: :

You have to be in base after your mission for this to work.

NOTE : This procedure involves editing a gamefile , create a backup copy of the file before proceeding.

* enter the "\sh3\data\cfg\carreers\" folder.

* select the name of the folder that is the same as the carreer that you are using.

* use a texteditor to edit the file "Patrols_0 cfg"

* scroll down to your last mission details and change the amount of "DeltaRenown"

Her's a example : DeltaRenown=698.750000
DeltaRenown=200000.750000

*save the file and start the game and you can by so much that you want when it comes to upgrade your sub:lol:

Those of us who have been around for awhile have known about that for a long time. The question for me is why would anyone want to do that? I never spend any renown on anything.:sunny:

That would be cool! But that would mean that it's like bribing BdU and OKM of giving you everything what you desired!:nope:

It's cooler if you earned the upgrades. It's more gratifying!:arrgh!:

Its not a big problem to use cheats in the game, in the beginning when i start to play i use it myself, but later i came to a point and conclued it wasnt any fun at all.
I think this it will happened to you some day...but the most importante its gain experience in the game and learn with you own mistakes and EXPERIENCES and tests, as for exemple: i conclued the best type of U-boat in the war (to reach the end of the war) its the type VII B, its fast, small, and dive in seconds) for another words you can use the infinite renow to test what the equipment its crucial to use and those wich its not necessary with out sufer any consequences in you career.
When you star a new career for real (with out using cheats) you will know all ready the U-boat you must choose and all the equipment you must upgrate...you only will put the things you need, and you wont wast any renow at all.
Thats what i think! :know:

And right you are to mention it. I often find people 'discovering' things or places for the first time, and I always think "SO? I knew about that ages ago!", forgetting that every post gets lost down the list with time. This is especially true of the Online Fleet Submarine Manual http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/ ; every couple of months somebody posts a link with "Look what I found! Aren't you glad I found this for you?"

Discovering things here is like discovering sex - every generation thinks they invented it themselves, not realizing that the previous generation has known about it since THEY discovered it; and the older generation thinks "What a bunch of morons - doesn't everybody know that?"

You just keep right on finding out things, and I'll keep joking about it...and I'll be wrong again.:sunny:

SH3 is a single player game. "cheating" is a nebulous term at best in such games.

As a method to experiment with "what if" scenarios, I don't see anything wrong with modifying the files.

It is only if you are in competition with others could this "unfair" advantage be considered "cheating"

Is it cheating if you set your realism to 10%? No, it is just playing the game at a different level. Same with modifying the files. Not cheating, just playing the game at a different level.

Now, saying that, I also have to say that if you do modify the files, you can't compare your career with someone who has not modified the files. This is the same as someone who plays stock SH3 and one who plays SH3 with all the cooleo mods - really can't compare careers unless each player is playing the game at the same level.

I can't understand why they are "yelling" at you, because I'm sure there are still people around who didn't know this, including me. So I thank you for the information.

The reason is that I think the renown system in SH3 stinks, it has nothing to do with reality. Uboat commanders didn't have to pay for upgrades  I remember the good old Aces of the Deep, you were offered a bigger boat based on good results, which IS realistic. You were offered new improved equipment when available, only resulting in more time in port to install it. Also very realistic.

Anyway, I just want to get rid of it. And since I probably can't do that the other solution would be to put in a million renown, and I can upgrade and change boats when I want to do so :)

AOD also had 'points'. They never explained what they were there for, but you could see them after every patrol.

Either that or play the NYGM Tonnage War supermod. It does exactly what you want - no renown, automatic upgrades, the whole works.

But.. that's... CHEATING !!!
:o

Depending...

When we start a career in 1943 I don't understand why we have only 1500 renown.
We can't buy anything and we are forced to fight with a weak material against a very strong enemy...

Because you are a brand new captain. Nobody knows you. You haven't proven yourself. When you start later in the war you get some of the good stuff that had to be earned a year or two earlier.

Of course, but a new captain begining in 1943 have not an U-Boot and material of 1939 !
He have the equipment and torpedos of 1943.

I thought the ultimate way to get unlimited renown was to enter Kptlt. Balz as your name. It's so effective that when you come home from work there is a band playing on your porch and you get medals.

Your issued with the standard equipment you would reasonably expect a boat at that time to be fitted with upon launching.

The more advanced/up to date kit has to be purchased with renown.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Not during wartime anyway

What I have done is to edit the config files to change the renown required for equipment upgrade (but not crew upgrade) to zero. That way I can get the new equipment when needed. As pointed out earlier, some of the equipment is worthless and some priceless.
I use SH3CMDR to upgrade my crew as I see fit. I sometimes will upgrade their "experience" in the crew config file also.
I then use the renown gained to mark the progress in my career.
Next I go out and usually get sunk. :damn:

Hmmm.... Renown? :hmm:

I interpret this as the influence I gain as I sink more Allied ships. :arrgh!:

The more renown, I interpret that as more influence I exert on BdU, the Kreigsmarine and der Fuhrer. :|\\ :sunny:

The less renown, I interpret that, especially in late-war/late-career as having used up all your favors and contacts in getting the best crew and equipment for your u-boat. :o  :dead:

What?? How?? I didn't know you could do that! OMG! :o

Wait a minute... oh yes, I remember the first day I bought SH3 and looked at game FAQ's for hints and tricks. In fact this is ..I think.. the number one answer on almost all those cheat websites.

I think as a beginner Kaluen it helped to add a lil' extra renown here and there. But as the seasons wear on and more salt is applied, it seems to pile up all on its own. Without out any assistance from file tampering. :hmm:

Hey that doesn't mean that your post wasn't informative to someone. But be prepared to take a little ribbing every now and then.

Well it was informative to at least one, so his post is as good as any other in here. That said, people have to accept those comments too. After all the game is 3-4 years old...and it doesn't like Vista :damn:

Cheat websites? Never heard of them ;) I really don't want to cheat. But when I started a new career in the canoe I skipped the naval academy, and only got 500 renown. You don't exactly get rich in GWX from the start, and I didn't want to jump around in a type II for two years before I could afford a VIIB, would have to start a new career.

Either that or play the NYGM Tonnage War supermod. It does exactly what you want - no renown, automatic upgrades, the whole works.

Okay thanks, but very easy to change the numbers in that file, problem solved.

I run it on a Vista machine (32-bit) with few, if any, problems. The only times that I've had CTDs where when I accidently did one of the known SH 3 no-nos; saved while submerged, etc. or installed conflicting mods or installed a mod which had an error it.

I think that the premise of having to buy equipment upgrades is kind of flawed. It seems to me that boats would be retrofiited with the latest equipment when it became available. If I was to "redo" the game, you would only need renown to purchase a "better" boat, like in real life: successful commanders were often rewarded by being given command of larger boats.

As far as cheating goes I find that you only end up cheating yourself as you rob yourself of the sense that you've really accomplished something when you sink a really nice target. Sinking the Hood, etc. doesn't mean as much if you've played around with the settings to give yourself an advantage.
