... entitled "the thirty fathom grave"

November 1963: A U.S. Navy Destroyer in the south pacific is moving along its course nice and slow, and makes sonar contact with a submerged object. There are no propeller beats... only the occasional tapping of what sounds like a hammer against a hull.

The destroyer comes to a stop above the object and sends a diver down to determine the source of the sound. He finds a submarine, partially burried in the sand heavily scarred with battle damage. The eery pounding on the hull seems to be coming from within the sub amidships beneath the conning tower. The diver pounds three times on the hull and is answered with three responding knocks from within the sub.

Even though no identifying marks are obvious either due to severe damage or to the sub being partially embedded into the sand... The Destroyer captain makes an urgent call for assitance to aid in the rescue of survivors. Shortly therafter one of the destroyers crewmen (a rather bernardish fellow) falls ill, and is admitted to sick bay where he revisits memories of being the sole survivor of a sunken submarine which was attacked in a battle eerily close to their location, but that was twenty years earlier.

I wont spoil it...

but i leave you with two questions

1. Is the sub a recently damaged Sub of unknown nationality, with men aboard who are desparate for rescue?

OR

2. Is the sub filled with restless spirits who cannot slumber in eternal peace until their crew is complete, and they are calling the bernard like sailor to his rightful resting place with them?

i will tell you this... the sub is eventually identified before the end of the show, and its I.D. baffles all imagination.. and one of the two questions i have posed to you is the answer to the story.

--------------

There is a fifth dimension.

Beyond that which is known to man.

It is a dimension as vast as space... and as timeless as infinity.

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge.

This is the dimension of imagination.

It is an area which we call................. "The Twilight Zone".

I had to rush and hunt for that ghose ship in SH3 after watching this episode. :rotfl:
