i'm still quite new to SH4, but I've done around seven missions in the campaign and on the last mission, i found and sunk a huge jap carrier and two huge jap destroyers.
I was getting a little bit board with the missions i was given, as they always seem to be the same, like deploy to Honshu and engage enemy merchant shipping, but looking for something like a jap carrier kept me going. The problem is, now i've found and sunk one, i want a bit more exitement. After my last mission to Honshu, i've been given the same mission yet again.
Is there any way of getting involved in any big battles, or does anyone have any tips on places where i might find some more action? It would be nice to be able to sit back and watch a good fight, but I've not seen one friendly more than a few miles out from a friendly dock yet. Maybe all this will come later in the campaign, if so, no problem, i can wait, just as long as i know i'm not going to be given the same old patrols over and over again.
I don't have any mods. Its not something i've tried yet with fear of them causing crashes.
I would like to be able to have full access to all the subs though if possible.
I'm building a 1/72 scale model of a Gato Sub, so it would be nice if i could take command of one in SH4.
Is it possible to get access to all the subs without starting a new career and if so, can anyone tell me how to do it, or what mods i need. I just have the standard game at the moment patched with 1.4
One more question: I sunk two sen toku subs, but i was not given any credit for them. Why is that?
Thanks,
Keith.

Hey Keith,
Welcome to SH4!
I can't answer all your questions but regarding the repeat missions, it's a known problem with the default game. You can often get the same mission and patrol area a bunch of times in a row.
I strongly recommend you at least run the mod called Run Silent, Run Deep, (RSRD for short). It's easy to install and has been around forever. Most people around here are running it and problems are rare. Definitely worth it.
It includes a completely reworked campaign engine, with much better missions. It also includes most if not all of those big historical battles you're looking for. If you are at the right place at the right time, you will see them. It also has historical convoys and shipping lanes.
You shouldn't get the same mission twice in a row with that mod running.
I'm sure others will be able to answer your other questions.
Take care,

Thanks for your help.
Ok, i'm going to install the RSRD mod, as that sounds good.
Can someone please post a link or links to what i need to install this mod on my 1.4 version. I,ve looked throuh the mods and versions, but I'm still not 100% sure which one i need. I would also like to be able to have accessto all the subs.
Thanks,
Keith.

I,ve downloaded jsgme, then i downloaded what i THINK is the correct RSRD mod for my version of sh4, but its a rar file and i don't know how to usewinrar.
I extracted the rsrd mod with winrar to a folder, but that folder is only 4kb, so that doesnt sound right.
Are there any instructions anywhere that can tell me how to install this mod (if i have the correct version)? I,ve never done this before, so obviously i don't know how to do it.
Thanks,
Keith.

Keith...You need to extract it the "MODS" folder in your main SH4 game folder.Click on the little wheel for JSMGE installer and you will see the mod listed on the left side..At the top there is a button with this sign on it >. Click on this button and it will move the mod to the Right side.Violia it is installed in your game...Good hunting....

Keith_UK:
With SH4 v1.4 you should have downloaded this: http://files.filefront.com/RSRDC+V350+for+V147z/;10213509;/fileinfo.html
this
http://files.filefront.com/RSRDC+V350+Patch1rar/;10213512;/fileinfo.html
and this
http://files.filefront.com/RSRDC+SH4V14+CTDFIXrar/;10424996;/fileinfo.html
But be aware it's no longer supported or being developed for v1.4, only for v1.5.
I'm sure you can find more help in the RSRD thread here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=123467
Mainexpress:
You should grab the U-boat addon (1.5) if you can since most mods are starting to require it. Without it you may be stuck running older versions of the most popular mods. There is no harm in having it installed if you don't use it, as far as I know it doesn't touch the U.S. careers at all.
As for the most popular mods, they are all stickied to the top of the Mods Workshop forum here : http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=219
Most people run a combination of:
-ROW Pacific Environment (graphics improvements, better seas, skies, clouds, etc)
-Run Silent Run Deep (completely reworked campaign, missions, etc)
and either "Trigger Maru Overhauled" or "Real Fleet Boat" for everything else, depending of which of them you like best.
After installing these, SH4 is like a brand new game, light years beyond default.

Install them one at time, play the game, see if everything is ok is my advice. I am playing with the RFB mod [Real Fleet Boat] mod 1.5 mod. and I am in LOVE with it!
The damn thing is GREAT!

I,ve just bought the U-Boat mission pack, so i now have v1.5.
I have installed ROW 3.3, then RSRDC and then Enviromental 4.4.
I then noticed the mods option folder and was wondering if it would be ok to activate the sun flair option from ROW 3.3, now i have 4.4 installed?
Also, is there any way i can stop the enemy planes from seeing me when i am below the surface? I would like to set the enemy planes "sight" back to how it was in the stock game if possible.
The new graphics look fantastic BTW and i love the way you can walk about on deck.
I did like the darker under water effect from ROW 3.3 better than the lighter effect with 4.4 though. Is there any way to change that back or would the whole sea be darker again?
Thanks,
Keith.
