Its October 1942, and I now have the option to install a Radar Warning antennae onto my boat. Should I do this? And does this antennae also provide enemy destroyers with a means of detecting your boat?

Everybody has a different opinion on this.
I find it more immersive to have a watch crew warn me,
I also play GWX 2.1 AT 100% realism.
I like it as real as it can get.:D

Nah its totally useless. I have put and upgraded several radar and radar warning. It doesnt help alot. However if you can get sonar and doing submerged cruise it would be better!
This is only an opinion also dont do what i think:nope: :nope:

Well, I haven't installed it yet, but if people's general opinion is that its a useless piece of kit, i probably wont bother installing it then.

The radar warning receiver is one of the most useful pieces of equipment - it's saved me a number of times (especially from aircraft) as it picks up enemy radar ages before they can detect me.
Radar, however, has never been useful - it's like an aircraft magnet!

well mate wreford seems to like it...but others dont...matter of opinion really!!!
i hated it as i was kicked out of tc constantly with it even though the ships i was picking up never knew i was there:down:
remember to save game before installing it as i dont think you can un-install the radar....and are left with it.
dont bother is my say......for what thats worth:up:

Agreed, it has saved my butt numerous times. On the other hand, I wouldn't bother with radar.
I agree with KptLt Lindemann and Wreford-Brown. The radar warning receiver will warn you of active radar in the area long before you can spot the ship or plane using it. It gives you the time to make a decision on what you want to do and act on it.

But, I suppose radar CAN have its advantages. See, I would use radar sparingly. Only turn it on every now and then for an hour or so, then kill it if nothing is found. Dive, stay down for a few days, surface, and do some more sweeps :)

Even though I'm a noob I have found radar warning a life saver. I always get the upgrades when available.
Also, radar is so disappointing as a search tool. In the early part I rely on my watch to find targets. By 42 I rely heavily on the hydrophones as my primary search tool till the end of the war.
personally, i love radar warning (Oberleutnant Freiherr Beckman owes his life to that bit of kit)
Radar is another matter, I do like to spend the 250 renown though, its quite useful for getting some decent solutions in a rainstorm against single targets but hydrophone can do that too
and if you want a truly interesting and hair-raising battle... go inside a convoy in a rainstorm and use the radar on the surface to get the data for the solutions, fire the torpedoes and prepare for a horde of escorts coming down on you

Always get the radar warning receivers when they become available. They don't give away your position, and they give you good enough warning that you can survive.
Or, you could just not get them and be sunk by a Liberator that comes screaming out of the overcast, giving you no time to crash dive.
Your call.
I have used the u-boat radar only once, when shadowing a convoy on the surface in really bad weather. I think that u-boat radars are useless.
RWR works much better, and helps you detect targets. When you meet a lot of radar beams in the ocean, you can be pretty sure it's a convoy. RWR can "spot" enemies at much longer ranges than your watch crew.
So, I allways buy the newest RWR, but radar only if I have much renown.

Radar is very clunky to use in this game. It very hard to stop it on a contact in time (because unlike the sonar wheel you can't go back in the opposite direction), making it ergonomically useless. The range is typically very short, much shorter than the RWR and sonar. And it gives away your position. I'd love to see a PPI mod, but other than what kaarlo said about bad weather I never use it.
I belong to the camp that find radar warning useful. When receiving a warning, order parascope depth and see if you get any sonar contact. If you hear anything, means you are near a ship. If not, a plane is coming. I will be spending the next hour under water.
Radar, on the other hand, is only useful if you want to die fighting off hordes of Airplanes.

I find the radar warner an absolute must have. Always get the newest one, and heed itīs warnings!!
The Spring and Summer of -42, when the allies start using Radar and before you can get the warner is close to the most frustrating time of the War. Enemy ships and planes comes at you "out of nowhere" in any weather, day or night.
The Radar I use sparingly... but on the other hand, not all enemy planes have radar. If you do not use your radar, you will not have any early warning against them.

You could do a lot worse than take note of #5 by Wreford-Brown http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

The whatever it's name "cross" radar warning receiver is very handy in that it buys you precious seconds of time to get below the surface before the allied air arrive to drop death from the sky.

Agreed on radar-warning being usefull, keep up with th upgrades.
FumO 29 however - kind of junk. And makes the front of your conning tower look like it's wearing a diaper.
