My Ref book has the range of this fish at 7.5km, an improvement over the T11.
Now I know the guys that do GWX have done thorough research for their excellent masterpiece and they have it at 5km.
which is right, are they both right? confused.

If I recall correctly the range of the TIII was about 7,500m when the batteries were warmed, but when cold the range was closer to 5,000m.

How were they warmed up? I guess we can't simulate this though, either one or the other.
This is from uboat.net:
"Full effectiveness was obtained when the T2 was preheated electrically to 30 degrees Cent (86 F) before firing. Not preheated figures are 28 knots for 3000m."
It would be nice if we could simulate this but I wouldn't know where to begin such a mod.

This is nerdy and kinda OT, but I happened to be wondering lately: why do batteries last longer warm than cold? Is it just that reaction happens optimally at a warm temperature compared to cold? I've noticed with my dying iPOD mini that it lasts about twice as long if I hold it in my hand (warming it to body temp) than if i just let it sit in my pocket. Furthermore, when it sits in my pocket, when I retrieve it after a while, it is unusually cold - colder than air temp, as if the opposite had happened - that in holding it's charge, the battery had absorbed energy from the iPOD body. I could be way off track/superstitious with all this though. Anyone know the physics/chemistry of it?
Batteries work better warm because they produce electricity through a chemical
reaction and most chemical reactions work faster and more efficiently at higher
temperatures.
The batteries on the torps where heated by electrical heat pads. It took some time to
heat the torps. Most (all(?)) VIIC ships did not have the heating apparatus at the rear
torpedo tubes.
To stay realistic you may want to avoid loading electric torps in the rear tubes.
