View Full Version : Why do...?

Why do the escorts, an RN armed trawler and a destroyer, in the convoy attack training suddenly begin to slug it out, the destroyer going under as the result of this very uneven duel?

Why does the Clemmson destroyer convoy escort in the first individual mission suddenly go under as though hit by a torpedo?

That's what's just happened to me as I was dogging the convoy after having emptied all my forward tubes.

Never fired a shot at the at the four-stacker, yet down she went.

I have seen DDs sunk by there own depth charges, and sunk by there own planes too.
Are you saying they turned on each other??

I've seen it happen numerous times playing the convoy Naval Academy mission in GWX 1.04. (not yet in 2.1) It's really absurd when an armed trawler is picking on a destroyer both supposed to protect the same convoy against me. It's as if they needed an alternative to vent their anger when I'm trying not to be there to recieve it.

That's what I am saying.

In the final training task (convoy attack) the destroyer escort and armed trawler escort always enter a Schlagfest and the trawler always wins. They've been doing this since I first started playing SH3 vanilla and they still do it in GWX 2.1.

Yesterday, however, I witnessed the USN Clemmson DD sinking during the first individual mission that reconstructs Operation Paukenschlag off the US easterrn seaboard.

I'd fired off my for'ard tubes at two tankers in the convoy than had gone into silent running, periscope down at 20 metres in the very shallow waters, pursuing the convoy at a distance whilst waiting for my tubes to be reloaded and night to fall. Before sunset I rose to periscope depth to take peek at the convoy: the DD was going down fast and nearby was the other escort, an armed tug, which is the scenario that I have long since become used to in the final training mission.

Although I have no report of lesser vessels sinking a destroyer I can tell you that I have seen DD's mistakenly sinking their bretheren in the campaign. This is both stock and GWX 2.0.
My only guess is the limitations of AI in targeting. And yes, DDs will blow themselves up if they make an attack run that causes them to reverse due to another vessel in their path.
These are very rare occurences in my experience, cheers to ubisoft and the Grey wolves for excellent games/mods IMO.

I just explained this on another thread. Can't find it right now, so I don't blame you for not knowing.

Anyway, you know the part where if you sink a neutral ship or a friendly ship you become an enemy for 24 hours? That's to keep you from doing that. The way it's written, though, it happens to them as well. If a British DD misses you and accidentally hits another escort, or even a merchant, they instantly declare war on him.

Silly, but there it is.

Exactly.

This behavior is a stock SH3 bug unrelated to GWX. It has been there forever, and that element of the code is hard-coded.

Thankfully, it doesn't happen often.

I was wondering if the sudden hostile action between two escorts was linked to the programming of the vanilla game, and now, from what I have read above, that seems to be the case: as I wrote earlier, I first noticed this happening in the training school when I played vanilla SH3 long before GWX appeared on the scene. That's how this sudden outbreak of internicine warfare must come about: the trawler usually spots my scope and starts ripping off small calibre fire at it, prangs the DD and war is declared between the escorts. This has happened so often in my experience, that I've wondered whether the trawler is manned by drafted Highlander Jocks who have found the whisky store and, in their cups, have suddenly mutated into 20th century Jacobites.

The speedy reaction to that which is judged as enemy action by GWX first became apparent to me when outward bound for the first time from Königsberg on August 1st 1939: I had been having some problems with my mods and, as I was leaving my dock, I noticed that my water stream was not functioning. I decided to quit the game in order to fix the mod, but before doing so, and out of sheer mischief, I slotted a torpedo into my escort's stern. Down went my dutiful escort, but at the moment of torpedo impact the whole city suddenly lit up as I got hammered left, right and centre by shore based and seaborne artillery, which barrage resulted in my going down in record time.

Haha that would be something

'This sub is mine!'
'No, I saw it first!'
'Well bring it on!'
